Chapter 47
Emily's POV
"Emily, Toby came to see me yesterday. He has understood his mistake and apologized to me. He is your father after all, about his punishment, can you ask Andre to stop? If he becomes a bum, this will have consequences for your reputation as well."
I went to see Hellen in the hospital this morning, and her words made me wonder how to respond. Hellen was always so kind that she could choose to forgive even Toby, who had hurt her.
I didn't say yes to Hellen right away, and when I got back to the office at noon, I went to the penthouse office to have lunch with Andre. I asked about Toby's situation, and Andre told me that Toby now only had a villa left for him to live in.
I listened carefully to Andre's words, but I couldn't tell you what emotions I was feeling; what happened to Toby was bad enough, but it didn't compare to what happened to me and Hellen.
At least he had a house left to live in, whereas Hellen and I had to rent a house to survive as children. I didn't feel happy about what happened to Toby, but I didn't feel sympathy for him either, because those were the prices he had to pay when he made a mistake.
But then I remembered Hellen's words, Toby now has nothing, if I let him become a vagrant I worry that he will kidnap Hellen again for money.
Hellen is not much defensive about Toby, or she would not have let Toby have the opportunity to apologize to her.
"Andre, that's the end of the punishment. I think Toby should already know his mistake and won't do such a dangerous thing again."
I finally decided to let Andre stop the punishment of Toby, and I think I should not even have any more dealings with Toby's family in the future.
"Emily, for the sake of the father we have noticed, lend me some money, I really can't live anymore."
I was surprised by Emma's call. Although Toby was bankrupt, the company was bought for enough money for the three of them to live well in M State.
Emma's voice, however, sounded weak, which puzzled me.
"No, Emma, I'm not going to lend you the money. And from what I know, Toby isn't so poor that he can't even provide food."
Emma must have been used to having maid service and eating at fancy restaurants. She couldn't adjust to becoming poor while Toby could no longer give her much money to buy handbags or shoes and clothes.
So she came to me to borrow money, and perhaps she approached more than one person. But all of Emma's previous friends were of the same character like her, and it was impossible to lend to Emma who was no longer a young lady from an elite family.
"Emily, you bitch! It's all your fault! If it wasn't for you, how could I be so poor, and Toby wouldn't be broke! I hate you, Emily! I will make you pay!"
Emma's voice was so loud that she stopped pretending because I refused her plea. She kept yelling at me and insulting me.
I felt that Emma was now like a clown in a circus and that she couldn't hurt me anymore. I hung up on her decisively, not caring at all about Emma's threats.
"Dylan, do you have something for me?"
Andre had taken Kate out to some unknown destination, and I was pushing my shopping cart alone in the supermarket when I suddenly received a call from Dylan.
I hadn't seen Dylan since the day he told me about Nathan's plan. I still don't understand why he wanted to help me, and I never believed Dylan's words that he still loved me.
"Emily, do you have a minute? I'd like to take you to lunch, just tomorrow. I have something important to tell you, so please do come tomorrow."
I frowned, wondering what was so important that Dylan needed to tell me. Did Nathan's father have some new plan for Andre's company that Dylan knew about?
But I couldn't refuse Dylan's invitation, because he had helped me with Nathan's affairs. If it wasn't for him, Nathan's plan would have worked, and I might have broken up with Andre because of it.
"Okay, send me the address, and I'll be there tomorrow."
Andre and Kate didn't go home, and when I called, he told me Jane had left them at the villa for the night. I didn't doubt Andre's words and went back to my bedroom to sleep.
"Dylan, sorry I'm late. Did you order dinner?"
I hurried to the restaurant address Dylan had sent me and upon entering I saw Dylan sitting in the window seat. he looked like he had been here a long time and I hurried up to apologize.
"It's okay, I know you have a busy schedule. I've already ordered your food, and it's all your favorite food.
Dylan looked very different from before, he seemed to have become much more mature, no longer cranky or only concerned with his interests. This made me a little surprised and a little curious about what Dylan had been going through all this time.
"Sorry, Dylan, you said on the phone earlier that you had something very important to tell me, can you say it now?"
I still couldn't quite handle being in the same space as Dylan, and although I was no longer sad that he had betrayed me, there was no way I could sit with him over lunch like friends.
"Emily, I suggest you finish your lunch before you listen to me, or I'm afraid you'll lose your appetite because of it."
Dylan was acting so mysterious that I couldn't understand what he was up to, but my manners wouldn't allow me to leave now. I had to finish the food Dylan had prepared for me, my least favorite steak along with a salad.
"Emily, I want you to trust me, just like I did the last time I told you about Claude's plan. I want you to leave Andre and be with me, I love you."
"Dylan, if you invited me to lunch just to tell me that, then I refuse. There is no way I can be a couple with you again, goodbye."
I thought Dylan must be crazy, otherwise, how could he say something like that. I thought he had matured a lot before, but now I think it was just his disguise.
There was no way I could give up on Andre, who loved me and go back to Dylan, who had betrayed me. I got up to leave, but Dylan yanked my wrist.
"The first thing you need to do is to get back to the person you love. You're just being kept around by Mr. Vincent as a substitute."
"Dylan, are you crazy? How can you say something like that, do you think everyone is like you?"
How could I believe Dylan and doubt Andre, Andre, and I were about to get engaged, how could he just treat me as a substitute, no one would marry a substitute!
"I'm not crazy, everything I said is true, Emily, you must believe me. kelly is back home now, Mr. Vincent will remarry her because of the baby, and then you will be kicked out of the villa. And Vincent is simply not loyal enough to you, he went out with other women while he was dating you, and I have the photos here to prove it."
I looked at the photo in Dylan's hand, taken when I had just started my internship. Andre was having dinner with a woman, and Kate was sitting next to him.
I recognized the woman as Nathan's fiancée, Miss Rosen, and simply didn't want to believe Dylan's words. No one would bring their daughter along on a date with a woman, much less Andre, which is very rude.
"Sorry, Dylan, I can't take your word for it. I have things to do, so I'll leave. What are you doing Dylan, let go of me!"
