CHAPTER FIFTY-NINE.

(Meliora's POV)

I gasped for air as it felt like I could not breathe well anymore, my hands were clenched to my chest as my fingers seemed like they were getting numb again. The last thing that I would want to hear was the death of Brian.

Just as I tried taking another step, I felt my feet trembling, but I never wanted to give in to that, Elder Morris just stared at me, without saying a word just like before.

In a swift movement, my hands left my chest and I cringed onto the corners of the bed to make a stand. I stared at the motionless man who was on the bed, indeed it was Brian. I looked back again as my eyes met with that of Elder Morris., I also didn't want her to see me in pain, so I turned again to take a look at Brian.

Suddenly, my eyes blinked, and my heart skipped for a second as I stared at him,

Yes, Brian wasn't dead, he was alive, although his breath was faint and slow. My lips were about to say a word, but it felt like it didn't send the right signal to my brain, I stood there for some seconds as I tried to observe more and see if my instincts were right., I didn't want to imagine things, and the worst that would happen was if my assumptions were not true.

Just as I did, I wiped my eyes pretty well, as I stared back at him, I just hoped this was true because I wouldn't want Martha to be in pain.

Fortunately as my eyes blinked, I noticed the faint breathing on one of the dudes on his neck, and immediately a tear drilled from my eyes.

“He is not dead, he is alive, he is still breathing” I stammered as I held Brian's hands trying to look at his face if he was going to at least blink his eyebrows.

I had expected Elder Morris' surprised reaction, I mean if there was anything, I had expected her to rush towards Brian and see if there was anything she could do to save him, it was clear that he needed urgent attention. But the reverse was the case, Elder Morris didn't seem quite excited as the words left my mouth, she stood glued to the ground.

There was silence in the room as my hands stopped for a moment, just like there was a pause. I slowly withdrew them from Brian's neck when I had tried checking his pulse earlier. I needed to understand the situation. Why was Elder Morris acting up ? What was really happening ?

I turned back to her slowly as I looked her in the eyes. I definitely wasn't expecting this reaction, it was unlike her, I expected her to spring into action, at least for the sake of Martha. The room remained silent as we both stared at each other, another tear tried to escape my eyes, which I quickly wiped away.

“I never said he was dead” Elder Morris broke the silence after about a minute.

This was a statement I didn't seem to comprehend. I had solely thought that he was dead when I had come into the room earlier. This obviously stated that she knew that Brian was alive, But why was she not doing anything to save him? Did she just hate Brian all of a sudden ?

“You knew he was alive ?” I asked as tears rolled down from my eyes, this time I wasn't even ready to wipe them off.

I was done trying to hide my emotions. Likewise, I also wanted to believe that this was a lie, and I was also assuming this, I couldn't think of the fact that she knew Brian was breathing faintly and was going to be dead if he wasn't attended too urgently.

“Yes, I knew Elder Morris answered, a ball of tears forming in her eyes as she stared at me.

“Why then has treatment not begun? We could save him at this minute, Brian needs our help now” I managed to talk as I swallowed the lump in my throat which seemed so painful.

Again, she didn't utter a word, her eyes fixated on Brian for returning to me. If there was anything, I didn't understand why she had called for me?, why on earth has she asked me to come? What was even my purpose here if she wasn't ready to treat him?

“I'm sorry Elder Morris, I will do what I can to bring him back” I said as I gnashed my teeth as I spoke.

It was clear that she just kept silent, she wasn't ready to tell me anything, nor was she ready to treat Brian and the goddess forbids that I stay and watch Brian die not in my care. I quickly rolled my sleeves as I tried to raise Brian up in a better position, at least I needed to do whatever could be done to save him.

It wasn't just even about Brian, they were still waiting a lot for Brian and Martha and I couldn't just watch everything end this way.

My hands hung in the air as I tried to place them on Brian's neck. I couldn't understand why the sudden stop, honestly, I wasn't ready for all of this.

“Why are you stopping me, Elder Morris?” I asked as I turned to look at her.

This was absurd, at least if she wasn't ready to treat him, I was going to do that without her help. But her next word struck me like a lightning as I tried to process what she was trying to say.

“He is far gone and at this moment, he is a threat” she answered.

However, she held my hands firmly not trying to let me go even as I tried to free up my hands

I shook my head slowly as tears made their way on my cheeks as I tried explaining to her that we could still save him, there was nothing impossible and at this time we needed to save him.

“I don't understand you ma, We can do something if we start now, we can save him if we begin now” I begged as I stared into her eyes with those pitiful eyes.

“Why then did you have to call me here?, or was it not to treat him? How on earth does a healer abandon his patient, we can't do this” I said as I sobbed.

I wished she was going to hear me out, but she shook her head in return telling me that that wasn't possible, she obviously ordered me to stop any treatment or care.

“He is far gone, and like I said he is a threat to everyone” she replied as she slowly let go of my hands.

I couldn't understand, this was the second time I was hearing this, what exactly does she mean by a threat to everyone, Brian was a peacemaker and a warrior at that, What was she talking about?

“What do you mean ?” I asked as I fell to the ground close to the bed.

“He has the curse, he will kill everyone”
