Chapter 100 Nikki

The cab driver was humming a familiar song as I hopped in and gave him the address. I knew I couldn’t run all the way back to the penthouse and with Brody, Mick and Charles already ahead of me, I knew I needed a quick ride there.

“So, you new to New York?” He asks and I fight the urge to tell him off and roll my eyes.

“No, I live here. Now please, step on it, it’s an emergency.” I state then sit back and pull my phone from my back pocket. I need to call Rand and tell him what I know. He answers immediately, sounding out of breath and worry struck me hard. “Rand?”

“It’s Bronson, I was on the phone with him and then suddenly it turned off. I heard what sounded like a scuffle, I’m on my way to him now but I’m in traffic, where are you?”

I couldn’t answer him fast enough, my mind was reeling on all the information he just threw at me. Bronson was hurt. Does he know that for sure? Was he watching the footage? I shook my head and tried to keep my thoughts about me. I couldn’t jeopardize Bronson’s life by not reacting fast enough. I wouldn’t do that to him.

“Nikki?”

“I’m on my way there. I’m coming from the Serendin, so I’m hoping I can get there in the next twenty minutes.” Even as the words leave me, I felt the dread of the situation. Both Rand and I wouldn’t make it if whoever were hurting him, needed to make this quick. Mick taught me everything I know about conning and scheming people, and one the most important rules to memorize, is timing is everything.

Get in, get out, keep moving.

“Nikki, I need to know, what does this man have planned for Bronson.” His voice sounds distant, something I’m sure he’s learned in his past training.

“I wish I knew Rand, the normal plan was to not hurt him, merely take his money behind his back. We never leveled out the details, but if they’ve done something like this, in broad daylight, I don’t know what to expect. Mick’s never been one to show his face, he’s the man behind the scheme’s the bran of each operation, but he’s gone off the deep end, and on top of that he’s left every one of the Bandits in the dark, including my brother and his right hand man Charles. It’s just him and Anabe.”

“Sh*t.” He mumbles. “Alright, I’ll try and hurry, you do the same. I’ll meet you there. Do not go inside until I get here Nikki, do you hear me?”

“I hear you.” I state but every fiber of my body is lying. If Rand isn’t there by the time I am, I’ll go in without him. Just knowing they are most likely hurting Bronson makes my skin crawl. This is all my fault. Why didn’t I just tell Bronson sooner? Why did I agree to any of this in the first place?

I hang up and wait while my nerves allow my mind to jump to every conclusion orchestrated. I imagine him lying dead in a pool of his own blood, I imagine him barely holding onto to life as I get there just seconds too late. I imagine him dying in my arms, I imagine everything in between. And it’s in that moment I realize that my love for Bronson has become so much more than I originally thought. I won’t let anyone hurt him, and that includes my little brother.

For once in my life, he does not come first.
