Chapter 80 Bronson
I watch as Nikki runs back over to where Jim and Landen are helping, the f*cker load the tree onto the roof of our SUV. I’m just hanging up with Rand when I hear my name being called from across the lot. I turn and spot George McCall coming over, his small granddaughter clinging his hand tightly.
“George, good morning.” I state extending my hand out. He shakes it immediately then looks down at his granddaughter.
“We’re getting in some last-minute shopping and Elizabeth here wanted to come and see the trees. She always enjoys picking one out for us to put right outside the home. What about you?”
“My girlfriend. She wanted a tree and I suppose we just waited last minute.”
“Girlfriend?” He asks, surprising even me. It’s the first time I’ve referred to Nikki in that way, and the first time I have admitting to even myself that it is truly over between Cassandra and myself. Although I should have been more convinced when Rand found out not twenty-four hours after our split that she was trying to take not only my money but was already spreading rumors about me to my partners.
Rand says he took care of it, and I trust the man with my life.
“It’s a long story my friend.”
“Ah, I would love to hear it one day.” He chuckles. His granddaughter must get bored of our talk because she finds a pebble on the ground the most interesting thing in the word. “So, I suppose I should tell you about Nicole Myers?”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean I’m giving her a run for her money.”
‘What?” My anger grows but I keep it in check, certain I’m misunderstanding the situation.
“You remember when I told you how I was conned in the park that day, with Elizabeth here as the goat?”
“Yes.” Doubt circles around in my mind but I keep it at bay. I can’t think negatively. Not when I just got her.
“She was the one conned me. When you sent her to me, I thought I would have gotten a call from her that she couldn’t do it anymore. Figured she would have wanted to save face, but alas, she was shocked to see me at my desk. She stuck to her guns, worked all day long, but I won’t say I wasn’t hard on her. She’s a criminal, part of an organization known as the Bandits, at least that it what my people have told me about her. I won’t get rid of her; my goal is to make her suffer until she eventually quits.” He chuckles, but my mind is reeling.
Nikki was the one that conned him? I can remember George telling me over the phone one day, part of his rant of one of the reasons why when he retired, he would leave the city, but I had no idea it was her. How could she take advantage of a person losing a child? I know her past life, but is it still apart of her? And what do I make out of George? Do I allow him to continue to torture Nikki?
“Bronson? Are you alright?” He calls out. I look up and lock eyes with him, just as I see Nikki coming around the corner laughing at something behind her. She spots the two of us and her smile turns into an instant frown.
“She’s quitting.”
“I beg your pardon?”
“The job Mr. McCall. Miss Myers will not longer be apart of your team. I won’t allow you to hurt someone, to embarrass someone for the simple reason that you have something over them. Especially not Nicole.” Nikki makes her debut, standing right beside me. She must see my anger because she doesn’t put her hands around me. Doesn’t touch me at all.
“Bronson?” I take her hand, not giving her another moment to speak and walk towards the SUV with Rand seated behind the wheel We get in and buckle immediately and I stay silent for the rest of the ride home.
F*cking winter wonderland.
