Chapter 34 Nikki

My foot sways back and forth, anger and frustration apparent on my face, but I continue to try and push those feelings down.

“So, you expect me to believe that succumbing to your company, leaves my employees covered?” Mr. Blodgehorn laughs, his assistant quiet as she continues starring into her laptop screen.

“Your employees will be covered Mr. Blodgehorn, it’s no mockery. I’m simply trying to become more successful, and with a company such as yours, I know we can help each other out.” Bronson’s broad shoulders remain straight as he speaks to Mr. Blodgehorn with respect and resilience.

The moment Bronson and I stepped off the plane in Seattle Washington, everything around us had changed. I would say it was due to the fact that we were going straight to the meeting he had scheduled and that means we needed to try and get as much work done as possible in the car, but I knew the truth.

I was angry with his assumptions, and his pride forbid him from doing the one thing he was required to do.

Apologize.

“You do realize that you have quite a reputation right Mr. Fortworth?”

My eyes leave that of Roger Blodgehorn’s and land on Bronson’s back once again. His massive body takes up the entire chair and since the assistants sit behind their superior, I’m able to watch him with a new perspective. No longer the kind and generous man he assumes rescued me from the clutches of the streets, I’m watching the Bronson Fortworth the world sees, the man that controls it all.

“I understand your weariness, truly I do, but do you really have another option?” Bronson’s smug attitude is pushing Blodgehorn further and further away and as much as every fiber of my being wants to jump in and help, that isn’t exactly the job description.

I’m to record everything happening, take notes of the supposed deal, and send everything over to his office once we are done here.

“You think I have no other options? You think I need your company and your company only? You are not the only ones that wish to acquire my company Mr. Fortworth.”

“I’m thinking you mean the Anabe Corporation?” I blink a few times, wondering what they are talking about. I’ve heard of the Anabe corporation, it’s supposed to be one of the best companies back home in New York, putting some serious competition out there for Fortworth Inc.

“Yes, he’s one of many.”

“And yet you have not gone through Alexander Anabe.”

This angers Mr. Blodgehorn, I look over at his assistant, watching as she types at the speed of light atop her small laptop placed lightly on her lap. Looking down at mine, I’ve taken a few notes but nothing in compared to what I’m sure she has.

I knew I wasn’t cut out for this.

“I think I’m going to have to ask you to leave Mr. Fortworth. I won’t stand here and be disrespected in my own company.” Looking up, I look around and notice Mr. Blodgehorn on his feet with anger piercing through his gray eyes. He’s an older man, small and thin, and has graying hair, but if my time on the streets has taught me anything, it’s that he’s a genuine person, that much you can tell by looking at him. He just seems to be on his last thread of sanity, something Bronson is taking full advantage of.

“Mr. Blodgehorn listen I think you’re being a little dramatic here. I am simply– “

“No, you are implying that I cannot protect my staff and you are her to make a mockery of– “

Something inside of me snaps, I stand up, pushing my chair back and blurting out the only thing I can think of to stop this back and forth banter. Bronson may know business, but clearly people are not his forte.

“The Statue of Gorge Washington.”
