Chapter 48 Nikki
“I see you have your own entourage.” Maggie responds as Landen makes his way over towards me. Rand and Jim are standing near the two large SUV’s that are scattered in the middle of the small quiet street. The doors are still open, and the lights are bright, indicating that they haven’t turned the cars off.
It looks like a damn crime scene.
“I just feel for your neighbors.”
“Oh, please honey, people are nosy by nature. Even your presence here earlier probably has them peering out of the windows to see what’s happening.” I look around instinctively and sure enough there are a few people peering through only to reside back into their homes when they see that I have noticed.
My smile quirks up at that.
“Miss Myers?” I turn to Landen and notice he not only looks like he wants to scream and shout but looks also relieved. He turns his head towards my former foster mother and gives her a curt nod. He looks hysterical with his sunglasses still intact making me cross my arms and roll my eyes.
“I’m fine Landen, and please call me Nikki, we’ve been over this.” He doesn’t say anything, just continues starring at Maggie. I huff out an annoyed breath and turn towards her myself only to find her laughing.
“Either you’ve gotten a lot more popular than I remember you being, or you’ve got someone pretty powerful looking out for you.” She states and it causes me to give her a warm smile.
I told Maggie everything, about Bronson, about my goal to help the Bandits, about Brody’s life being in my hands, everything, and she gave the exact advice that I needed. It was up to me to put an end to this, before it’s too late for redemption. She’s acting clueless now, and I appreciate her not blowing the reason why I came here.
“Thank you, Maggie.” I lean in for a hug and am satisfied when I not only receive it, but it’s accompanied by a kiss to my cheek. My voice crackles and I have to old back the sob threatening to come out. “Thank you for everything.”
“And thank you Nikki. I’ve always wondered about you, and now I know you’re just fine.” I nod my head and turn to head back, giving Landen a playful shove, one that doesn’t even make him budge, as I pass him. He follows quickly leading me to the SUV Rand is driving.
Great. Now I suppose I’m going to get a large lecture about not running away and how I’m a disappointment.
“Have fun Miss Myers?”
My brows narrow in confusion as Rand peels out of the driveway, Landen and Jim following behind us. I turn towards the street and wave a goodbye to Maggie, and smile when she returns the gesture.
“How’d you find me?” I ask once I can no longer see Maggie. I enjoyed our talk and now that it’s time for me to face my reality again, I feel a sense of calm and gratitude.
“I couldn’t, not at first. We looked around the city, figured you might have just wanted some time alone to do whatever it is that girls your age do.” My lips quirk up at him as he eyes me in the rearview mirror. “Then I looked into your past.”
Nodding my head, I look out of the window and watch as house after house pass us by. We enter the city quietly and I look up when I hear Rand clearing his throat.
“You’re not angry?”
“With the fact that you came hunting me down? Nah, I figured you guys would eventually find me. I needed a ride home anyways. Wouldn’t have been much fun to walk.” It’s true, it took me well over an hour to get to Maggie’s place and that was through three busses and a cab.
“With the fact that I looked into your past.” He shuffles in his seat, almost as if he is ashamed of his behavior. Interesting. “I found an old address under your file. Thought it would be worth a shot to try there. Was that…. was that your….”
