Chapter 61 Nikki
The streets of New York are thriving as I bounce between one person after another. After Cassandra had gone upstairs to do whatever it is that she does, I finished my breakfast, ran up to my room to get dressed and ran out of the penthouse.
I had to escape being in the same house as her. I wasn’t going to allow her to see what her cruel words had done to me.
After walking over thirty minutes, I stop when I spot an old run-down library and peer inside through the windows. I adore books, always have, but after joining with the Bandits, I had to limit myself on going any place unnecessary. It was bad enough authorities were now starting to recognize us, I didn’t want them trailing where I normally go.
So, books became afterthoughts for me, and I simply reread the ones I already had. Romance has always been the genre of choice and when I note that they have an enormous collection of the gritty, dirty, cheesy books, I head inside and take a look.
It’s busy inside, mostly children and their parents sitting down in a color carpeted area filled with children’s stories of ducks and bunny rabbits. A woman sits in the middle of the group and begins reading a story about foster families. I catch myself listening as well, wanting to see for myself how the story ends.
After a few moments, I shake my head and walk to the back area where the romance books are located. I Turn the corner and am just about to pick up a book I spot from an author I love but stop when a woman bumps into me, apologizing immediately.
“I apologize, I wasn’t watching where I was going.”
“It’s alright, it’s pretty busy in here.” I state then go around her and grab the book. Studying the back, I read the blurb only to take my eyes of the text and notice the woman is still standing there starring over at me. She looks familiar, in a strange sense of a way. Her eyes are a bright blue and she has long blonde thin hair. Her face is pale, as if she is sick but her clothing is that of a successful business woman. “Did you need something?”
“No, sorry. I supposed that was rude to just be starring over at you…. I just…. you look awfully familiar is all.”
I look down, not exactly comfortable with those words. Most of the time when I hear that someone has recognized me, it’s from the days that I have most likely stollen from them or their place of work. I look around for the exit, cursing when I see this mysterious woman somehow has me trapped. I speak, then begin moving towards her, keeping my eyes down casted enough for her to not notice my face too much.
“I guess I have that face.” Walking past her, I stop when her hand reaches out and stops me from moving. I look up to see her angelic face is smiling down at me.
“I didn’t mean to offend you. I’m not the best at making small talk and meeting new people.” She says politely. Her eyes downcast and I can tell I have made her uncomfortable. She clearly isn’t someone that means to rat me out, or to call the police because of some mishap from my past.
Pushing back the loose strands of hair and tucking them behind my ear, I try again. “You didn’t. I suppose I have the same problem. I have never even attempted to make friends. Not really anyways.”
“We really are the same. I’m Clara.” She let’s go of my arm, and that’s when I notice she has the same book I was just looking at checking out tucked into her arm basket.
“Nikki.” I announce my name, pointing at myself. “Hey, you love Bart Harold’s work too huh?” A light blush covers her soft features and I giggle at that.
“I do love his work. It’s strange that a guy can dig so deep into the depths of the woman’s brain.”
“Have you read the one with the princess and knight?”
“That’s my favorite one.” I laugh at her excitement and just like that, the two of us become friends inside a small isle in the middle of a public library.
