Chapter 45 Bronson

Thirty minutes later, we enter the city of Chicago, my next venture, and the one I am most eager to obtain. It’s close enough to home, that I can fly out anytime and check on my investment. The CEO of Northington Enterprise is one of the most technical establishments. It’s low on the podium for its size but something I saw extreme potential in. Especially when I heard that they are now dipping into medical machinery.
The SUV pulls up at the Viceroy Hotel and I exit the car and come around the other side to wait on Nikki, a fact she ignores by walking right past me and right for the entrance. She’s still angry with me, but it’s starting to feel like so much more.
What the hell happened in the last two days?
Why is she treating me with such anger and resentment?
Shaking my head, I follow her lead and head right for the entrance, stopping short when I see a man quietly speaking with Nikki. Her body is stiff and her posture tight. Rand beats me to the man by stepping in between the two, pushing the man back and that’s when I notice his recorder sticking out of his hand as he extends it further and further into Nikki.
“I said get out of here, or you will be escorted out.” Rand shouts and I walk over towards Nikki who is shaking, only not with fear. No, my girls pissed, and I hold her back just as her anger is unleashed on the walking dipstick.
“How f*kcing dare you come at me like that. Do you have any idea who the hell you’re talking to? I have the ability to end your pathetic blog and end your world and everyone attached to it. If you ever come up to me or Bronson again, I will slit your goddamn throat and–"
Covering her mouth, I lead us further into the lobby and let Rand and Jim take care of the asshole while Landen sticks by our side. I want to shove my fist into the jerk’s face, but I’ m too busy keeping Nikki’s mouth closed before we get sued or worse, arrested.
I walk us towards the check in servicing desk and look back to notice the man walking away quickly after Rand speaks quietly with him, his camera hanging loosely from his neck. Looking down at Nikki, I notice her breathing heavy and anxious. We’ve had paparazzi around us since leaving New York but it hasn’t been as bad this moment. Nikki’s anger isn’t just focused solely on the man that no doubt tried to take her photo, it’s centering something else. Something heavier.
“Nikki, what did he–"
“He asked how much you were paying me. The a**hole had the audacity to try and get me to admit that I was your wh*re.” She doesn’t bother looking at me. Her gaze is lowered to the ground while her arms are crossed at her chest.
Anger slices through me at an alarming rate. I want to hunt down the a**hole and destroy him, destroy his future, but I know it wouldn’t solve anything. Instead, I blow out a deep breath and turn to check us in. Before I could speak, I hear Nikki mutter something underneath her breath.
“What?”
“I don’t want to come with you to this meeting. Is it alright if I just stay inside the hotel?”
I want to ask her what the hell happened that is causing her to react this way, but I already know the truth. That afternoon at the amusement park, I ruined everything with the way I reacted and on top of that, I pushed her away and refused to speak with her. Now, I’m forced to watch as she rebuilds the wall back up that I spend days trying to break.
I can’t be upset with her choice to stay as far away from me as she possibly can, so I do the only thing I can think of, I nod my head, and turn away from her.
