Chapter 41 Bronson
What was I thinking?
That’s the question that was continuously running around in my mind. What the hell was I thinking?
“Are you coming?” I turn and watch as Nikki giggles then pushes the loose strands of blonde hair out of her face. Her eyes are dancing with humor and her cheeks are flush from the cool breeze November is bringing us.
“Are you sure this is what you want to spend your free day doing?” I take one more long look around the front of the amusement park and shake my head in disgust.
When I told Nikki that I was willing to grant her this wish, to do something from what she calls fun, I had no idea it would result in us going to a small-town amusement park.
What was I thinking?
“Bronson.” My eyes match up with hers and I see the excitement growing in waves. “Let go. For once in your controlled life, just let go and have some fun with me.”
Nikki extends her hand out towards mine. I don’t hesitate when I take it and allow her to lead me through the throng of people in line. Nikki had gotten Landen to purchase our tickets online so apparently there is no wait for us. Five minutes later, our hands are stamped, and we are allowed inside.
The smell of oil is the first thing I notice. Looking around I find food stand after food stand, giving us bold lettered prices filled with swirls and excitement. Screams deafen my ears as children of all ages shout from the top of the lungs over the rides drowning out the noise of the machines.
Nikki pulls me further into the park and stops at the first attraction that catches her eyes. I give it a confused look then look down at the woman that is always causing me to think on my toes.
“A merry go round?” My lips quirk up when she turns and places her hands on here hips giving me the sass, I’ve come to know is what her personality is mostly made up of.
“You got a problem with my first choice Fortworth?” Throwing my hands up, I smile and give her my best defensive pose. I never can tell what the hell Nikki has planned. There are times she acts like a child, times she acts like an adult far older than her twenty years, and times she acts like an angelic form, not from this planet of thieves and hurdles.
“Wouldn’t think of it ma’am.”
“Good. I like to start slow and make my way up to the big ones.”
“And we all know merry go rounds are meant for that first ride thrill.” I mutter and laugh when she turns, and this time just narrows her eyes on me.
Christ, would I let this woman kick me in the balls just to make her smile?
“If you must know, I’ve never been on a single ride in my life, so I thought it would be nice to take a ride on each one. Starting with the small ones.” Shock must register in my eyes because she gives me a small smile then turns and looks back towards the line that suddenly seems to be moving at a quickened speed.
How could I be such an idiot? She’s been in foster care majority of her life. I don’t know what caused her and Brody to leave their last home, but I know, thanks to Rand’s research, that they were both under the age of eighteen. She’s never had a chance to do any of the things this small amusement park has to offer. she’s only ever had to survive and make sure both her and brother are safe.
Before I could speak, the line moves forward and it’s our turn to climb aboard one of the metal animals. I follow Nikki to the horses, helping her climb onto one, while I settle beside her, in some kind of strange looking ostrich. Nikki laughs at my discomfort, then takes out her phone and takes what feels like ten dozen photos. I mimic her, pulling out my phone as well and take a few, only I don’t focus on the full picture. I zoom into her face and snap about thirty.
Her smile is doing things to my chest, things I’ve never experienced, and I need to capture it while I can.
