Chapter 50 Bronson

The blare of the horn sounds as Rand swerves in and out of the congested traffic. I type a quick message to Bethany at which I get an instant reply from her.
“Glad to be home?” Nikki asks from beside me and I turn and look over at her smile. Damn this woman is beautiful.
“Yes, although I hate that we have to get back into a new routine so soon.” The trip went longer than I would have liked, not giving us much time to rest before work begins for the both us tomorrow morning.
I’m not exactly ready to share her with the world just yet.
“Well, at least we have the rest of the day to relax.” My eyes find hers once again.
Nikki has been in a good mood since coming back from her previous foster mother’s home. When Rand called me and told me where she went, I felt horrible for making a big deal out of her leaving. I told her she was free to roam and knowing she most likely went to get some kind of clarity, made me feel worse.
I want to ask her why she went there, why after all these years did she decide to visit a former foster home. But I didn’t want her to feel like she had to tell me. It was her business, her day, her past life that she most likely had to face. Which makes me immediately think of Cassandra.
I need to tell Nikki about my fiancé. Last night I received a message from Cassandra telling me that she missed me and that she couldn’t wait to come home. I felt guilt immediately. I haven’t thought of anything related to Cassandra since telling Rand the plan for Nikki to live with me, and now that the two women in my life will be under the same rood without either of them knowing the other even exists, I know I need to say something, now.
Nikki has seen a picture of Cassandra the time she called but she has no idea what or who she is to me. This is it, it’s time to speak about my secrets.
“Nikki, listen…”
“I already know Bronson.”
“What?”
She turns towards me and blesses me with another smile that hits my chest hard.
“I know what you want to say. I know you think my life isn’t exactly a Cinderella story, but you’ve changed all that. That’s why you pulled away that day at the park, isn’t?”
“Nikki–"
“You thought I would doubt myself, that I would immediately regret anything we stepped into because of my past. You’re right. I would have, I know I would. I’m afraid of what could lead between the two of us, but I know I want to try.”
She takes my hands in hers and gives me another smile. Before I could say anymore, Rand speaks up from the driver’s seat, interrupting us.
“We’re here Sir.” I look out the window and spot my building. Rand steps out and walks over to Nikki’s door, opening it and helping her out. I dent miss the look of anger he shoots my way.
Great, now he’s upset with me.
Stepping out of the SUV, I walk over to Jim and Landen, giving them both the envelopes filled with their compensation for their work. Both Jim and Landen are paid well with me, but I always make sure to give them something extra for trips such as this. Rand gets one each time I leave the state, but he prefers it to be sent straight to his wife.
“Thank you, sir.” Landen states then extends his hand out to me shaking it firmly. Jim steps up next and does the same thing. Nikki stands beside me and waves them goodbye at which they both give her a genuine smile.
Yeah, she’s got that effect on everyone it seems.
