Chapter 76 Bronson
I’ve never noticed Christmas before, not since leaving my parents and teaming up with my grandfather, but suddenly, the streets of New York aren’t just busy with mashes of people, it’s littered with color and wonder, small snow specks fall onto the hood as people make their way around the SUV while holding onto gift bag after gift bag.
We make it home in record time and I take the elevator up to the penthouse, the small Tiffany's box inside my suit jacket. Rand stands beside me whistling some Christmas tune at which I shake my head and chuckle. “Your timing is impeccable.” I state and watch as he turns his head and looks at me.
“Sir?”
“I wouldn’t normally allow you to whistle some ungodly Christmas tune around me.”
“Then I should be grateful you changed your mind this year.”
“How did you know Rand?” I ask and although he turns around with an inquisitive face, I know he understands what I am asking.
“Simple sir. You’re a good man, and although it often takes some time to show it, you have always been a good man. Greed was something you had to go through in order to see how small the world could be for some. Nicole has taught you to take life slowly, appreciate all of the small things one would normally take for granted. I knew it was only a matter of time until you came back around.”
I clear my throat, not wanting to cry like a small child for the tenth time today. When the elevator stops, I step out and come to a halt immediately. Rand runs towards the screaming match going on and I take a deep breath, place down the powder blue box, and walk over to spot Cassandra and Nikki in a heated discussion. Neither sees me at first, and I don’t quite make an appearance yet as I watch Rand step in between the two as he holds Nikki back at arm’s length.
“I want you out of my home you disgusting snake of a woman.”
“I’m a snake? You’re the one who has no problem sleeping around on your fiancé. You’re pathetic and deserve everything you are about to receive.”
My feet march further into the room, just in time to spot Cassandra making her move. Her hand comes out as Rand is turned, attempting to speak quietly with Nikki and strikes her face, sending Nikki flying back along with Rand protecting her from falling.
“You stupid cow, I am twice the woman you are. Bronson and I are to be married and when we are, you will be out on the streets where you belong.”
“Enough!” I shout and step in front of Cassandra blocking her from Nikki’s view. I have had it with this woman demanding her presence in my life. I’m no fool to not understand that she has never been faithful, and I know what she is truly after with our nuptials, but to hurt someone I care for, to treat her so badly, will not be tolerated.
“Bronson? Why are you home so early?”
“Do not play games with me Cassandra.” I turn at catch Nikki’s eyes, heat rages through my skull when I see a long thin scratch located just below her eye. I turn back to Cassandra, giving her everything I have been holding in since the day I proposed. “You’re done. I want you out of my home and out of my life.”
“You can’t do that. I am your fiancé. You can’t throw away our relationship, our hard work, everything that we have been working towards since we agreed to this.”
And there it is. It was nothing more than an agreement to her. Never once does she mention love, and the realization that I never loved her either, comes through the forefront of my mind. Nikki was right, it wasn’t healthy what I was doing.
“I want you out Cassandra, our business deal, is over.”
“Have you been having an affair with this pathetic foster child Bronson? Is that it? You want the young wh*re that opens her legs to get ahead in her life? Well then you go ahead and have at her. I was better off without you, and I already know men that will gladly take me in, the same ones that already have while I was away in Europe.”
I had already known Cassandra was cheating on me, but to hear her say it aloud, to hear her claim is so boldly, makes me glad I never married the woman.
Rand steps up in front of Cassandra, blocking the two of us, and whispers something in her ear. Her body tenses and she looks back at me and Nikki, then huffs and leaves screaming obscenities as her feet drag her to the elevator.
“I’ll send for my things.” Is the last thing my ex fiancé says before the elevator door closes, and I am finally free.
