Chapter 13 The Strange Man at the Hospital
Silas's Perspective:
I had my most trusted guy take the medicine bottle to the hospital for testing. It took a bit to get the results back.
Seeing Cecilia's uneasy expression, I narrowed my eyes and spoke coldly, "You better hope that's really Alex's medicine."
Cecilia clutched the hem of her dress and forced a smile. "Of course! I'm Alex's mother, after all."
"Stepmother," I corrected flatly.
My words stung her, and her face changed slightly. "I'm feeling a bit dizzy like I might be coming down with something. I'll go rest in my room."
Cecilia left with the help of a maid. Seeing Alex looking down, I softened my tone and asked, "Hey buddy, how about we go out to eat today?"
Alex clapped his hands in delight. "Awesome! Dad, can we have burgers?"
"Sure thing." I smiled, lifting him into my arms. Alex was startled at first but then burst into giggles.
I had never seen him smile so happily around Cecilia.
Over the past five years, I had given Cecilia plenty of assets, enough to make up for that night. When I later found myself uninterested in her, I didn't send her away, thinking Alex might need a mother to care for him.
But today's situation made me question whether I had made the right decision.
Seraphina's Perspective:
Getting that email from the detective only made me more determined to stay in this city, even though it held all my painful memories.
My mom died here, my friend Amy died here for me, and Charles went missing here. This city was the source of all my nightmares.
But now, I had awakened my inner wolf and was no longer the weakling everyone in the pack could bully.
I would reclaim everything that was mine!
At the hospital,.
"Oh! Seraphina, it was a pleasure talking to you. Your professionalism is undeniable. I think we might be working together soon." Charlotte Miller, the head of the psychology department, warmly shook my hand. She was a well-maintained middle-aged woman with a somewhat theatrical way of speaking, but her excessive enthusiasm actually helped me relax during the interview.
"Hope Hospital is one of the top hospitals in the country. It would be an honor to work here." I winked playfully. "I'm glad to work with you."
"Hahaha! So am I." Charlotte laughed heartily.
A man wearing a mask happened to walk by and was almost knocked into the wall by Charlotte's exuberance.
"Oops, sorry!" I quickly apologized, instinctively reaching out to steady him.
The man stumbled, and two identical small bottles rolled out of his pocket. He hastily picked them up and stuffed them back into his coat. "It's OK. I'm fine."
Watching the man walk away, Charlotte frowned in confusion. "That guy looks a lot like the chairman."
After saying goodbye to Charlotte, I headed back to the hotel.
I was about to start my new job, and Lucas and Saki would be going to daycare. I also needed to find a house within a reasonable commuting distance. There was a lot to do. While I still had time, I wanted to spend as much of it as possible with them.
In the living room, the TV was playing cartoons. Saki leaned against Lucas, excitedly commenting on the show and occasionally feeding him chips.
I was busy in the kitchen, glancing back at them now and then; my heart was filled with happiness.
Silas's Perspective:
The test results came back, confirming that the bottle contained Alex's usual medicine.
I felt a pang of guilt. Over the years, Cecilia hadn't been particularly likable, but she hadn't been terrible either.
At least, in my eyes, she had been a decent stepmother.
Alex's condition had indeed improved significantly. Maybe I had misunderstood her, and everything she did was for Alex's well-being, to help him recover faster.
With that thought, I sighed and wiped the tears from her face. "Alright, stop crying. This might have been a misunderstanding. I may have wronged you."
Cecilia leaned pitifully against my chest.
"As long as you believe everything I do is for Alex's good, I'm content," Cecilia said, choking back her tears.
I knew I shouldn't push her away at this moment, but my body instinctively leaned back in resistance.
Lucas's Perspective:
What the heck? Silas actually believed that wicked woman?
Cecilia took advantage of Alex's autism, knowing he couldn't defend himself, and bullied him behind Silas's back.
Even the servants in this house didn't care about Alex and pretended not to see Cecilia's actions! This was outrageous!
I glared at Cecilia, who was snuggling pitifully in Silas's arms.
'Let's see whose tears are more effective!'
With that thought, I pouted and burst into tears.
"Dad," I cried, throwing myself at Silas and pushing Cecilia aside to jump into his arms.
