Chapter 37 Could They Be Seraphina's Old Enemies?

Lucas's Perspective:

"Hey, chill out. I got your back!" I said, feeling a bit awkward and under pressure as Alex looked at me with those big, admiring eyes.

Honestly, I'm not as brave as he thinks. I'm just a werewolf pup, and those grown-up werewolves out there could snap our necks like twigs.

Inside, I was freaking out. 'Mom, I miss you so much.'

'I swear on the Statue of Liberty, if I make it back to you in one piece, I'll never sneak out again.'

"I'll protect you too!" Alex saw right through my fear, grabbed my hand tight, and said it with all the seriousness in the world.

"You know my dad's a big deal. He must know I'm missing by now. He'll come to save us soon!" he added.

Yeah, compared to my helpless mom, Alex's dad is a powerhouse and way more likely to find us first.

So, our job now is to stay safe and not tick off those thugs any more than we have to.

Thinking that, I nodded.

Suddenly, we heard faint footsteps in the distance. Alex and I exchanged a look, quickly put the hemp rope back on our hands to fake being tied up, and then lay down on the ground, pretending to be out cold.

As soon as I hit the ground, Alex covered me with his body.

"Dude." I was stunned.

Alex gave me a reassuring smile. "Shush."

I couldn't get all emotional right now, so I shut my eyes and played dead.

Through a tiny gap, I peeked and saw Oliver Johnson, the ringleader who nabbed us, holding a phone. He was checking the area cautiously and even kicked Alex to make sure he was out before dialing a number.

I was boiling with anger at his roughness but didn't dare to move.

"We've got them, but why didn't you tell me they were twins?" As soon as the call connected, Oliver griped to the person on the other end.

He went on, "One of the little werewolves suddenly woke up and caught us off guard. We almost blew it and got hurt.

"The original price isn't cutting it now. You gotta pay us more."

"Fine. First, show me what that bitch's son looks like. Is he as annoying as she is?" A woman's voice came faintly from the other end of the phone. It sounded familiar, but I couldn't place it.

"Okay." Oliver was happy she agreed to the extra cash and snapped a pic of Alex's face.

Since Alex was almost completely covering me, the photo only showed his face and part of my body.

"Idiot!" A sharp scream came from the other end of the phone.

"What?" Oliver was stunned.

"Do you know who you captured? That's Alex! Silas's son. Why did you capture him?" The woman on the other end was clearly freaked out, her voice shaking.

"What?" Oliver was just as stunned, losing all his earlier swagger and looking visibly flustered.

"How come? You said the target was at the central square. Besides—" Oliver started, but the woman cut him off. "Yeah, I did! But you can't just grab any kid who looks the right age! I told you there was only one kid!"

"But they clearly..." Oliver tried to explain.

"Stop saying 'but'!" The woman was now panicking and couldn't calm down to listen to his excuses.

"Silas cherishes his son. If he knows Alex is missing, he'll come looking for him ASAP. He might already be on his way. If he catches us, we're toast!" The woman was clearly freaked out.

"What should we do?" Oliver, intimidated by the Alpha King's power, was now completely at a loss, forgetting to keep explaining.

"Listen, what happens next concerns both our lives. You better be fully alert and cooperate with me," the woman said, trying to stay calm.

"Yes!" Oliver nodded repeatedly and walked away with the phone.

As he walked away, I couldn't hear their conversation anymore, but at least I learned one important piece of info from their talk.

Silas was already on his way, and these thugs were scared of his power, so they wouldn't kill us for now.

"Hang in there!" Alex opened his eyes and said excitedly, "Dad will come to rescue us soon."

"Yeah!" I nodded, thinking about their conversation. "That woman's son."

That was what the woman on the phone said.

Alex was born without a mother, so it couldn't be him. Plus, their panic when they realized they had wrongly captured Silas's son further proved that Alex wasn't their original target.

It must be me. Alex got dragged into this mess because of me. But mom just got back from abroad, so it was unlikely she made so many enemies.

Could it be that mom's old enemies found out she was back and planned to target her? If that was the case, mom would be in constant danger in the future.

Thinking of this, my already uneasy heart grew heavier.

No matter what, even if it cost my life, I wouldn't let those villains harm mom in the slightest.

"Don't worry!" Alex saw my serious expression and thought I was still worried about our current situation. He held my hand and promised, "No matter what happens, my dad and I will protect you and your family! Trust me!"

Looking at Alex's innocent face, my anxiety gradually eased, and an unprecedented sense of security made me nod heavily, stopping my wild thoughts.

Next, Alex and I huddled in a corner, waiting for his dad to come to rescue us.

I don't know how long it took, but the locked iron door finally made a faint sound.

This made Alex and me light up with hope, looking over with anticipation.
