Chapter 42 The Only Enemy
Seraphina's Perspective:
So, the past few days in the hospital had been a rollercoaster. Lucas went from being all quiet and moody to his usual hyper, smart-aleck self. Sure, I was glad he was back to normal, but I couldn't help but get ticked off thinking about how he always ignored my instructions and got into trouble. Seeing him act all cute and clingy, trying to weasel his way out of it, just made me even madder.
"Mom, can you feed me?" Lucas noticed I was still fuming and decided to play the spoiled card, refusing to eat lunch on his own.
"Nope!" I snapped, not ready to let him off the hook that easy.
"Why not?" Lucas pouted, looking all hurt.
"Don't you think you're so grown-up? You don't need me anymore." I forced myself to look away, ignoring his puppy-dog eyes.
I had to drill it into his head how serious this was. His sneaky habits got him into this mess. He got lucky this time, but what about next time? Will he be so lucky again?
"No, it's not like that." Seeing I was genuinely mad, Lucas got all cautious. He grabbed my sleeve with his tiny hand and looked at me all pitiful. "Mom, don't be mad. I know I messed up. I won't do it again."
Hearing his sad little voice, my eyes started to sting, but I still didn't look at him.
"Mom, why won't you hug me? Do you hate me? My wound hurts." Lucas pulled up his sleeve, showing the bruises on his arm, and tears started to fall.
Hearing that, my heart melted instantly. I turned around and hugged him and the confused Saki tightly.
"Mom will never hate you." I cried, both scared and heartbroken. "You two are the most precious things in my life. I'm just terrified of losing you!
"Lucas, what would I do if something really bad happened to you this time?"
"I'm sorry, Mom. I really know I was wrong this time. I won't run around anymore. I even thought I wouldn't see you again. I promise I'll stay by your side from now on and won't go anywhere!" Lucas hugged me tightly, finally breaking down in fear.
"Mom, don't be mad. I won't help Lucas cover up and lie to you anymore. I'll help you keep an eye on him and make sure he doesn't run around!" Saki, not fully getting the situation, started to cry too when she saw us crying.
Hearing this, I let go of them and gently wiped the tears from their faces.
"Then I promise you, no matter what happens, our family will always be happy together!" I said, extending my two pinky fingers.
Seeing this, Lucas and Saki quickly hooked their pinky fingers with mine and laughed cheerfully.
Looking at their adorable faces, the gloom in my heart lifted, and I finally smiled again.
"By the way, Mom!" Lucas suddenly remembered something, his expression changing as he leaned in mysteriously. "I almost forgot. Do you remember the woman who was with Silas that day?"
Hearing this, I nodded, puzzled as to why Lucas would suddenly bring her up.
He continued, "She's a real bad person. She conspired with that thug to kidnap us. I heard her say it myself in the trunk!
"And she killed that thug to shut him up. From what I heard, she was targeting me, not Alex!"
"Targeting you?" I was slightly shocked.
At first, I thought it was all about Silas. I mean, being the Werewolf King, he's bound to have a ton of enemies. But nope, that woman was gunning for Lucas.
If someone's targeting Lucas, it was gotta be about me. But we just got back from abroad and haven't ticked anyone off. Who the heck would want to mess with us?
Could it be them?
Memories from five years ago came flooding back.
In this city, my only enemies were them. Could they had found out I didn't die and then wanted to finish the job, even going after my kids?
Thinking about it, the old hatred I buried deep inside flared up again.
If it was really them, they would definitely come after me once they know I was alive. What if they hurted my kids again? I couldn't let that happen.
A wave of unease hit me hard. We had just got back, and I was pretty much on my own here. It was too soon to think about taking them on. What should I do to I keep us safe?
Suddenly, Silas's handsome face popped into my mind.
But I quickly shook it off.
Sure, he got power, but we were not exactly buddies. He got no reason to help me. Plus, his kid got dragged into this because of mine. It was a miracle if he didn't blame us.
And that woman seemed super close to Silas. He might not even believe me.
It looked like I needed to dig into that woman first. Hopefully, I'm just being paranoid.
So, I decided to thank Silas first and then snoop around about that woman and see where he stands with her.
Silas's Perspective:
"Mr. Everhart, Alex still refuses to see Cecilia. He gets all worked up whenever she's mentioned," Butler reported to me in the study, looking pretty helpless.
"Forget it," I said, waving him off, feeling just as helpless.
Logically, Cecilia saved Alex, so he should be nicer to her. But nope, he's even more against her now. To avoid setting him off, I gotta go along with it for now.
"In my opinion, it's still your fault," Ray chimed in, looking exasperated. "I'm not a big fan of Cecilia either, but what she did this time really changed my mind about her."
"As a dad, you need to help Alex get along with Cecilia. You should treat her better too. No stepmom would risk her life for her stepson.
"Even if she doesn't fit our family's status, at least she's genuine with Alex."
"I know, so I haven't stopped her from staying at our place lately. When Alex upsets her and she cries to me, I give her plenty of jewelry to make up for it. Isn't that enough?" I said, feeling lost.
"That's not enough!" Ray glared at me. "You need to make her your fiancée again."
Hearing that, I opened my mouth but didn't say anything, stuck in a tough spot.
Cecilia's actions this time did make me see her differently, but Stella...
"It's up to you. Think it through. As the Alpha King, you need to know what's most important." Ray saw my hesitation, gave me a look, and stood up to leave. "The weather's nice today. I'm taking Alex to the amusement park."
"I'll have people protect you in the shadows," I said softly to Ray's retreating figure.
I sighed heavily and pinched the bridge of my nose in exhaustion until he disappeared around the corner.
"Sir." Butler walked over and knocked on the door. "Stella is here."
