Chapter 36 I Will Save Our Kids
Silas's POV:
Staring at the heartbroken woman in front of me, I was totally stumped.
Maybe I really got it all wrong, and this was just some messed-up coincidence.
I felt like a jerk for almost choking her without getting the facts straight, and yeah, I felt kinda guilty.
From the surveillance footage, it was clear her kid got dragged into this mess. Those two goons were clearly after Alex.
Was it for cash? Or something else?
I couldn't figure it out 'cause both seemed possible.
As the Alpha King, I'm respected by all werewolves, but I also attract a ton of jealousy and schemes. Getting to where I am now meant stepping over a lot of bodies and blood.
So, naturally, I've got enemies everywhere. If it was just for money, I'd hand over all my treasures to keep Alex safe.
But if it was for revenge, even if I begged, it might not make a difference.
Thinking about it made my mood even darker.
The woman kneeling on the ground was still crying her eyes out. I felt a pang of sympathy and squatted down to hand her a handkerchief.
"Sorry, I messed up. Your son got caught up in this. He's a brave kid. Thanks for saving my son. I'm proud of him," I said.
"Proud of him?" Stella snapped at my words. She suddenly looked up, her tear-streaked face full of anger.
"That's my son! He saved your kid and ended up in danger, and you almost strangled his mom!" Stella yelled at me, furious.
"Sorry," I said, lowering my head, feeling guilty. "Please forgive my earlier recklessness. I was just freaking out 'cause my son was missing."
"Your son's missing, and you're freaking out? What about me? What about my son?" Stella's emotions were all over the place.
Right now, she didn't care about our status difference. She was just a mom, grabbing my collar and crying for her son.
Seeing this, I couldn't help but feel moved.
If Alex's real mom had been as strong and caring as her, maybe Alex wouldn't have autism or be mocked.
Harris, standing nearby, wanted to step in, but I signaled him to back off.
Even as the Wolf King, I should take what I deserve.
I gently held Stella's hand, wiped her tears with the handkerchief, and solemnly promised her, "Stella, I swear to you as the Wolf King. I'll bring your son back safe. I'll do whatever it takes to rescue our kids!"
Hearing this, Stella started to calm down. She leaned against my chest, crying softly. "Please! Make sure Lucas comes back safe. I can't lose him again."
Looking at Stella's beautiful but tear-streaked face, my tough exterior started to crack. I gently patted her trembling, thin shoulders, trying to comfort her silently.
Lucas's POV:
The two thugs dragged us to some abandoned construction site and dumped us on the ground.
The hard concrete floor hurt like hell, but I didn't dare make a sound.
"Watch these two kids. Don't let 'em pull any tricks," one thug said to his buddies before they left, probably to patch themselves up.
"What's so special about these two little wolf cubs? Tie 'em up and let 'em cry when they wake up. Don't bother with 'em!" The thugs didn't take Alex and me seriously. After tying our hands and feet, they went outside to drink.
After a while, once I was sure they were gone, I dared to open my eyes. Alex was still out cold. I glanced at the door, saw they weren't paying attention, and quickly wriggled over to bump into Alex.
After a few bumps, Alex slowly opened his eyes.
Seeing himself in some sketchy place, he was about to scream. I quickly stopped him, shaking my head like crazy to signal him to stay quiet.
Werewolves had super sharp hearing and could easily hear us.
Alex got the message and quickly shut his mouth.
I lay on the ground, moving my body to use my mouth to bite the rope on Alex's hands.
After what felt like forever, my mouth was almost out of strength, but I finally got the rope off his hands. Alex then quickly helped untie mine.
Once free, I pulled Alex to a corner, nervously glancing outside, scared they'd find us.
Confirming it was safe for now, I took Alex's hand and wrote in his palm: [There are three kidnappers, one at the door. We're in an abandoned factory in the northwest of the city, about an hour's drive.] Alex's POV:
I couldn't believe my eyes as I looked at Lucas. He was so calm, analyzing the situation while I was scared out of my mind.
I knew Lucas was smart, but I never expected him to be this smart, staying calm and making decisions in a life-or-death situation.
I had been out cold for so long and knew nothing, yet he managed to stay calm so quickly, even figuring out the time and direction while in the same car as the kidnappers.
What kind of willpower does that take?
If I were him, I probably couldn't do it no matter what. Lucas is truly amazing.
I looked at Lucas with pure admiration in my eyes.
