Chapter 63 A Bet with Mr. Lavato

He eyed Monica ruthlessly with confusion and disgust, even mixed with some disappointment if you looked closer.
Monica paid no attention to how they saw her, but had her chin rest on her arm casually, twisting a pan in her hand.
Ms. Hanna walked in for the class. She didn't look happy with pale countenance, and never looked at Monica's direction.
After the class, she called Monica and Max into her office. She told Max to get good preparation for the contest in order to get an award back like before, and then she turned to Monica, signed slightly.
'Monica, I believe you were capable so that I sent you to the contest. But I heard from Mr. Beato that you scored zero at the casual test. Can you explain what happened?"
Monica knew Ms. Hanna wanted to talk about the contest with both of them. She looked up to Ms. Hanna and was about to speak, she heard a cynical voice behind.
'Ah, Ms. Hanna, isn't this the mathematics genius who scored just zero from your class? So, you wanted to have a word with her?"
It was Mr. Lavato. He lingered his way towards them with a thermometer in his hand, apparently gloating in his voice.
'I wonder if you have nobody else? You sent them to attend the contest, but one got the third position counting backwards, and the other one was even more out of line, she scored zero. What a new surprise to me! I wonder why they still haven't quit the contest. What do they have in their minds?"
But the students he sent from his class ranked No. 1 and No. 2. Certainly, the champion belonged to his class!
When he thought about it, he couldn't hide his contempt at Ms. Hanna.
Ms. Hanna was also displeased at his words, 'I saw how good both Monica and Max were with my own eyes. You shouldn't jump to the conclusion just based on one-time score to despise them!"
Mr. Lavato was surprised that Ms. Hanna could be confrontational instead of her usual way of biting the bullet, so that he sneered, 'Ms. Hanna, you'd better figure it out fast that if these two from your class are to be proved to be poor academically, the humiliation is not just on you, but on our school!"
Ms. Hanna was mutinous and wanted to say something, but Monica started first at Mr. Lavato's words. She turned to Ms. Hanna, 'Ms. Hanna, I want to withdraw."
After hearing what she said, Mr. Lavato laughed with his little eyes more invisible behind the glasses, 'Obviously, Monica knew better about herself and didn't want to make troubles for our school, so that she volunteered to quit."
But Ms. Hanna felt wronged beyond description when she heard Monica decided to quit so fast. But thinking that she scored zero, it proved that she probably couldn't catch up, it would be too far-fetched for her.
Ms. Hanna collected herself to speak, 'Monica, if it's too difficult for you, it is okay to quit."
Monica smiled faintly, eyes on Ms. Hanna, 'No, Ms. Hanna, the reason I quit is because it is too simple. I want to face more difficult challenge."
Her words not only made both teachers stunned, but also Max who was standing nearby.
Immediately, an indescribable anger took him over.
Monica, such a liar, started to talk big again!
Last time she said it was too simple and then scored zero at the test!
Max eyed Monica furiously, but Monica didn't care at all.
Mr. Lavato sneered, 'Don't pull my leg! Young? You think it is too simple?"
Ms. Hanna looked at Monica and thought Monica crossed the line to say it was too simple, but after she heard what Mr. Lavato said, she spoke, 'I believe Monica is capable!"
Monica raised her eyebrows as she never thought Ms. Hanna believed her like that. She turned to Mr. Lavato, spoke calmly, 'Mr. Lavato, do you dare to bet on it?"
Mr. Lavato looked at her in contempt, 'What bet?"
Monica knocked the table slight, smiling, 'Bet on this contest that Ms. Hanna's class will win, not yours!"
Mr. Lavato almost burst into laughter and agreed immediately, eyeing the little girl who had an exaggerated opinion of her abilities.
'Deal. Bet is a bet. What is the stake?"
Monica spoke coldly, 'If I lose, I will never attend this contest anymore. If you lose, you must apologize to Ms. Hanna in front of all students in the square at school to admit that she is the best teacher of Grade 11!"
Mr. Lavato wasn't happy about it but thinking that Monica would never win, he agreed without hesitation.
'Okay, Monica. I admire your courage!"
Then he walked out, laughing loud as if he won the bet already.
Upon his leaving, Ms. Hanna was concerned while looking at Monica. It seemed that she wanted to say something.
Monica, on the other hand, looked like nothing happened, and spoke, 'Ms. Hanna, is there anything that you asked me over?"
It made Ms. Hanna remember that she wanted to talk about her zero incident, but it wasn't important any more. She hurried to say, 'Monica, are you confident about this contest?"
Ms. Hanna didn't know what hope she had still on Monica since she score zero at a minor test. Let alone to say, how could she win at the contest.
'Forget it, you don't explain it to me. You two can leave. You should discuss more about the questions in the contest when you have time."
Monica knew what she wanted to say just by a glance at her expression, but she didn't want to make too much explanation too.
As soon as they left the office, Max exploded.
He looked at Monica coldly, 'What a liar! You said those questions were too simple. If they were too simple, how come you scored only zero? What's more, why did you bet with Mr. Lavato? Didn't you know that you turn my plan upside down? You leave me no other choice but to win!"
