The confession
Chapter fifty-three
Henry
I move my head towards her quickly, in an attempt to kiss her. She suddenly looks up at me, her big eyes studying me.
I stop moving and watch instead. Should I continue or not?
Gosh! I must be going insane. I pull back immediately, mentally hitting myself on the head. This lady isn't my wife. She's Jayde and not Hattie.
God, why can't my head recognize that?
Why do I keep getting close to her? Well, I'm a man, aren't I?
"I will wait in the car," I say without looking at her.
It was when she open the door that I turn to look at her and I watch her walk inside the company.
My heart races briefly. I'm still unable to recognize what I'm feeling. It's so blurry and unexplainable.
Gosh! I feel so damn!
I should get some snacks to eat. I pick up my phone and call a nearby restaurant.
"Yes, hello. Can you please place your order?"
" I want a lobster roll and a cronut. Then something very chilled."
I should get something for Jayde too.
" Make it two lobster rolls and two cronuts. You can add ice cream."
" Alright, can you please text your address?"
" I will now," I say and the phone went off.
I quickly text the address of the company to them.
If I want to find Hattie through Beatrice, Weston's girlfriend-to-be, then I will have to tell her the truth. I don't want to do that. I don't want anyone to know about the secret.
But what about now that Declan is aware of it?
Should I be a bit snappy about it?
Yes, and to do that, I will have to start with the Everett. I should probably start with Beatrice Everett and Hattie's best friend.
But if I do that, won't that mean Jayde will know about it.
No, she won't. I know a way to go about it. Yes, I will do it so that Jayde will continue to be Hattie pending the time she's back.
My phone beeped suddenly and it was a message from the restaurant I ordered from. I message them the name and the color of my car.
I look up at a guy on a power bike. He looks into the phone in his hand and suddenly looks up at my car.
He keeps his phone and move closer to me.
I open my door and collect my order. Then, I pay him.
Minutes later, Jayde walks out. She enters the car and looks at me, "What are you eating?"
I swallow on the cronut in my mouth. I reach out to the back seat for another bag. I get hold of it and drop it on Jayde's lap.
"That's yours."
"Aww," she smiles and opens the bag, "It looks yummy!" She whoops in delight. I'm forced to stop eating and focus on looking at her.
She carefully brings out the lobster rolls and chews, a smile at the corner of her mouth.
I try to compare her with Hattie. Aside from their facial resemblance, they seem so different.
Jayde is gentle and calm and intriguing and funny and humble.
While Hattie is proud, rough, and arrogant. Imagine her telling me I would have no choice but to love her. She seemed so certain of herself then.
I don't ever believe I can even fall in love with her.
But with Jayde, I seem to think differently. Though, I know nothing can come up between us too because she's Jayde.
The secret will be exposed soon especially when Hattie is back and Jayde will have to return to where she came from.
But somehow, I can't seem to be able to agree with my head. I don't know why it seems so difficult for me.
It seems so difficult to getaway. I don't know what I'm getting into but it's something really bad. It's something I'm scared of.
Yes, I'm scared of falling in love with this woman. The woman that isn't mine, and can never be mine. The woman I can never have.
The thought of it makes my heart squeeze so hard.
I look away and finish up with my food.
Jayde's phone rings suddenly. I turn to look at her, quickly looking at the screen before she picks up and eases it to her ear.
My heart skip a beat. It's Declan.
"Hello," she smiles, "Yes but can it be later?" She sighs and looks away.
I can't hear what Declan is saying but with Jayde's expression, you will know it's not something that good.
"Alright, I will be there soon!" She finishes and hang up. She turns to look at me again, " I need to get somewhere."
"Where?" I say quickly.
She drops the food I got for her, " I will see you at home later," she says hurriedly and open the door.
For someone that likes Declan, she seems too eager.
But I can't stop thinking something is wrong somewhere.
Gosh, why do I feel like a ram off to slaughter? I don't believe Jayde chose Declan over me.
I watch her for a while. The moment the enter a cab, I start the engine of my car and follow after her.
I'm going to see what all this is all about. It doesn't matter if she's Jayde or not but at this moment, she's my wife.
The moment the car took a right turn, I knew instantly that Jayde was going to Declan's house. How can a married woman go to a guy's house?
What if someone sees her?
And what effrontery does Declan have? Calling my wife over to his place. I wonder if he has been doing it all this while. He's so full of disrespect.
I seriously can't believe this.
But do they love each other?
It doesn't matter. Declan should have let her leave before he starts ordering her around.
Wait, or does he want to threaten her? Well, it's something he's capable of doing. He's always threatening.
I won't take it easy with him if that is the case.
I give her space so she wouldn't feel tailed.
I pull to a stop in front of Declan's house after I'm sure Jayde went in.
I get down and advance towards his door. I press the bell button and the door opens.
I walk inside and wave a hand at the security man. The guy made to follow me but sensing my expression, he stepped back.
Seriously, I feel so annoyed right this moment.
"What do you think you are doing?" I hear Declan's angry voice. I stop for a moment and decide to listen to them.
"Why can't you tell him? Don't you want to go back to your life?" Declan says, his voice going high and low with frustration.
There was a moment of silence.
"I couldn't," Jayde says softly, "I can't bring myself to tell Henry."
"What? Why?"
" Hattie is in the hospital."
My heart made a stud, hospital? Wait for what! Why? What could have happened to her?
"And Henry's father blames him for my disappearance and I don't want that."
What? She's worried about me? That was why she refused to leave?
Actually, that confession makes me feel good. I decide to eavesdrop more.
"You don't seem to understand the complexity of this situation. If Hattie comes out, you might be in trouble."
" Mr. Everett assured me that I will be alright. Please, I want you to stop this. What will people say if they see me walk in here?"
Declan scoffs, 'Then I will tell them who you really are. I will let them know you are Jayde!" He screams at her.
" Why does this matter to you!" Jayde's voice matches with his. She seems so angry now. I've never really heard her this way.
"Because I don't want you to get hurt!" He whispers that I barely hear him.
I let out a sigh. Declan must really love her.
"Please, don't be," Jayde says, "I can handle my problem by myself."
"No Jayde, I won't let this go! Why can't you just do this! Why do you keep protecting Henry? Why can't you mind your business?"
I hold the knob to open the door. I think it's high time I enter. They've heard enough of the conversation. It's time to take my wife home.
"I can't do that! I don't want to see Henry get hurt! I love him!" Jayde's outburst made me motionless.
I couldn't open the door, it seems like my heart stopped for a moment.
What? Does she love me?
"You love him?" Declan asks, also amazed at the confession.
"Yes," Jayde whispered, "I love him with everything that mine."
Declan made a rumbling sound, " Are you letting it get into your head? Hattie is Henry's wife. You are just beside him because she's not here. The moment she comes back, you will be gone. Henry won't even know you are gone. I'm sure he won't be able to differentiate between you and Hattie."
" It doesn't matter," Jayde says amidst sobs, " I love him and that's all that matters."
