Lesson 100- Always remember to turn off the tap. It’s not good to leave the water running, you might slip!
Carefully reaching over the water, I open my door only to find the hallway is flooded and an inch deep in water. Damnit! There must be a burst pipe or something. I don’t know how else it could have flooded so quickly. I reach down and yank my socks off my feet, flinging them onto my bed. I might have to go investigate, but that doesn’t mean I have to walk around in wet socks. Yuck! I carefully step through the water, heading to the bathroom. I figure it’s the most likely place to have a burst pipe or something, it doesn’t look like the water has reached the kitchen yet so I know it isn’t coming from there. I push the bathroom door open, but it’s immediately clear to me that the water isn’t coming from there. I close the door, hoping to limit the spread of the water a little bit at least. I would go turn off the water at the mains or something, but I suspect they’re outside so I couldn’t get to them anyway. I REALLY hope that I can fix whatever this is because if not, it’s going to be a very long, very uncomfortable day. I head down the hall, the only place it could be coming from is the bar. What on earth is leaking out there? I guess there’s a little tap, but there is a lot of water and it happened so fast. Maybe some huge pipe burst on the street or something and the whole area is flooded? I carefully push the door to the bar open and step inside, but before I can so much as blink, someone grabs my arm and yanks hard, pulling me off balance.
I shriek and fight, but the grip on my arm is like iron, completely unmovable. I turn to see a guy trying to drag me towards the door. What stands out about this guy is that he’s very different to the ones who tried to take me previously. Mostly because he doesn’t actually look scary. If I had seem him on the street before all of this happened, I would probably have thought he was cute. He’s the kind of guy that girls swoon over and guys envy. He has golden blonde hair that has just the slightest hint of wave in it that falls over his face a little and the bluest eyes I’ve ever seen. His general attractiveness is ruined however by the bite of his fingers where they dig into my arm and the way he yanks me forward.
“Let GO!” I fight against him but he remains unmoved.
“Sorry, you need to come with me.” He answers flatly. I continue to struggle but it’s getting me nowhere.
“JANE! JANE HELP ME!” I call out, pleading for her to rescue me again. The guy grimaces.
“Yeah, that won’t get you anywhere.” He says bluntly. I look for Jane and realise that the water flooding the place is centred around her trap door. Is… Is it flooded down there? Will Jane be okay? What if she drowns? CAN she drown? I launch myself towards it, only to be yanked back by the guy.
“JANE!” I scream, panicking. The guy rolls his eyes.
“Your monster is fine. I just can’t have you hiding down there, and I don’t particularly want to fight whatever that is. The water will stop the door from opening.” He explains calmly. WHY IS THIS GUY SO CALM? I’m freaking out and somehow the fact that he’s so relaxed is making everything a WHOLE lot worse. I continue trying to get away from him and he sighs.
“You know, this would go a lot easier if you would stop fighting. I’m not going to hurt you. It’s just my job to transport you.” He explains. I scoff at him incredulously.
“Are you kidding? You’re trying to KIDNAP me!” I yell. He shrugs. SHRUGS.
“Well yeah, but aren’t you already a prisoner here? I’m just moving you from one captor to another. I’m not sure why you’re so upset.” He answers and I stare.
“What? I’m not a prisoner… Not really…” I ignore the small part of me that is insisting I AM a prisoner. Now is not the time to go into the details.
“I’ll probably die if you take me out of here. There’s a binding spell.” I tell him hurriedly. If he really isn’t trying to do me any serious harm then surely he won’t risk trying to take me outside. He narrows his eyes suspiciously.
“Surely not. Binding spells are powerful, but the demon only has the one witch enslaved to him. Surely one witch couldn’t do that powerful a spell.” He reasons. I choke back panicked tears as we get closer to the door. I know it’s designed to keep people out, but I have no idea if he will be able to open the door to get out. I know I should keep fighting, but for some reason my brain is caught on one part of his statement.
“Torin doesn’t have any slaves.” I comment defensively. Why am I even worrying about that right now? The guy seems sceptical.
“All demons keep slaves, even if they don’t use the word. They use their contracts and twist things around until people are all caught up and have no choice but to serve them.” he practically spits the words.
“What? That’s not true. Even if it was, I can promise you that Laura, the witch who works here has never signed any contract.” Desperate, I keep talking. Hoping to distract the guy. It seems to be working because he looks curious.
“Really? That seems strange…” He trails off thoughtfully. I feel his grip loosen a little and I take my chance. I shove against him, trying to push him back. I push him so hard that he falls over. I prepare to run, but his grip on my arm doesn’t loosen and I get pulled down with him. What the hell? He isn’t even holding on. Is his hand glued to me or something? Why can’t I get away? The water in here comes up to mid calf on me so I have to fight to not be pulled down to the floor, I don’t want my head to be submerged by accident. My heart is racing with fear. I can’t escape this guy, he’s clearly much stronger than me. There’s no way I’m going to be able to get away from him. Jane is trapped and can’t help me either. He’s going to force me to leave the bar and the binding spell will probably kill me, or at least put me through enough pain that I’ll WISH I was dead. I put one foot outside one time and it was the most painful experience of my life. I REALLY don’t want to experience that again.
All of a sudden, the door behind the door comes flying open and Torin bolts inside. He looks terrified.
“LET GO OF HER!” He yells angrily. The guy flinches, but instead of letting go, he pulls me around so I’m standing in front of him. Torin was advancing towards us and he stops in place.
“Don’t you dare come any closer.” The guy warns. Torin is glowering at him. This time when he speaks, he doesn’t yell, but his tone is just as threatening.
“I told you to let. Go. Of. Her.” He says slowly. The guy laughs from behind me.
“Hell no, you don’t scare me.” He SAYS he isn’t scared, and if it weren’t for the fact that he is standing so close to me, I would believe it. But I can feel his heart racing and his breathing isn’t nearly as steady as he’s pretending. I don’t know who this guy is, I don’t know how he got in here and I definitely don’t know how he’s flooding the place. But I DO know that he is absolutely, definitely, one hundred percent, scared or Torin.
