Lesson 119- Sometimes the best thing you can do is stop talking and listen.

Tonight is my night off, but I still wake up fairly early because my brother calls to check in on me. I’m very sleepy when I answer him because after we hung up this morning, I spent another hour or two shopping on Amazon. I spent a lot of money, and Torin is probably expecting a ton of packages now. I should probably warn him about that… After I get off the phone with Damien, I shoot Torin a text warning him that I went on an online shopping binge and to be prepared for a huge amount of deliveries. I stumble to the kitchen, feed Crash and then make myself a cup of tea because I’m just dying for some caffeine. I get a text from Laura.

Laura- Hey… So I wanted to ask a favour…

Rina- Yeah?

Laura- Can you convince Torin to give me the night off? I was hoping for a girls night.

Rina- ??? Just ask him yourself. I’m sure he won’t mind. Either Catcher can work alone or Tori can help him out.

Laura- I’d rather if you asked for me…

Rina- I think you’re being dramatic.

Laura- … Please?

Rina- Fine.
I send Torin another text.

Rina- Hey Tori, Laura wants me to ask you if she can take tonight off. She wants a girls night. No idea why. Catcher should be coming in and if it gets busy we can still help out.

Tori- Tell her she can take the night off. I doubt it will be busy tonight, Catcher should be fine and I can cover for her if needed.

Rina- Thanks Tori!!! :) <3

Tori- :)

I confirm with Laura that she has the night off and she promises to be over in a couple of hours to start our girls night. She also promises to bring take-out. Unsurprisingly, Torin beats her here. He knocks on my door.
“Yeah?” I call out. He walks in and pauses by my bed where I’m sitting.
“If you give me your phone and tablet, I’ll connect you to the internet here so you don’t have to use your phone wifi.” He offers. I smile.
“Awesome, thanks.” I hand them over and he gets them connected. I suddenly realise this means I can actually watch movies and stuff online again and I am absolutely pumped. It’s actually concerning how many things I rely on my phone and internet for.

Laura and Kyle arrive an hour or so later. I let them in and Laura immediately grabs me and drags me by the arm to my room. Behind us, I can hear Kyle grumbling about her picking up shoddy takeout when he is cooking a perfectly good meal. He’s right about one thing, I have been eating better in this past month than I’ve eaten in my entire life. Still, sometimes a girl just needs junk food, and apparently for Laura that time is right now. She basically shoves me into my room and slams the door behind us.
“Woah, what’s the rush?” I ask, a little concerned.
“I need to talk to you.” She starts pacing the room. I wait for her to say something else, but she just keeps moving.
“Laura? What did you need to talk to me about?” I say gently, trying to calm her down. She circles the room about five more times before suddenly stopping and whirling to face me.
“I think I might like Kyle!” She blurts it out in one breath, a sort of shouted whisper. Like she WANTED to say it quietly, but lost control and just ended up shouting. The end result is basically like if she said it at a normal volume. I have to fight the urge to grin and clap my hands together in glee. Either way, I definitely crack a smile.
“Oh, really?” I say vaguely. She nods, not noticing my entertained expression.
“Yeah, I didn’t see it coming, but staying with him the last few days… I don’t know, I’ve been seeing him kind of differently?” She starts pacing the room again.
“I was thinking I want to ask him out, but then I thought that was a stupid idea, because we work together and it would be SUPER awkward if he said no PLUS I’m staying at his house so if everything goes wrong I can’t even hide and cry it out or anything.” She says this with complete exasperation. I open my mouth to say something, I’m not sure exactly what, but something reassuring. Maybe I’ll hint that there is no way on this planet that Kyle would say no if she were to ask him out. But I don’t get the chance because Laura just keeps going.
“But then I was thinking that maybe it doesn’t matter so much, the work thing. It’s not like we work in the same area. He stays in the kitchen and I’m out in the bar. If things were awkward I could probably avoid him pretty well at work. I figure you and Catch would help out and play the go between if needed. So that’s not really an actual issue. But then there’s the whole staying at his place thing. But I’ve been working it out and I should have all the stuff I need to figure out the proper wards for my house by the end of the week. Then I can make it safe for me to stay there again. I thought maybe after that I could ask him out. What do you think?” She turns to face me again. I once again open my mouth to answer, but Laura interrupts me again.
“Because I think it could work. I thought that maybe when I’m leaving his house I could just casually say that I enjoyed spending extra time with him, and that maybe we should spend more time together outside of work. I was going to suggest we go to dinner or something, but he doesn’t like eating out or getting takeout. So then I thought maybe a movie, but that’s basically what we’ve been doing when we hang out at his place, so I changed my mind and did some research online. I found this theatre that has a performance in a couple of weeks of a musical. Did you know Kyle is really into musicals? Because I had no idea until recently. But I thought I might invite him to that. So what do you think? It’s a good idea right? I think it’s a good idea, but maybe it’s a stupid idea and I’m overthinking it. Is it a stupid idea?” She asks. I wait a moment, just in case she keeps going again but this time she just raises an eyebrow and stares at me, probably wondering why I’m taking so long to answer.
“It’s not a stupid idea.” I respond. She beams a smile.
“Great! I guess I’ll do that then. Probably. Unless I chicken out. Thanks for all your advice Rina. I feel way better.” She says with a relieved smile. I burst out laughing, although Laura seems confused by it. I guess she didn’t really need advice, she had already made her decision, she just needed someone to talk to.

I’m just screaming a mental HELL YEAH and planning to sneak off at some point to update Torin on the most recent drama when I realise my phone has been ringing. Shit, I missed a call from Damien. I swapped it onto silent when I was texting earlier because no one enjoys hearing their phone go off every two seconds. I’m about to call him back when a string of texts from him come through.

Damien- Why aren’t you answering your phone???

Damien- I need to talk to you.

Damien- I know where you are.
