Lesson 135- Try to find ways to laugh together rather than at each other.

It isn’t until about five minutes after everyone leaves that I remember I was planning to have Torin ask Laura about the binding spell. I want to strike while the iron is hot. I get the feeling if I give him an excuse to delay, he will take it. Still, I don’t want to call Laura back when she’s just left. So I suppose one more night won’t hurt. It’s probably not the best idea to totally overwhelm my brother with more magic stuff right now anyway. He’s already a little worse for wear and as well as he’s taking this, he is definitely a bit on edge. He needs to rest. Under the eye that isn’t all bruised, he has shadows and he looks pale.
“Let’s all eat and then you need to go to bed Dami.” I instruct him. He sighs.
“Fine, fine. Are we ordering in or something?” He asks and I grin.
“Nope. Kyle would have cooked for the bar tonight and we didn’t open. There will be PLENTY of food in the kitchen. He will have to forgive me for messing with his kitchen again.” Damien frowns.
“Doesn’t Torin own this place?” He asks. I nod but Torin is the one who answers.
“Only on paper.” He grumbles and I burst out laughing.
“Kyle rules the kitchen with an iron fist. This might be Tori’s territory, but Kyle is lord of the kitchen and we all know it.” I explain, leading Damien behind the bar. He reaches to open the door but Torin catches his wrist in a quick movement.
“Don’t.” He warns before releasing him. Damien frowns but I pat his arm reassuringly.
“Sorry, I forgot to warn you. There’s a security type spell on this door too. It’ll hurt you if you touch it. Only employees here can open it. I don’t recommend touching the doors leading outside either. Only Tori and I can open those. I wouldn’t advise trying.” I open the door and gesture for him to go through.
“Come on, I’ll show you around. The doors in this hallway are safe, although you should stay out of Torin’s office unless he invites you in, okay?” I say cheerfully. Damien agrees and I see Torin relax a little. I’m sure he isn’t loving suddenly having a near stranger in his territory, even if it is my brother. I show him my room and the bathroom, then we head straight to the kitchen. I was planning to search around in the fridge, but apparently I don’t need to because on the bench are three plates of food with covers over them and a handwritten note from Kyle.

*PLEASE DON’T COOK!
-Kyle*

I show Torin the note and burst out laughing. Damien chuckles away too.
“Is your cooking really that bad sis? I’ve had it before and I liked it well enough.” He comments. I shrug.
“You have low standards. Besides, Kyle’s cooking is way better than mine. I have no complaints with him feeding us. Eat up.” I uncover the meal and as promised, it’s delicious. We all eat standing around in the kitchen while Damien updates me on how things have been at work. He has the next couple days off and if he needs to take leave he should be able to. Unlike me who totally lost my job. Sigh. At least working here has been pretty fun, and it definitely pays better, even if Torin didn’t keep topping up my bank account for things he feels guilty about.

As much as Damien insists he’s fine, he is practically falling asleep into his dinner plate so I lead him back to my room and insist he goes to bed.
“I can’t.” He argues.
“Why not?” I demand.
“That’s YOUR bed. You need it!” He insists. I roll my eyes.
“Okay, for starters, that bed is more than big enough for us to share if we need to. And secondly, I work nights right now, remember? I’m not even close to ready for bed. I’ll hang out with Tori for a while and come sleep later.” I assure him. Damien grins.
“You’re gonna go hang out with TORI are you? You know, your friends out there had an awful lot to say about you and TORI. Did you know they have a whole betting pool going? There’s an entire list. It’s not just your coworkers on it either. Some guy named Jackson was on the list too, plus a few others. I don’t remember all the names… But did you know there are at least four people on that list who are convinced you’ll be married by the end of the year?” He comments. I choke.
“What?!” I demand. He just grins and keeps on going.
“Yeah, I’m just saying I like the guy well enough, but I definitely need to get to know him better if he’s going to be marrying my baby sister.” He teases. I groan. I am going to kill Laura and that stupid list. It sounds like half the bar regulars are in on it. I have an almost sick curiosity about what else is on their list of bets. Plus seriously, marriage? Who on earth thinks I’ll be getting MARRIED in the next few months? And WHY? Still, if my brother is going to be all nosy, I guess this is my chance to do the same.
“Yeah well, alcohol and people with nothing better to gossip about results in some crazy stories. But what about you? Have you been seeing anyone lately?” I try to ask casually as I straighten up the bed for him. Damien shakes his head.
“Nah, I’ve been too busy trying to track YOU down.” He points out and I cringe.
“Sorry about that. You can see now why I couldn’t really say anything, right?” I confirm and Damien nods.
“Yeah, I get it. I’m not happy about it. But I get it.” He says with a sigh and I smile with relief.
“Good. So no girlfriend then?” I confirm. He rolls his eyes.
“No girlfriend.” He agrees.
“And no boyfriends?” I say teasingly. He laughs.
“No boyfriends either.” He messes with my hair before sitting on the bed. Hmm, well he didn’t seem HORRIFIED at my suggestion. But then again, he’s a nice person. I doubt he would seem upset by that kind of idea. It still doesn’t tell me if he might be interested in guys or not. Trying to get information for Eli is harder than I thought. Not to mention I’m still not sure about how I would feel if Damien DID start seeing Eli. I mean, at least the issue of him not knowing about magic isn’t a problem anymore. But that doesn’t mean it wouldn’t be complicated. There are a million other things that could go wrong. Then again, isn’t that true about any relationship? I guess ultimately, it isn’t really any of my business. It’s between Eli and my brother. Still, it’s a strange thought to me.
“You’re quiet all of a sudden.” Damien comments and I jump.
“Huh? Sorry, I was just thinking. Don’t worry about it. You need to get some rest, you’ve been all beat up and to be honest, I’m pretty sure you’re gonna feel worse tomorrow.” I point out. Damien groans.
“Yeah probably. I’ll behave and try to sleep it off a bit. Don’t stay up too late with your not boyfriend.” He winks and me and I roll my eyes.
“Good night Damien.” I leave the room, turning the light off and shutting the door behind me. Then I go look for Torin.
