CHAPTER 44

CHAPTER FORTY FOUR
“We have been at this for an hour and all there seems to be about my family is just some old photographs of when we were babies and a few snaps when my family was at charity events, “I snapped, looking up from the cluster of old newspapers sprawled before me. The librarian, a middle aged woman wearing a pair glasses that looked a bit too big for her tiny face, shot me a warning look.

“Sorry,” I mouthed.

Danny met my frustrated gaze, “It’s just been an hour. Don’t be too hard on yourself,”

“I shouldn’t be hard on myself? Apparently, I had a twin brother. Oh, I also happen to be some promised mate to an original hybrid and now my best friend is a hybrid too or something. Oh, did I forget to mention the part where I’m supposed to be dead,” I snapped but then paused, taking a deep breath,” I’m sorry,”

“No. It’s okay. I could not be able to understand what you are going through right now but if there is one thing you can be sure is that, Collins would kill anyone to keep you happy,” he winked, a charming smile curling up his lips.

“Yeah, right,”

“I’m not kidding. Honestly, I didn’t think he’d move on that fast. That man had basically been worshipping Laila’s feet and she still went on ahead to cheat on him,’ he shook his head.

“What is wrong with her? Guys like Collins are the type that would make a woman want to cheat with, not cheat on,” It was my turn to shake my head. Collins was the perfect man candy with the right does of bad boy and good boy mixture. The type of guy you’d have to pinch yourself every morning when you wake up to his unbelievably good looking face just so you’d convince yourself that he was really yours. He was the type of man that made you wanna serve him breakfast in lingerie. Wait, I was not liking where my thoughts were straying to. I needed to remain focus and not get lost in Collin’s man beauty. Who could blame my ovaries though? He was a fucking man candy wrapped in delicious coating.

“Speaking of women, so your friend, huh? Not to sound creepy or anything but does she have a boyfriend?” he leaned closer.

“I don’t know. You could ask her once she has fully recovered. Though I’m not sure Trina is interested in settling just yet,” I played dumb, knowing too well he was asking about Sasha. Sasha had this thing about her that I had no idea how it worked but it drew guys to her like bees. She was surely a party girl and never really had time to settle down, yet every time she had a one night stand, that guy would end up literally trying to drill me and Trina about trying to find Sasha. Of course, they would end up disappointed when she made it clear on their face that it was just going to be a one night stand.

“Not Trina. I’m talking about your other friend. Sasha, is it?”

“I was just playing with you. If you really want to know her relationship status, why don’t you ask her? I mean, it’s not like we are living town any time soon taking the current turn of events,”

He sighed, leaning away,” Maybe I will,”

I pulled my attention back to the papers in front of me, reading impatiently through them and soon an article caught my attention. It was an article dating back to sixteen years ago, the day our house caught fire and I supposedly died alongside my twin brother.

“What did you find?” Danny questioned.

“Its an article dating back to the day I supposedly died,” I said, in a rather shaky voice, pushing it to him,” C-could you please read it for me?”

“Sure. So according to police reports, the fire was caused by an accidental gas leak. The chief police inspector, Ryan Dobbin, claimed the gas leak occurred under the house, resulting to the immediate death of two children, Adrian and Nadia Dela Fuente, both aged eight years old. He went on ahead to say it was pretty beyond explanation how the bodies of the two kids had not been blown completely to pieces. The family will gather to mourn for the untimely death of these two kids this Friday at the town’s cemetery,” he finished.

“I just…I don’t get it. If people saw me dead, why am I still alive? And I left this town when I was nine but I’m supposed to have died at eight years old,” I sigh in frustration. This was getting too complicated and just too much for me to handle. I was no damn cop. I was just a romance author whose only reason to come back here was find her parents’ killers and here I was instead, investigating my own strange life.

“How about we pay a visit to the station? I got a couple of old friends there but I think you need to do some change. It’s like there are a few people who knew you before, that are already piecing your familiar look together. We need to keep you less familiar,”

“You are right. I can’t keep on wearing your cape all day but I don’t think we need to visit the station,” I said, sighing.

“Why not?”

“Because, we already know who to ask,”

“I’m confused here,”

“We just need to find Ryan Dobbin and the reporter who covered the news of the incident. Now, we can do that later but now, I really need to change my look. I’m tired of people whispering and looking at me weirdly. First I’ll need to call Sasha, she speaks fashion better than anyone I know,” I fished out my phone.

“Here, you can use mine to call her,”

“Nice try,” I shook my head amused as I dialed Sasha’s number.
