Chapter 13
It turns out that I will be at the game. It's Friday evening, and I'm waiting for my pals to come with Mark at the metro station. To pass the time, we each have cups of coffee with us hands and are reciting items from our bucket lists that we plan to do someday. Daisy and Dag will be visiting over the weekend, and I'm looking forward to seeing them again. When everyone is there, we always have a good time. "Skydive." Mark says this as he takes a drink of his coffee and gives me a cheeky grin in his eyes. "Never!". When his latte nearly falls, I smack his arm, causing him to let out a feminine scream. "I'm not joking!"
"If you can't manage rollercoasters, what makes you think you'll be able to handle skydiving?" I snort unladylikely while checking my watch. "On my bucket list, rollercoasters come before skydiving." He rubs behind his neck and smiles sheepishly. "I guess I'll be OK falling from the sky once I get over that fear."
I sip almost all of my latte, giggling, before strolling towards the closest bin and tossing it in, then returning to the small nook we've taken up. The loudspeakers cut me off just as I opened my words, notifying the next arrival. I observe as Mark straightens his shirt and dusts off the doughnut crumbs. We stand on our tiptoes until the train comes to a complete stop before looking for our pals. Being short doesn't assist me in this situation. We soon recognize their faces and gesture them over. Daisy screams out a shriek and leaps at me, scaring me up in the process. Next, I greet Dag, and we have a pleasant conversation as we go to the car.
We arrive at our school in perfect time and immediately grab a seat in the fitness centre with our pals. The area is quickly filling up; chairs are being filled at a rapid rate, and people are descending the staircases with snacks and beverages in their hands. It's an open game, so everyone is welcome. Anyone who has heard about the forthcoming big game in the last month: parents, relatives, friends, and locals. When Mark ruffles my hair, I swat his hand away and he hands me my food and drink and sitting down beside Linda and Chris lower down. Before blinking and returning, turned to face the front, he puts his tongue outside at me.
"So, what's new? Ami , what's been going on?" Daisy inquires, referencing my nickname, before tossing a bit of popcorn that lands neatly on Mark's neck. I shrug as I chuckle and sipping my drink. "Not much has changed, this is the same old school plus homework." "Do you think you're doing okay?" Dag asks next, and I respond with a little smile and a nod.
I understand he's talking about my folks and living alone. The abduction that occurred last week is not mentioned. I had a long conversation with Gabriel, which demands answers and action. I was furious that I had been abducted and held captive in a cell, and I had been beaten for demanding answers, and I demanded that those men pay because of what they had done to me.
Gabriel told me that all those men were members of his community, but that he didn't really expect them to be harsh to anyone. He repeatedly promised me that he had handled the men by handing them in to the cops so I could file charges against them. When a cop came over last year just to take my statement and told me they were going away for a long time, William and Elizabeth got involved as well. The news has fully eased me, knowing that I have received retribution for what I have gone through, but I am aware that it will take quite some time for me to heal from what has occurred.
"I'm staying at your apartment because Chris and Linda make me want to puke." Daisy breaks the silence with an excessive flick of her eyes, jolting me from my reverie. "Amen, sister!" says the speaker. Mark screams, attracting the attention of the majority of the audience.
As Chris scoffs and Linda screams angrily, a fight breaks out between them about who is the most loved-up couple. Mark and I are the only ones who aren't in a relationship. What about Gabriel, for example? As a result, I'm choking on my drink. I wipe my lips using a handkerchief and shrug away the worried expressions. No way do Gabriel and I have a connection! I mean, a man with that face in a romantic relationship with someone like me? When pigs fly, that's exactly what will happen.
Sighing, I scan the gym for Indigo and wave him down with a grin when I see him. However, the guy next to him turns to face me, and the sight of a familiar face causes my breath to catch in my throat. Those familiar eyes, emerald green and sparkling like diamonds in the light, remain fixed on me. Gabriel returns my look with a small nod, as though noticing my presence. I reciprocate the nod, and he only smirks. He looks handsome like every other time I see him, oozing raw masculinity. Dressed in casual attire with dark jeans, a white shirt and sneakers, he looks totally at ease and blends right in.
I can hear girls talking about him and staring over with lust filled eyes, either fluffing their hair or pushing out their chests. Rolling my eyes at them, I turn back to face the front, a feeling of slight jealousy rising within me. But, why am I jealous? He isn't mine. He's as attractive as I've ever seen him, radiating raw masculinity. He appears perfectly at ease and mixes right in, dressed casually in black slacks, a white shirt, and sneakers. I can hear girls chatting about him and looking at him with lustful eyes, straightening their hair or shoving their chests out. I turned back to face front, a smidgeon of envy building inside me as I roll my eyes at them. But what makes me so envious? He isn't my child.
A high-pitched whistle signals the start of the game, with participants dispersing and the basketball is being passed about. As our school's great player makes a basket, the crowd erupts in applause, and the atmosphere of the game lifts everyone's spirits. We watch as the basketball is stolen by the opposing team, who, regrettably, makes a slam dunk, causing the entire area to boo. As baskets are gained and lost, the game becomes more intense. Everyone is here to appreciate a lovely game of sport, so the mood is tight yet energetic.
