Chapter 77

Mr. Alvaro says that a bus is ready to return us to the school so that it would be simpler for parents to pick us up when we arrive in the US. I've been sitting in the car with us for quite some time, and I'm beginning to grow restless. My butt had been numb after sitting for hours on end, only getting up for a potty break if we managed to stop somewhere before moving on again. I sigh in relief when the bus finally breaks into the parking lot of the school. I check to see whether Gabriel has already arrived to pick me up from the hotel, but his car is nowhere to be seen. I thank the bus driver and shrug as I grab my backpack and exit the vehicle. I then take my duffel bag out of the trunk. I deny Linda and Kelvin's offer to drive me home and say that Gabriel is already on his way to take me home. Theo whispers in my ear, keeping in mind the students surrounding us, that Gabriel is caught in traffic and I'll have to wait a little while longer. Kayla and Max give me a goodbye hug and say they'll see me tomorrow. I give him a quick nod of approval before watching him go for his car. If he wasn't driving someplace else, I would have gotten a lift with him back to the pack home.
After Mr. Alvaro entered the school and the pupils boarded the bus, Kaden and I were left on the bus alone. Our suitcases are scattered on the floor next to our feet as we rest against the school's wall. The calm breeze and overcast, gray skies provide a dramatic contrast to Rome's beautiful weather.
“You are allowed to go if you choose; my ride is just little late.” I grimace as I gaze up at Kaden as he takes out a cigarette. Knowing how I can't handle it, he smiles awkwardly before putting it back into the box.
"The Sensei never abandons its grasshoppers unprotected and alone."
I pull away from the wall and say, "Okay, listen here friend." I put my finger to his chest. "A ninja is never truly vulnerable or alone, as you describe it. If you don't have amazing combat skills, which I do, you can't call yourself a ninja."
I don't pay attention to the sound of a car driving in and parking because I assume it is a teacher or janitor. Instead, I pay attention to Kaden's suspicious gaze as he raises an eyebrow at me and pretends to have lint on his leather jacket. Though I am aware of his humor, I take this extremely seriously.
“You don't actually have the abilities associated with the title of ninja; you only call yourself one.”
He doesn't know about the innumerable brilliant practical jokes I have done, and my jaw drops at his charge. Before I can deliver a punch, he pulls me up and tosses me over his shoulder while giggling loudly as he spins us around. I screamed at him and charged at him.
I giggle and pat his back in response, asking him to disappoint me. As the world spins around me, he instead takes me down and holds me in his arms in bridal manner. When I start to feel queasy in my stomach, I squeal, grab his arm, and yell at him to stop. When a thunderous boom reverberates through the empty schoolyard, prompting us to pause and turn our heads in its direction, he has just helped me get up. Oh my god! When my eyes slam into crimson, enraged ones, I thought.
Gabriel.
Ryan and Paloma are holding him back as he partially transforms into a terrifying beast with long teeth and claws. His muscles are stretched and he is trembling violently. This is the angriest Gabriel has ever been, contrary to what I had previously believed. From the way he sneers at us, he seems ready to annihilate everything that stands in his way. When Kaden takes me behind his body and obscures my view from Gabriel's view, I scream in surprise, forcing me to cover my ears while the others just grimace like they've already heard it many times before.
I momentarily wonder where Mr. Alvaro went since, given Gabriel's volume, I would expect him to be racing outside at this very moment.
"Get out from my mate, rogue; she's mine!" Gabriel lets out a deep roar while shaking with wrath. In disbelief, I gasp and glance up at Kaden as he turns to give me the same face. Is he a criminal? Yet how? He does not roar like the others, nor do his eyes change color. None of the other wolves' actions are displayed by him.
“You're a werewolf, right?” His blue eyes still contain astonishment and amazement as he whisper-shouts.
"Whoa, no! I am a person."
“Tell me I really have not been hanging out with the King's mate, please. He grunts and furiously wipes his face with his hand.”
“It's unfortunate that you have.” I shakily answered.
“Please reassure me that you are not a renegade who wants to assassinate me in order to overthrow the stated King.”
“I find it hard to believe you just stated that.”
"I'm sorry, but you don't seem to be the one carrying a large bullseye on your back! Give me a break." I yell and tap his shoulder.
“Have I injured you?” He grimaces and crosses his arms menacingly as he looks down at me with steely eyes.
"No." I murmur, kick a stone with my shoes, and then let out a loud sigh.
"I apologize for making hasty judgments. You are correct." I look down, sheepishly.
As soon as I learned that he was a rogue, I automatically categorized him with the other rogues I had heard about from the men, never once considering the fact that he had been nothing but kind to me when we first met. He exhales a sigh of relief before informing me that everything is alright.
“Okay, pay close attention.” I glance up at him in surprise as he begins. "Because I do not intend to hurt you in any way—as your partner believes—and because he appears ready to pull off my head, I wouldn't want that to happen. You're my dear pal, and I want to keep you safe rather than immediately handing you up to the bad guys."
