Chapter 79
I heard the front door opened and slammed shut at seven o'clock in the evening. Knowing that he would go there first, I made the choice to wait outside of his office. Just as he turns the corner, I stumble to my feet and grasp the hem of my sweater while staring at him. He looks at me with lifeless eyes, as if I don't even exist.
"Please let's talk immediately." I beg, and when he opened the door wider to let me in, I feel relief wash over me. He stays standing and leans against his desk, and I sit down on one of the couches.
I see the clear decanter filled with what I assume to be whiskey and take a closer look. While distracted, he pours himself a glass but does not sip.
“Why did you not inform me of him?” The fact that he asks calmly concerns me a lot more than his fury does. I shrug as I glance at the blanket underneath.
"It was never raised."
"Amanda, Kaden Reid is a freaking rogue! You didn't think it necessary to inform me about him?"
He eventually loses it and slams his hand on the table, causing me to jump out of my skin in the process.
"I had no idea he was a bad guy!" As I look into his eyes, I scream in defense. green to gray.
"Well, neither of us knew, and you may have perished as a result!" He does not really smell like one, so my own pack wasn't even aware of it! " He grunts in frustration as he runs his hand through his hair.
"Since the first day we met, he hasn't harmed me. He probably would have already hurt me if he had intended to. " I object while shaking my head.
“You won't see him ever again.” He says this while doing what he typically does to scare people: crossing his arms. I wonder at what he is attempting. “You can't stop me. You cannot.”
He moves closer to me and leans in until our breaths combine.
“You will follow your mate and Alpha's instructions, Amanda.”
I smirk before shoving him away. “I'm a person, so your titles do not even apply to me, just in case you forgot.”
“What, you prefer him than your own fucking mate?” He seethes, his green eyes becoming black with rage.
"Don't try to trick me with that. I understand who we really are to one another and what our connection entails! What difference would it make if ---"
“Because I adore you.” His eyes are intensely blazing as he shouts. “Goddess, I'm so much in love with you, yet at the same time I'm fucking frightened.”
“What? But Why?” I mutter as I approach him cautiously and with little steps.
His green eyes are tormented as he chuckles sinisterly. When he approaches, my breath catches, causing me to step back, and it keeps happening until my back is against the wall and I have nowhere to go. Before I can run away, his arms encircle me, making my heart thunder away inside my rib cage.
"You could see me as a domineering guy, Amanda, but my every move is screaming from a broken soul. "Every bit of attention you devote to another man causes me to relapse into the depression I had when Elizabeth deceived me."
He moves his body so near to mine as he gets closer, and our lips are now only a breath apart.
"Who's to say that you won't abandon me as well? My previous mate didn't love me. When I see you with someone else, I can't help but feel an ache in my chest out of fear that they will steal you away from me. They can give you whatever you want, but all I have are trust difficulties and a messed-up background. Why wouldn't you desire a different man? " He chuckles sarcastically and turns to leave his desk. He takes a drink of whiskey while I stand there speechless, as though he wants to do nothing more than drown his misery.
I was unaware of how severely hurt he had been by Elizabeth's treachery; it seemed as though she had torn his soul as well as his heart.
"I want just you, Gabriel, and I love you too." I say quietly, pleading with him to turn around and look me in the eyes. "Elizabeth and I are different in that way. I accept you just as you are, with all of your flaws. I'll keep bringing that up till it sinks in for the rest of my days. "
No, it won't. Finally, turning and resting on his desk, he grinned ruefully.
"Do you really believe that I can be patched up like a foolish teddy bear and that I won't remember what happened? Amanda, that won't work with me."
“I'll keep trying then….” I say with resolve as I gently approach him till I am standing in front of him and staring into his enormous eyes.
"Until my dying breath, I'll fight for you and use every ounce of my love to heal you."
At the suggestion of death, he growls in defense and pulls me up to him by my elbow. I give him a sweet grin and reach out to cup his face, rubbing his still-tasting-of-alcohol lips with my thumb.
He continues to be overly protective, especially when he is angry with me, which I find sweet. Gabriel, you are wonderful to me just the way you are. Therefore, I would not want to fix you. I mumble as I rise up onto my toes and bend his head to give him feathery, soft kisses all around.
"Amanda..." His voice is on the verge of breaking as he mumbles my name in anguish.
“I love you, my love.” I mumble back, stopping him with a kiss to prove how much I care.
