Chapter 14
The half-time whistle blows, and the players jog back to their side of the court, huddled close together along with their coaches, formulating tactics and putting their backup plans into action. I see their coaches' hands waving and their mouths moving, as if they're giving directions. "How about we go grab some food?" Daisy responds with a lovely arch of her brows. "You've already had some!" "I'm a young lady." I stroke my tummy with a cheeky grin before dragging her upward by the arm. "Is there anything you want? "Daisy and I are on our way to get some groceries."
They all rattle off their orders with us trying to remember it all. Linking my arm with hers, I make my way up the stairs. As I look up, my eyes meet Gabriel's who is currently looking behind me with a frown. Before I can look back, an arm wraps around my shoulders which belongs to Dallas. He's one of the few friends I have made when I started this school, a well-known swimmer here. I have watched him before during one of my gym periods and he is impressive.
"Hey Amanda, how are you finding the game so far?" He asks, pointing back to the court.
They all yell instructions at us, and we attempt to memorize them all. I climb the stairs by linking my arms with hers. As I raise my head, my gaze is drawn to Gabriel, who is frowning behind me. Before I can turn around, an arm belonging to Dallas wraps over my shoulders. He's a very well-renowned swimmer here one of the very few friends I've made since starting this school. He's someone I've seen previously in one of my workout sessions, and he's rather remarkable. "How are you liking the game so far, Amanda?" He inquires as he returns his gaze to the court. I nod absently, my gaze drawn to Gabriel's irritated frown as he turns to look at Dallas. "I'm delighted I came," says the speaker. "Well, I'm delighted you did," says the narrator. He gives a boyish smile and leans in a little too near. When I watch Gabriel get up, fists clinched and ready to charge towards us, I grin slightly, my heart beating. His whole body is stiff and trembling, and he's looking angrily at the boy who has his arm around my waist.
As he takes some few steps forward, I give him a warning stare before Indigo drags him back and forces him to sit on the bench. When Dallas pushes me further closer to his side, Gabriel tries to rise up again, but is restrained by Theo, who goes to school here and knows both of them. They're conversing with him, and I can tell they're attempting to make him feel better. I turn around and walk up the stairs with a grimace on my face, puzzled as to why he reacted the way he did. He appeared enraged and as if he was going to rush on to Dallas and me.
I grab some snacks and desserts and waiting for Daisy and Austin to finish eating before returning to the bleachers. My steps slow as we get closer to Gabriel's row, and I'm torn between talking to him and not talking to him. Daisy and Austin have taken their spots and are speaking with my pals, so I look back. I decided to join them, sighing, knowing that I can definitely speak to him later.
As I make my way down the stairs, offering food to Mark, Linda, and another of my pals, I can feel a stare burrowing behind of my skull. I ignore the sensation and return my attention to the game as the whistle blows, bringing the players back into action. The ball is given to the best player, Lorenzo, after a period of players attempting but failing to win points on each other. We still need to win by two points, and the air is tense. I watch as he sprints ahead at breakneck speed, deftly avoiding the opposing team's players. He's approaching the hoop with such force that I'm pushing forward in my seat, anticipating his arrival. Finally, Lorenzo tosses the ball up into the loop, and we watched it round the rim before sinking inside, eliciting screams and hollers from the crowd, with our team sprinting all across court to congratulate each other. I scream with ecstasy, raising my hands and being hoisted by Dag, who twirls me about in joy, his lips giggling. We were victorious! I suppose going to the game wasn't such a horrible idea after all.
After everyone has left the gym, I go to their locker room with my pals to congratulate the squad. Despite having graduated two years ago, Chris turns out to know the majority of the players. I watched as Mark and Dag knuckle and high-five the athletes while discussing concerning the game as well as the upcoming after-party.
I wait against the wall for them to finish, while Linda stays by Chris alongside Daisy walks away to find a private place to speak with her lover. I've just gotten it to the gym's exit, having decided to wait outside, when my name is called from behind. When Jorge finally caught up to me with a broad smile in the parking lot, heads shift in my direction. He's shirtless and boldly flaunting his abs and chiseled muscles, his shorts dangling low around his hips and threatening to fall off until he pulls them up.
"Isn't your name Amanda? We have Art in common." He grins as he runs his fingers over his thick brown hair. I welcome him with a grin. "Yes, we certainly do. Congratulations on a job well done out there." He chuckles and rubs behind his neck before thanking me, almost hesitantly. "So, are you planning on attending the party? What do you think about me picking you up?"
I consider the possibility; it wouldn't harm to go if he invites me directly. Maybe I'll go for one hour or two and then leave if things become too rowdy. But an arm wraps round my waistline and pulls me backward into a warm chest before I can respond. When I look up, Gabriel is fiercely staring at Lorenzo, his grip on me tightening. "She declines." Jorge 's eyes bulge and his palms are raised in a surrendering gesture as he says this fiercely. "Whoa! Sorry, I didn't realize she's in a relationship ."
