Chapter 24

Important Note: Amanda is not experiencing heat in this chapter; instead, she is suffering from a cold. Remember how I stated at the outset that in my writings, humans do not suffer from heat.

As I lay on my belly in bed, I sigh loudly at the relentless discomfort I'm experiencing. My nose is congested, I'm suffering from a severe headache, my house is chilly, and my entire body hurts. As I rise up, I inwardly cry as I hear the doorbell chime resound throughout the home. My body cries in protest, and my temples ache with each stride, forcing me to come to a halt and regain my balance. I gently made my way downstairs and towards the front door, wrapping a shawl around my shoulders. When I unlock the door and pull it open, I'm welcomed by a lovely Gabriel dressed casually.
I allowed him in and locked the door before walking up the stairs, croaking a hello. Soon later, I hear his movements close behind me. I flop back down onto my bed, covering myself up, after coming through my open door. I groan as I close my exhausted eyes against the heat which they are radiating. "It's been three days since you've been to school." His rich baritone reverberates across the room, making me quiver uncontrollably at its huskiness. "I'm dying, Gabriel, and you want me to come to school?" I say as he glides towards the side of my bed, tilting my face to gaze up at him. "Are you following me around?"
When he crouches down, his worried eyes contact mine. As his warm palm caresses my face, I close my eyes. "Would you mind just keeping your hand there?" "Right now, I feel like I'm in Antarctica." Smiling as I hear him giggle, I sigh contentedly as he begins to place soft kisses on my icy skin, instantly warming it. As sparks litter my skin, electricity swirls through my veins, prompting me to put my arms round his neck and draw him closer. He tucks his hands beneath the blanket and inside my hoodie, tightening his grasp on my waist while I shiver.
He slowly lays one hand on my brow, and now on my neck region, shaking his head then screaming curses beneath his breath. I see him walk out of the room when he stands, only to return a few moments later. "Can you tell me what you're doing?" My voice is changed from the sickness, and I grumble. With his darker green eyes, he glances down at me, got me wondering what has made him so worked up. He inserts a thermometer under my tongue as I open my mouth, tapping my lips and holding up a thermometer. As we wait, he's stiff, his knuckles white from gripping the table the bedside and his jaw gritted. His look tells me he's enraged.
When I recall I had a thermometer inside my mouth, I'm going to ask him again. "Have you been unwell for a long time?" "It's been since Tuesday night." After he removes the thermometer, I shake my head. "You're not required to –" "Amanda, you are mine. I have to look after you. What if your temperature became more severe? You're not secure alone in this place." He growls loudly, and the sound reverberates across the room. "How come you didn't call me?" I avert my gaze shamefully. "I wouldn't want to trouble you," says the narrator. "You'd never be able to trouble me, Amanda." As his knuckles stroked the hot flesh of my cheek, he sighs, the wrath in his eyes fades.
"Don't get out of bed. After you take a nap, I'll cook you something to eat." He declares, leaving no space for further debate. He turned to walk out after covering me with the blanket until it reaches my neck. When he comes back in with two pills and a glass of water, I'm attempting to sleep. I thank him as I sit up with a deep grunt, my body aching, before taking the tablets and drinking them with water. When I return it to him, I realize that he is still gazing at me. Before his lovely emerald eyes vanish and turn steely and cold again, he displays a wide range of emotions. "I'm having trouble sleeping since everything hurts."
When heat shoots through my eyelids, I close my eyes and then open them again. He takes off his jacket and shoes with a conflicted expression on his face. He grabs the blanket's edge and pulls it up to his knees on the bed. As my eyes become tired, I move away from him to create room and turn away from him. I shudder as he growls quietly into my neck, nuzzling my skin using the tip of his nose, yelping as his arm wraps round my waist and drags me back towards his rock hard chest. "Don't try to flee from me." I have a gentle chuckle. "I just made space for you to feel comfortable, and trust me when I say I'm not in a good mood to run so you as well can forget that buddy."
His only answer is to tighten his arms around me and cuddle me closer to him, his chin resting upon my head. As his lips strokes my hair in delicate kisses, I hum in joy. "'Gabriel,' I begin, my eyes widening with surprise. "Won't being so close to me make you sick?"" "I'll be OK, mi amor" he says. (My love.) I hum, spinning around and snuggling even further into his warmth. For a long time, it's silent, and I can feel sleep encroaching on me. After a few days of not getting enough sleep, I embrace it with arms wide open, knowing that I'll eventually woke up properly rested and maybe more refreshed.
But as I'm whisked away to the kingdom of dreams, Gabriel whispers sweetly to me, "My lovely angel." And I fell asleep with a sweet grin on my face and a tingle on my cheek from his kiss.
