CHAPTER 21
Bruce’s words racing through her mind Amelia stepped out of the pack house the world gradually fading into a blur. A Hybrid. She was a Hybrid. Its concept saddened her and enthralled her because it was beyond her imagination and rebelled against all that she once considered about herself.
She walked up and down the pack grounds, not being conscious of the frowns conveying the same message she saw on the faces of pack members. Her feet began to tap dance on their own accord, which took her away from the pack house, comfort, safety, and Bruce and his revelations.
After some moments Amelia came to a halt; she realized that she was on the verge of the forest with the cool night breeze blowing softly. Her world kept spinning as she leaned against the strong tree trunk; the roughness of the bark grounding her.
She blinked and whispered to herself, “This cannot be true”. “There is some mistake here”.
But, decision-making began filling her mind with fragments of the past that she was desperately trying to wash out. Throughout the years she would dismiss such things as improved eyesight due to observation, increased strength due to adrenaline, and connection with the moon and the forest that she would just think of as deep affection to nature.
Could it be that it was all her wolf all along? Apart from the confidants, is there something inside of her that she could not comprehend?
Amelia now found herself eager, she sat straight up as her eyes opened wide. To understand the true derangement of this situation, there was but one way to get answers. She had to tell everything to her parents.
In the morning, Amelia decided to follow the path to get answers and go towards the house where she grew up with fresh determination. Another seemingly significant element at this stage was the fact that they were a little bit far from the pack lands. If her parents had intentionally decided on this house to live in, knowing who she is? Were they trying to be far from her the whole time? Have they done so literally or have they in essence left her out in the cold just as they threatened to do?
Her thoughts were elicitated with rife questions as she strolled. They thought as she had never shifted, she was not a real Hybrid until they found out otherwise. Why was she unable to hear the mind link between the wolves which she was fully aware of in the pack? Most of all, what interests were her parents seeking to protect, and why had they not told her these things for so long?
Amelia was on her parent's porch before she even knew it. It was rather unbelievable that her mother loved potted plants so much that she tended them while the yellow welcome mat was as old as she remembered, the sight did not tally with the complexity of her emotions.
Taking a deep breath, Amelia started rubbing the back of her head and then she knocked on the door. The sound appeared to be extremely loud, a sign that showed she had been restless throughout the night, a feeling far from a serene night.
Finally, the door swung open, which, although it felt like the longest few seconds of her life, could not have been more than a few seconds. The lady who was standing close to Amelia was her mother by the name of Rose, who seemed to be so glad to find her daughter.
"Hey, Amelia! What a sweet surprise. I did not think that you would be here tonight. To be frank I never thought that one day I would see you again, what you did during your wedding ceremony was terrible. Is everything in order? Rose saw the look of fear in Amelia’s eyes, she saw her ruffled hair and unkempt appearance, and Rose could not help but let her smile falter.
In a small voice that did not sound like she was in control of it any longer, Amelia reached out and touched her mother on the arm lightly before saying, “Mom. ” “We need to talk. Now. ”
Then, Rose’s face morphs into a look that hints at. . . fear?. . . pinning herself on her face before rearranging her face to put on a serene look. “Of course, sweetheart, come in. There in the living room is your father. We can all”
“No,” Amelia said interrupting herself and the doctor, her voice was a tad sharp even to her ears. Me and you alone, Mom. That is what I wanted to ask you. Something important. "
Still looking at her husband, Rose slowly nodded her head after a brief break in the conversation. "Okay," she uttered quietly. I just walk into the house and tell him that we are just taking a walk around. Okay over here.
Amelia fidgeted on the porch, uncomfortably while Rose got lost in the house. A rebellious side of her wanted to stand up as the young girl and challenge her immediately but another side of her that she was discovering belonged to her subconsciously advised her patience.
Rose returned a few minutes later wearing the same outfit but with her jacket draped around her neck. She linked her arm with Amelia’s: “Come on. ” “There we can speak privately. ”
Leaving the warmth of the house and walking towards a small copse of trees behind the house, they didn’t say a word. This place was loved by Amelia when she was a child, spending hours here, building fairy houses, and at that time, planning her fabulous adventures. She was expecting what she was about to see was going to be horrible, real magic.
They reached a small glade and here Rose looked at the girl. It was the look under the burning moonlit lamps, a look that Amelia had never seen before in her mother—that silvery, glowing look.
“Alright Amelia. ” Rose said, her voice calm but with slight insecurity. “What is it that you would like to ask?
Inhaling a deep breath, Amelia was as ready as she could be. She scolded and said, “Mom”, the quiver in her voice was pronounced. Such would be the questions that preoccupy the Hybrid lf in the Experimental drama, such as “Am I a Hybrid lf? Am I?”
Those words were filled with meaning and still, after she had spoken the words out loud, hung heavy in the air. After Captain Kohl gave back the tablet to Rose and left the room, she sat there quietly staring at Amelia’s face for quite some time. She nodded then, slowly.
"Yes," she mutely replied. "You are, indeed. "
Even though there was a feeling that came as a shock to her; as strongly as one could get a blow on the stomach Amelia felt the confirmation. This time she retreated with many things going through her mind.
"What?" she muttered. “It cannot be so… Why was I blissfully ignorant? Why didn’t you let me know it?”
Rose reached out for the hands and touched them to Amelia. She gave vent to a lot of feelings, ‘Oh, my darling girl’ “We wanted to tell you’. We were so close so many times. However, we tried to maintain your safety. Indeed, where we thought we were right, we were right.
Returning Amelia’s grip with a rather harsh tug, there was a flare of anger in her pupils’ irises. “Defend me? Through always lying to me my entire life? To making me believe that I was…”.
"Human?" Rose finished gently. ‘You are human, Amelia,’ Hybrid, the Force, they do not define who you are; they are only a part of you, a segment that we wanted to avoid exposing you to. ”
Amelia gave her head a couple of shakes, as she tried to take everything in. "However, why? I do not understand, how come you would hide such information from me? Furthermore, how? It was something to the effect of, ‘You almost suppressed yourself,’ Bruce told me. What does that imply?
