CHAPTER 36
Amelia listened carefully to the night’s music while she moved on the path of the forest where Elijah guided her. Due to her half-breed nature, she was able to walk silently and at the same time, sense any danger or chase around her.
Amelia could sense the magical wards around the cabin increasing the nearer she got to the Cabin. Holding back in agony she continued. Caroline had tried to avoid the situation at all costs and although she had attempted to defend herself adequately with magic, it was not enough to dissuade a hybrid.
Before her, the cabin rose, a black silhouette against the background of the night sky. Amelia went closer to the structure cautiously, every part of her focus on detecting any sign of liveliness from inside. A light was on in the house and the windows were covered by curtains through which one could faintly make out the light.
Amelia took a deep breath before approaching the door and knocking violently on it. Moments passed and it seemed that there were no more noises until the soft sound of crawling was heard again. A grey-haired woman whose face contorted with surprise when Amelia stepped out from behind the door which squeaked.
Caroline said, “You,” with an accent she used A hybrid of Suprise and perhaps even a hint of fear.
‘Me,’ Amelia said firmly. Caroline, do you have a moment We have to discuss something. Right now. "
For a moment there was even a chance that Caroline would attempt to slam the door in her face. But the elderly woman slightly deflated her shoulders, and waving Amelia in, moved to the side.
The inside of the cabin looked rather cramped but comfortably furnished; all sorts of strange-looking trinkets, tomes, and scrolls were spread across the available worktops. Amelia looked at the surroundings and glanced at everything she moved in the room alike for a possible weapon or an escape route.
What Caroline said almost in a whisper was “I guess I should not be surprised”, and she sat down in a worn-out armchair. “Well, you were always famous for being a witty girl, I should have known you would come up with this at some point. ”
Despite her age, Amelia was not knocked off her feet emotionally and was certainly pro-active. >” Carefully calculate what exactly? That you and Ema were sneakily meeting? That you created a plan to endanger the Pack, Bruce, and myself?”
Caroline burst into a hollow laugh out of the two. Can that be your perception of the given scenario? What does any possibly minuscule scheme of your own to muscle into the Privy Council have to do with me? "
“So tell me,” Amelia forced the issue. Let me know what you want to use it. What is the meaning of the short conferences? Why would you turn Ema against us? "
Caroline's gaze grew strained. ‘I have not made Ema hate anybody All I have done is open her eyes to the truth, the truth which the rest of the Pack cannot or will not see’.
Amelia also felt the half-black half-white girl rising inside her and she felt angry. ‘Well, what then is that truth?’
Caroline responded very directly and told Beta straight, “That you pose a threat. ” “That everything that we own, all that we have created, everything we have worked for, and everything that we serve is endangered just because you are within the Pack. ”
But Amelia could feel the words on her skin and did not flinch on her face at least. ‘Because I have that benefit of being a hybrid ’
Caroline gave a nod. “Yes, partially. Your kind… you are unpredictable, dangerous… But it’s much more than that. ” “It is what you represent.
To which Amelia, tearing up, could only shake her head in total confusion. ‘Safe?’ Caroline, the world is evolving. The people are turning into animals, the organizations are becoming tyrants, and the strategies – are getting stronger every day We cannot go on like this.
“At the expense of what? Of who are we? Our selves?” Caroline asked at her turn. “And you bring corruption with you, even though you try to dress it up with the idea of evolution; weakening our power and our lineage. ”
That exchange shared an electric atmosphere as the two women looked at one another with a lot of hostility. Seeing Caroline’s reaction Amelia finally spoke and her voice was husky. "You're wrong, Caroline. Regarding me and the things I believe in. I adore this pack. Thus, risking her life and saving them both—Bruce—and the pack. Wonder Woman would do the impossible. Due to my hybridity, I turn out to be an asset and not a liability.
For a moment Caroline looked at me kindly, and I could see that the cruelty I had seen earlier in her eyes was gone. "You might think so. Perhaps, in the next part of this conversation, where you said it might be true that you do mean it, I misunderstood you. However, kids, intentions do not pay the rent. Despite this contingency plan, they label it as the road to hell as the saying goes.
Amelia said and I nodded, “It is paved with good intentions. ” I know the proverb too well, though I kept my focus on Caroline, “But Caroline, you are taking the risky path here Where does it end, these clandestine meetings that turned Ema against her Pack, that sent me away, that sought Bruce overthrown?
Caroline did not speak anymore, but by the look on Caroline’s face from that time on, Amelia could tell all.
‘I came here tonight to understand, to make peace,’ said Amelia with dangerous calmness ‘but you keep on painting me the monster here and threatening this Pack’s future. ’ ‘I’ll stop you if you continue on this path and keep this vendetta against me and this Pack. ’
Caroline reached for what must have been the maximum of her vertical capability and stood. However, Hybrid, is that a threat?
Of the two women Caroline might have been frightened of, one had been rendered powerless and the other met his gaze defiantly. It is an assurance. To the Pack, to Bruce, and now to you. Caroline, I will protect what I love. I kindly plead that one does not make me explain how far I am willing to go to achieve that. "
The two women then stared at each other without the possibility of either of them backing down for what seemed like a very long time. Caroline then spoke and you could add a few more years to her age based on that sigh.
She recognized the fact that “You are indeed more formidable than I first thought you were. ” Nevertheless, she is not through yet. The concerns that Ema as well as I have are warranted. They are not going to disappear into thin air because you wished for it thus you need to learn how to live with different people. "
Amelia looked uncomfortable and simply made a face as she agreed. “I am aware. However, I will not either. Caroline, keep that in mind. I have studied the issues well enough to be ready for any trick you have pulled on Ema or any other plan you have set in motion. ”
Amelia sat with her back facing the door and as she got up she was smiling, and she walked out of the cabin. The ideas of what she was looking for and the consequences of what she had found went through her mind as she retraced through the forest at night.
Bruce did not realize the actual level of danger that he was in. Caroline also had some rather bitter feelings towards her, and the reformation that she represented. And Ema, well, Ema was in the exact middle fully, perhaps too deep to be made to change her mind.
Amelia could anticipate what the discussion that was going to take place in the Packhouse would be all about. Hear everything about the encounter with Caroline, the midnight ride, and the size of the conspiracy against them, she would have to tell Bruce.
Nevertheless, as Amelia got into bed and moved closer to her partner, she felt a strong determination come upon her. Her dual personality was seen as a weakness that could be used against her; hence, Caroline and her supporters underestimated her. Soon enough, they would learn the extent to which they had been wrong.
Regardless of what stood in her way, be it foes she had to face or threats hiding in the dark, Amelia was ready for all of them. She would stand for Bruce and the Pack and for the life that they were building from scratch. And whoever dared to get in her way, may the good Lord Himself save you!
