CHAPTER 31

CHAPTER 31

Ema left the house and stepped into the picturesque forest; leaves had already fallen, and only her steps could be heard through the carpet of leaves; the forest was unusually quiet. All her mind was full of the events of the last few days, and every step she took seemed to her an effort against her conflicting emotions.

Ema could not drive out this evil feeling of being followed as she got closer to Caroline’s secret cabin. She halted for a while and was looking around the trees in anticipation of finding something that appealed to her but nothing happened. The pins and needles at the back of her neck remained with her.

Pushing aside her uneasiness, Ema walked over to the cabin and executed the coded knock: They have a fast three taps, and then two slow ones. As the door slowly opened Caroline’s tired looking face emerged.

Caroline was at the door, “You are running late,” she said and allowed Ema into the house.

Ema’s shoulders started to drop as soon as Caroline shut the door behind them. To Caroline, the cabin was synonymous with security and freedom to talk so that she would not have to look over her back to see if someone was eavesdropping.

Caroline stayed busy with the most accurate and efficient motions of preparing tea. “Well?” she asked, reinstating her gaze to Ema. ‘What do you bring, news?’

Ema took a deep breath that was to gather her thoughts together. She began speaking softly even though the cabin seemed hidden from the world’s eye, “There was an attack on the Pack. ” “A band of outlaws, amongst them were werewolves and other creatures. ” It was quite intense.

Caroline looked around, snapping her eyes open wide in surprise. "An assault? But how did Alpha and his rather more admiring half-breed companion do?

‘They fought hard,’ Ema could not help but comment in approval. There will always be one’s favorite dishes, favorite people, and their interaction; Amelia and Bruce. ., they were amazing It was like watching them as if they could read each other’s minds based on how they supported each other.

Caroline furrowed her brow. ‘And you? What role did you play in this war? ’

Ema did not immediately respond, her hand subconsciously going to her shoulder which was still sore from the fighting. Softening her voice she muttered: “ I… I am the one who saved Amelia. ”

Caroline did not say anything for a while. After she had supped the tea, she put down two steaming mugs on the little table in front of them and sat opposite Ema. When at last she did utter words, how they were said was cautious. “Indeed, I got it. So, what did Bruce and Amelia say about this…heroic act?”

Ema took a sip of her tea and burnt her tongue a bit with the hot tea. "Bruce said that now he has full confidence in me, he vowed to give me the future of the Pack, Amelia’s life, and his life. "

Caroline's gaze grew strained. And what about the credibility of such a witness?

"I . . I am not sure, Ema responded the level of irritation in her voice more intense than before. Caroline, believe me, you should have seen the expression in his eyes. It rather felt like something real, that look he was giving me; Amelia was appreciative too. It is during this conflict that something shifts between the two of us. It is true that we appreciated one another and ensured that our fellow companions were defended. "

Caroline leaned back on her chair folded her arms on the table and began drumming her fingers on the table. "What a great plan our small one has been, isn’t it,’ thought she to herself as she noticed it working better than had been expected. Ironically the phrase “It is amazing how you have been trusted instantly” can be used to give an account of how fast you build trust with everything that is going on..

Ema barely listened to her, however. She instantly realized all the fears that had been gnawing her to the core after the battle. "Caroline, I do not think I can endure this any longer; it is wrong to deceive them given how they viewed me, not to mention the confidence they put in me."

Caroline's face became stern. "You wanted it so do you wish me to refresh your memory as to why we started it in the first place? Hybrid represents the threat for all of us and the Pack. "

" What if we are wrong, though? Ema’s defensive, ‘I dare you,’ was said with shocking vehemence as if directing it at herself. Caroline said, ‘There is no way that Amelia was there when the fight happened. ’ Over and over again very few individuals could sacrifice their lives for the safety of the Pack. And what if this war they constantly discussing is real? How can we prevail over them if by sowing people’s distrust, we are making ourselves vulnerable?

Caroline suddenly latched onto Ema’s wrist with a rather tight grip."Ema, watch my mouth when I am speaking, or in other words, listen carefully to me. You are rationalizing your decisions using your emotions. They are designed particularly to lure you in and to make you doubt your abilities, and your capacity to make a decision. "

Ema tried to twist Caroline's arm free but Caroline had a very tight grip on it. "But-"

Caroline interjected, “No buts. ” “Think about everything that you have figured out so far: the lies and the secrets. ” she tried to make her understand “Do you think that they have learned to trust you and changed their minds? Or could it be that seeing that you are now on their side they are employing you and attempting to recruit you?”

Ema who was always known throughout as being strong and determined individuals become weakened by the situation, and Ema is the first one to lose her focus. Caroline said things that touched the core of the fear that has propelled her for years. She mumbled some words: “I. … I don’t know what to think of anyone anymore. “

Even though Caroline retained her vise-like grip on Ema’s wrist, her face lightened up a bit. “I know this is difficult,’ she said in what can best be described as the complete mother figure tone. ‘You too have gone through a bad incident, it is normal to have conflict, but Ema you have to stay strong, the direction you are taking is right’.

“Am I?” The repulsed feeling that came from despising the desperate voice tone made Ema question."Because I feel like I am lost in the dark right now and do not know where to turn. ‘

Caroline let go of Ema’s wrist and leaned back, inclining her head slightly with a long, drawn out sound that was seemingly audible as a sigh. As she said all this she looked off in the distance and said, “Let me tell you a story. ” “There was another hybrid in these parts a long time ago before your time Bruce's Father Let her appear as a helpful kind person like how you did to Amelia she became a member of the Pack.

Nevertheless, Ema could not sit still; therefore, she leaned forward even when she could hardly conceal her interest. "What took place?"
