CHAPTER 87

It was as if someone had ripped her heart into pieces, she was in so much pain. Not only was she imprisoned and made powerless, but she lost her friend and the pain of that loss was as deep as any flesh wound. ‘What are you going to do to me?’ she began to say, dreading that she sounded all too small and afraid" Amelia asked

In minutes light failed, and only the figure of the stranger in a hood was clearly seen, his smile reflecting the only living light as he said, ‘My dear, you are free to go’, and that chill ran right through Amelia’s body. ‘Of course,’ the first one sneered, ‘we’ll conduct a detailed examination of your special physiology, and when we get all the information we want – we will kill you. ’

Amelia felt herself panic, and it seemed to give her a boost in energy in a desperate move. She stood up and rushed to the structure with the bars of the cage and she grabbed the bars with her shaky hands., You can not do that! I have rights, I have a family that will come looking for me. At that moment, she thought about Bruce and Elijah. She thought about the last way they had looked before she became unconscious.

The hooded figure laughed loudly, and the kind of laugh could show boldly that he enjoyed her suffering. ‘Rights? I think you ceased to have any when you breathed your first breath as a disgusting half-breed,’ He paused and looked past her ‘Your family that you speak of, on the other hand, will become just as useless as you will be soon enough. ’

Next, Amelia shivered of implied threat in the words she had uttered by the man. But she masked it and Smiled "My Family will rip you apart"

‘They sheltered you, guarded you, and made it close to impossible to get to you, they will pay" the hooded figure snarled. "In our eyes, that makes them just as guilty as you are "

Amelia started trembling slightly, her eyes prickling with tears; she could feel the clutching feelings of fear, anger and despair in her heart. She looked at Ema again trying to find a way about but all she could see on her face was anger, trauma and deceit.

For a moment Ema was thrown. She fumed and was about to say something, but the figure with the hood in front of her made her stop. She only stood up straight and looked at Amelia begging her with her eyes to proceed with the plan.

“I’m sorry, Amelia, this isn't personal,” Ema said her tone didn’t quiver although her eyes reflected all the chaos she felt inside. Instead, this is how it has to be, she smiled, “for the benefit of all. ”

To the hooded figure’s approval, she nodded. “Well said Ema, I always knew that's something you were capable of I am happy to see that you are so dedicated to the cause of the party. ”

Ema straightened up a little taller at the praise but there was a struggle between the two Ema’s in her eyes, the actual and Amelia. He saw that there was a little of the woman he knew before deep inside the woman that was now controlled by the cult.

“Thank you, Alpha,” Ema said sweetly, although there was a note of pride as well as a trace of something that might have been fear in her voice. That’s all I want – to serve our pack and to defend the rights of the people like me whom this new world doesn’t want. ”

The man, who was wearing a hood – the Alpha Ema had mentioned –, then put a hand on her shoulder. ‘And you have done that beautifully. Your efforts today have helped to protect our kind for many generations to come. ’

As Amelia observed this spectacle, some conclusions started to appear in her head. It was as if the Alpha’s words, and Ema’s loyalty, all suggested that there was a much bigger mystery, a powerful prejudice against anything that challenged the order of the secret world of the supernatural. This is what Elijah had tried to protect her against.

“You are afraid of me. ” Amelia stated, for the first time, her voice was louder than she intended to have it. Ema and the Alpha had both twisted around to look at her and she saw the surprise written all over them. ‘You are not doing this for anybody else, for their protection; you are doing it because you are afraid of me and what I symbolize. ’

Even the grip on Ema’s shoulder that the Alpha had increasingly strengthened showed this. ‘You know nothing!’ he growled at me like a wild animal, ‘hybrid!’ ‘Your presence alone is dangerous to everything that we have worked for and defended for hundreds of years. ’

Amelia continued to push such doubts and questions to Ema – she saw for a brief instance that her words pinned the woman on the chair as a liar. ‘Why?’ I have not used my powers to harm anyone, I have only wanted to just live and finally reach the place that I always wanted to be in this world.

“Your place?” the Alpha derided. ‘You have no business being here,’ he snapped at her. ‘You are an abomination of very dangerous proportions – you’re a loophole, a possible wrench that can turn the tide between the vam’ and the wires. ’

‘Or save it" Amelia said and even though she was angry and insulted, she was also desperate to make them understand her side of the story ‘I could be the link that would end hostility between our species. ’

The Alpha gave a guttural response now like the sound of a real-life animal prowling its territory The sound bounced through the dungeon. What is more, there’s more to you, an interbreed; Begone from this land you foul man-mule! My hand is set to end you; The sweet nothings in your dissuasion cannot salvage you. ”

He looked at Ema and in a military-like fashion said, ‘’I want her weak and compliant for the tests we’ll be running. ’

Ema was briefly conflicted, switching her gaze from the Alpha, to, and back to Amelia. “But… that won’t be safe, will it? There is no knowing how her hybrid physiology will compensate for increased dosage. ”

‘’Do you have some objections to my command?” The Alpha’s voice was low and threatening as if he wanted to warn me about something.

‘‘No’’; Ema shook her head rather fast although Amelia could easily notice the struggle in her eyes. ‘‘No, Alpha. Of course not. ’’ There was no hint of humor in the woman’s voice anymore as she promised, ‘‘I will up the dosage immediately. ’’

When Ema tried to get nearer to the IV bag, Amelia tried to clutch onto her friend once more. “Ema, you will betray your original pack. Consider what you’re doing. That’s not you – that’s not the friend I’ve ever known, the person I left my life with. ”

Ema’s hands shook a bit to make the proper manipulation of the werewolf’s wolfsbane solution. She didn’t look directly at Amelia and her words were as low as possible. ‘I am so sorry, Amelia’, Ema ‘I am so, so very sorry indeed, but this is quite out of my control’.

Consequently, almost every change tied to the increased dosing of wolfsbane made itself known relatively quickly. Something seemed to pull at Amelia’s chest and her hands and feet started to tingle as she suddenly felt very dizzy. She leaned heavily against the bars of the cage she got into and could barely fight sleep.

As the last vestiges of her consciousness were fading, Amelia was half aware of the Alpha addressing Ema. ”Today was good and you have been very loyal, you follow our plans to the letter. Let’s sit and discuss the next step of our strategy. ”

Only when the footsteps of both men faded in the distance did Amelia struggle with the overwhelming tiredness. This, she realized, could very well be the end of her, should her head hit the pillow her eyes remain closed, and she never wakes up again. She tried her best to keep her eyes open, to try and find some way, any way, of escaping what was to her a living nightmare.

Sweating profusely in the darkness of the dungeon with nothing but the drip, drip of water and the soft sound of other prisoners’ shifting in their cells, Amelia resolved. She would get out, she would protect her family, would teach both the vampires and the werewolves that the two could indeed live together. But first, she had to endure the tests that she had yet to face.

Amelia could barely function while the wolfsbane ran through her body, but she refused to let herself die. She might be confined and excluded from the community and cheated but she did not lose her innocent soul. But even in the very blackness of her prison there emerged a light as a small flame of hope, which would endure through the trials that she was to suffer.
