Chapter 40

Jason's pov

As I walked out of the library, feelings of heartbreak, regret, and worry filled my heart.

"Arghh,” I picked up one of the chains and threw it to the floor, the clattering noise it made echoing loudly.

The echoes, that was the echo Sapphire was telling me about. My mind went back to an ancient werewolf mythology that proved that filled-up places echoed housed spirits and powers too deep for comprehension, spirits that were harmful to werewolves. I decided to go back and warn Sapphire and Alpha Black, but I could hear that they were already talking, and like Sapphire said, it was a sensitive family issue that I didn't need to be involved in, so I sat down on an old desk there.

I thought about what we had read. I was so curious that a part of me wanted to go back and listen, but my wolf warned me against making his mate angry; as it was, I had already done that enough. I rolled my eyes at him, he wasn't the only one with a mate, Sapphire is our mate not only his.

I genuinely thought she would walk a second time; I didn't know that third time's the charm, even in this case. She hates me now; I was a killer in her head, and the only I thing wanted to kill was the pain she was going through.

"Damn,” I cursed and buried my head in my palms. Things weren't going well with my mate, and instead of being her comfort, I was on her list of enemies. I thought about how possible it was for Alpha Sarah to be her mother; maybe they somehow broke a natural rule or something. The book had clearly said that elements were only born every thousand years, and for it to include that there was only one in every thousand years meant that it was impossible for an elemental to give birth to another one.

This was a puzzle, and I was itching to hear the answers when I heard Alpha Black scream out my name and that of Sapphire. What could be going on? Immediately, my instincts became alert, and I ran as fast as I could to a fainting Sapphire and Alpha Black in a dilemma.

“Sapphire!” I called out.

“What happened, Alpha?” I asked, trying to lift her up into my arms.

“She was panicking, she suddenly fainted.” Then he paused and looked at me, hatred filled in his eyes.

“Just take her out of here to her room; we can talk after that.” He said it coldly.

I lifted her up carefully. This was not the time for arguments or fights; we needed to focus on saving Sapphire first. My heart began to beat fast as I thought about all she had been through in such a small space of two weeks. This was too much to handle.

…………………………………………………

“She'll be fine; she just needs a while to rest. Her blood pressure went up because she was panicking, but there's really nothing much to worry about. I've placed her on medications, and she's expected to wake up in a few hours.” Doctor Jace announced.

“Thank you, doctor.” I said and walked him to the guest room where he would be staying to check on her regularly. When I got back, I saw Alpha Black seated on a chair next to her, and he was crying while clutching her hand with both of his hands.

I shut the door slowly so that other people didn't see the Alpha cry. Alpha to Alpha, it was much better.

I walked up to him and placed a hand on his shoulder, trying to reassure him. He turned to me, and his eyes darkened.

“You caused all of this. Why did you take her there without my consent? We have hidden this secret for twenty-four years of our lives, and you come in one day and just ruin it all with one action.” He roared.

“I was only trying to help. Weren't we trying to find an explanation and a solution to this problem?” I asked, perplexed. He stood up and charged at me, immediately shoving me against the closed door.

“Don't you dare meddle in my affairs,” his eyes were blackened and filled with rage. I struggled to get myself away from him and finally pushed him away.

“I don't know what you're hiding or why you're hiding it from her, but I promise you that as long as I'm her mate, I'll make sure that the truth comes out and you will be doomed.” I threatened, my veins popping out. I dusted my shirt and straightened it out, ready to leave them.

“You will never marry my daughter.” He let out.

I turned back to him; his face was reddened and his eyes were swelling as he panted. I could tell he was close to shifting, but that didn't scare me; I could take him.

“She is not your daughter, and you trying to use her for your selfish gains will never make you her father.”

He was dumbfounded and stared at me at first, but then slowly moved his eyes around the room, trying to avoid eye contact with me for the fear that I could read into him.

“Much better, Alpha.” I let out and turned to leave.
…………………………………………………
I contemplated leaving for my packhouse, but I couldn't leave with the condition in which Sapphire was. I needed to see her before going back to my pack to take care of things. I had already overstayed my welcome, and I realized that there were a lot of dark truths in this pack, so many yet told.

I walked to the kitchen and asked a maid to give me some lemon water. I need something to calm my head. Taking the glass from her, I sat down on a stool and sipped it slowly, allowing my mind to marinate in the happenings of the day.

“Alpha,” I turned to the person who called me.

“What do you know about Sapphire? What are they hiding?”
“And why should I tell you?” I fired back.

“Because I have the solutions to all her problems, I just need to know which one you need.”

I was not convinced and looked at him with suspicion-filled eyes.

“I know she's special, much more than an elemental.”

I froze.
