Chapter 49
The face behind the mask.
Sapphire's point of view:
I woke up to the awkward silence. He had not woken up and I turned to watch what he looked like while sleeping. No doubt my mate was a fine man, black hair, broad shoulders, brown eyes and beautiful plump lips that I was privileged to kiss. While I stared, Enya's excitement reached its peak. She was ecstatic and made me feel really restless.
“Touch him,” she said.
“No Enya, stop it. Don't start this.” I replied. She was going to get me in trouble one day. I turned around and sat on my side of the bed. I can't believe we even slept in a bed together after what happened last night. He couldn't even be a gentleman enough to leave the bed for me and sleep on a couch.
“Well, uhhm, you both will have to share a bed in the future, I think that's what he thought about?” Enya cut in.
“Urrgh Enya, shut up!” I scolded. She was quite a pain in the ass when it got to matters concerning Jason. She just wanted to be around him so much that she sometimes betrayed me.
I got done from the bed and went to the sofa, picked up my phone and started pretending that I had something to do with it, I was literally just scrolling through apps.
“You know that no matter how much you want, you can't hide it right?” Enya reminded me.
I rolled my eyes and ignored her.
“He just marked you,” she continued, “you both are surely destined for each other, I don't think otherwise.” She said and added a giggle at the end.
“You mean you both?” You and his wolf? Because as far as I'm concerned, Jason is a bad person, not worthy of being loved by me.” I scoffed.
Enya kept howling and it made me uncomfortable. She was not a listener, she always liked to have it her way. Not this time though.
“Stop it Enya.” She didn't, instead, it became more frequent.
“Stop it, I said.” She still didn't stop.
“I said shut up Enya!” Then she kept quiet, but someone else spoke. A deep baritone voice that I could feel deep in my stomach.
I didn't want to turn because I knew how awkward that would be but I also couldn't ignore him, he had woken up and he was talking to me, I had to answer.
Should I just pretend I am asleep?
“Sapphire.” I heard my name roll out of his tongue again. The sound of my name in his mouth was suddenly becoming my favorite. It had this captivating rhythm, like he played harps alongside when calling my name. It seemed like the weirdest description of a person's voice or the weirdest way to stalk a person I claimed to hate.
I turned back slowly to answer him. He was sitting on the bed, leaning on the head rest with his arms folded across his bare body and his eyes fixed on me. Enya growled.
“Now that's more like it. Take a look at his body, and then those eyes.”
“Shut up!” I said gnashing my teeth. Enya was indeed a pain.
“What did you say?” He asked furrowing his brows. Nice one Enya.
“I was not talking to you, I was having a conversation with my wolf.” I could barely look him in the eyes or look at him at all. He was such a perfect human being and I feared that looking at him would make me forget the horrible person he was.
“I am sorry about what happened last night. It was my fault and I should have never done what I did. I should have known better that as a wolf, I don't just go about giving hickeys because it could result in something like this.” He bowed his head. It seemed like a sincere apology but what I could not understand was him saying it was his fault. How?
I shifted on my seat.
“How? How was it your fault?” I asked silently praying that he would actually tell me the truth.
He looked at me and down again.
“I knew it was you.”
What?
Enya tried to calm me down because she knew I was about to explode. No wonder he didn't speak the entire time, he knew it was me and that his voice would implicate him. He knew just what he was doing. He knew that he wanted to mark me, it was all plotted beforehand.
“How dare you?” Rage filled my eyes and heart as he tried to explain.
“I don't want to hear anything you have to say. Just be quiet. And to think I was trying to convince myself that you are better than I portray you to be. You just proved me wrong again and I'm so grateful for that. It's a good thing I didn't consider listening to you or speaking to you. You are such a cheap fraud!”
I was outraged. How dare he play with my intelligence. He forcefully marked me, without my consent. I was going to take his side and say that I was the one who asked for the hickey but he knew all along what that would do and he went ahead. I felt so foolish.
I put my palm on my forehead to feel my temperature then I got up and paced the room. How did he know that I'd be here though?
I walked to his sorrowful self on the bed.
“How did you know about this party? How did you know that I would be here? Why did you come looking for me when you tried to kill me and then left me when you know it's not safe for me?”
“I'll answer all your questions, but I promise it's not my fault, I have my reasons and they are really in our best interests.”
“What do you mean our best interests?”
“Sapphire, if I don't make hard decisions, it could jeopardize both our lives.”
