Chapter 41
Sapphire's pov
I woke up tired the next morning with a headache. I looked around trying to remember how I got back into the hospital room then I remembered the day before. Was it just another dream? I lifted my legs to see if it could move and it moved. Then I got down from my bed and proceeded to go outside to check for my parents. I was relieved that my legs could move, that was enough sign that the previous day was all an imagination, another dream.
Outside in the pack house was quiet, the few people who were around going about their everyday business with no concerns whatsoever. Every single thing confirmed my suspicion that it was all a dream.
“Baby,” how do you feel now?” I turned to find mum smiling broadly at me, her white teeth showing.
I ran into her arms. Even she was okay, extra confirmation.
“I'm fine mummy,”. Childhood nostalgia creeped into my skin as I hugged her even tighter and wiffed the scent of her perfume. I called her mummy anytime I was scared of the thunder or the dark or something else and today, I was scared of losing her, losing death.
“Is everything okay?” She asked me, “you're crying.” I let go of her and touched my eyes. I was crying. I hadn't realized that I got so emotional at that moment.
“There's nothing, I'm fine.” I answered her drying my eyes, “something must have gotten into them,” I lied.
She looked relieved. I looked all over her, examining her for signs of any problems,
“Are you alright?” I asked.
She laughed and led me to a corner to sit.
“Of course I'm fine. You're the one I should be asking if something's wrong. I mean, you've been unconscious for some time and now you wake up and call me mummy and you're asking if everything is fine.” She said, genuine concern all over her face.
I paused for a second. A part for me really happy that yesterday was only a dream. I was only asleep but then the other part of me didn't believe what she said. It seemed like she had something to hide.
“I'm fine.”
She placed a hand on my face and smiled warmly and comfortingly.
“You know you can talk to me if anything ever goes wrong right?”
I nodded slightly still unsure of her intentions. There was never a day I thought I would doubt my mother but here it was, she and my father the biggest suspects in my mystery.
“What's an elemental?” I let out. The question brought a shock on her face but when she noticed I saw it, she regained her composure and furrowed her brows instead.
“A what??” She asked.
“An elemental…” I stressed.
“And what are those? Where did you hear that baby?”
I struggled to read her expression. She looked so innocent and confused and for a long time it remained that way till I looked away and then back at her. This time, there was a look for guilt and her eyes looked heavy. My heart broke at the possibilities of it being the truth.
“Errrm… it's nothing really. I had a dream about me being an elemental. A very crazy dream and it felt so real that I wanted to confirm it was not.” I lied, hiding my disappointment.
She looked relieved.
“Oh, I've never even heard about such a thing before. What are they? What was the dream about?” She asked, most likely trying to get details of what I recalled.
“Just some crazy stuff about you being an elemental which would in turn not make it possible, if I am, my mother and dad would also not be alive if you are in fact my parents. Normal wolves don't live as long as elementals so in summary, you both weren't my parents.” I blurted.
She stopped, then laughed, and cackled really hard. I was confused by her actions.
“Absolute nonsense,” she laughed, “sweetie, there's no such thing as an elemental and your father and I are your parents. It was only just a dream and I'm sure you had more of them. Any other one you want to share?” She asked, relaxed.
“No..I ..I don't remember any.” I stammered.
“Okay dear, you must be hungry?”
“Uhhm, I'm not.” I shook my head.
“Where's Jason?” I asked. Even if everyone would lie to hide something from me, he definitely wouldn't.
“He left early this morning. He said he had some pack business to take care of. Missing him already?” She teased.
“Ewww mum” I stated and started to walk away, something wasn't right.
On my way back in I ran into my dad and he paused for a while, waiting for me to speak first.
“Is everything okay?”
He jerked at my question.
“Uhhm, yes pumpkin, I'm just really happy to see that you're finally awake.” He said and hugged me.
“My pumpkin…, I'll always be here for you.” He said rubbing my back.
“I know that father. I know.” I retorted.
He let go of me and smiled.
“I'm about to go for a meeting with other Alphas, I'll be back later in the day and I'll check on you okay?” He started to take his leave.
“Please say hello to Jason for me. Tell him I remember what I am.”
He stopped in his tracks and turned.
“And what's that?”
“An elemental.” I mumbled.
“What?” His look was horrid.
“I'm instrumental,” I said out loud, “Jason said I'm instrumental in finding my life's true purpose and where I'm supposed to be. Telling him that, will make him realize that I'm awake. He must miss me after all.”
His distraught face softened.
“Oh, okay. He'll hear. I love you pumpkin.”
I watched him walk out of the door. My one way of finding out the truth was right outside. I went out after him and ran to the library. I went behind it to the old library and saw that it was locked. Just as I was about to go back, I noticed that it wasn't in fact locked, but arranged to look that way.
I swallowed hard and lost it slowly then walked inside. The table was still there, and the book right on top of it, but opening it, the page that talked about elementals had been ripped off.
My chest tightened. They were up to something.
