CHAPTER 337
Brian's face turned serious as he looked at the bodyguard beside him.
"Check the area. Now."
The bodyguard nodded quickly, understanding the urgency, and took off without delay.
Arianna was surprised at how fast Brian reacted. He noticed the possible danger in seconds and sent someone to investigate right away.
Her heart raced. The way Brian and Sarah treated the girl meant that if they found out, it would be a disaster for Arianna.
Even worse, if they suspected they had been discovered, they might move the girl, making it nearly impossible for Arianna to find her again. With so little time to learn the truth, that was a risk she couldn't take.
She needed to stay ahead of the bodyguard.
Without thinking, Arianna turned and sprinted down the dim hallway.
The bodyguard left the ward just as she turned a corner. He hesitated, then noticed a flicker of movement in the shadows and quickened his pace to chase her.
Arianna panted as she ran through the unfamiliar building, her footsteps echoing in the silence. She had no specific place to go and relied only on her instincts, hoping to shake off her pursuer.
Unfortunately, the bodyguard was familiar with the building. He zeroed in on the sound of her hurried steps, closing in faster than she expected.
The chase had started, but her chances weren't looking good.
The quiet of the medical facility felt heavy. Even the slightest sound of her running feet echoed loudly in the empty halls. She realized she couldn't keep going like this; eventually, the noise would give away her hiding place.
She needed somewhere to hide.
At the end of the hallway, Arianna hurriedly tried several door handles, growing more frantic with each attempt.
All were locked, and her frustration grew as the bodyguard's footsteps grew closer. Panic surged as she spotted a metal door leading to a power distribution cabinet.
Without thinking twice, she opened it, slipped inside, and quietly shut the door behind her. The cramped space felt tight, the cold metal pressing against her back, but it was her only option.
Moments later, the bodyguard stopped right outside. Arianna held her breath, her heart racing. She covered her mouth, trying to quiet her breathing as his shadow hovered nearby.
The bodyguard paused, looking suspicious. He approached the nearest ward doors, knocking on each one. Arianna flinched at the sound of each door opening, listening to him question the people inside. After checking each room and finding them empty, he stepped back out, growing more frustrated.
Finally, his footsteps faded down the hallway.
Arianna felt a glimmer of hope, thinking she might have escaped him. But just as relief washed over her, the cabinet door creaked slightly—soft but unmistakable.
Her heart sank as the bodyguard's steps abruptly stopped. The silence felt thick, and then she heard him turn sharply, heading straight for the cabinet.
Arianna swallowed hard, her shaking hand reaching into her backpack for a compact stun baton. She gripped it tightly, her knuckles turning white as she raised it, ready for whatever was coming.
There was no turning back now. If he found her, she had to defend herself to escape.
Failure wasn't just a risk for her; it would also put Xander in danger, and that was something she couldn't allow.
The bodyguard's slow, careful footsteps drew nearer, each step raising the tension in her chest.
Then, just as he reached for the cabinet door, the entire corridor was engulfed in darkness.
The sudden blackout caught the bodyguard off guard, stopping him in his tracks.
Arianna barely had time to react when a strong hand grabbed her wrist from the shadows. She gasped and instinctively tried to pull away, but the thumb of that hand tapped twice against her wrist, a touch that felt oddly familiar and soothing.
Her struggle faded as a cautious calm took over. Whoever held her wasn’t a threat.
The hand carefully led her out of the cramped space. Her heart raced as the figure moved quickly, pulling her into the dark hallway. Without warning, an arm wrapped around her waist, pulling her close and steadying her.
For a brief moment, she froze, feeling the warmth of the embrace against the cold tension surrounding them.
The bodyguard turned on his phone’s flashlight, scanning the dim hallway with focused attention. Just as the light approached them, Arianna was silently pulled into a nearby room.
The movement was swift and precise, executed with such skill that there was no chance of making a mistake.
He approached the power distribution cabinet, shining his light inside for a careful look. It was empty, showing no signs of anyone being there.
He squinted suspiciously, his brow furrowed. Noticing nothing out of the ordinary, he let out a frustrated sigh and stepped back. After clicking the cabinet door shut firmly, he turned and walked away.
