CHAPTER 344
Renee's reaction made it clear—she had likely tried to escape before, only to be caught and dragged back. It must have happened more than once for her to have such an intense stress response.
Arianna reached over and gently squeezed Renee's hand, her voice steady and reassuring.
"Don't worry. I promise I'll get you to Professor Corwnell. Trust me."
Arianna sat in the backseat with Renee, her eyes darting between the road ahead and the rearview mirror.
The tension in the car was palpable as Ronald focused on navigating the winding road at high speed.
Suddenly, her gaze sharpened, and she leaned forward, her voice cutting through the rush of the wind and the hum of the engine.
“Stop the car!”
Ronald’s hands gripped the steering wheel tighter, and his foot slammed on the brake instinctively. The car screeched to a halt, leaving tyre marks on the asphalt. The abrupt stop sent everyone lurching forward, the seatbelts pulling them back in place.
“What? Why?” Ronald exclaimed, turning to Arianna, his brows furrowed in confusion.
“Are we being followed?”
Arianna didn’t respond immediately.
Renee’s voice quivered, barely above a whisper.
“Is something wrong? Are they…c-catching up to us?” Her voice trembled with fear, and her frail hands clutched the edge of the seat, shaking visibly.
Arianna glanced at her, her expression softening despite the tension in her own body.
“No, nothing’s wrong,” she said firmly, her voice calm and soothing.
"Just breathe deeply and try to stay calm. Okay.."
Renee’s wide, frightened eyes darted toward the windows as if expecting danger to close in at any moment. Sensing her unease, Arianna added with quiet determination,
“You’re safe with me. No one is going to hurt you. Not while I’m here.”
Ronald sat in the driver’s seat, his hands firmly clutching the steering wheel as he looked at Arianna, clearly bewildered.
“Mrs. King, what’s happening?” he asked, glancing at her through the rearview mirror.
Instead of answering, Arianna flung open her door and stepped out. She confidently approached his side and yanked his door open.
“Get in the passenger seat,” she commanded, her tone resolute and unwavering.
Ronald turned to her, utterly perplexed.
“What? Why? What are you doing—”
"Mr. Crawford, move quickly! We don't have time—get out now!" she commanded sharply, her eyes narrowing with urgency.
He hesitated, staring at her as if she had lost her mind.
“Are you serious?”
“Do I look like I’m joking?” she retorted, crossing her arms in impatience.
Muttering under his breath, Ronald finally unbuckled his seatbelt and climbed out of the car.
He grumbled as he walked around to the passenger side and settled into the seat.
Arianna took the driver’s seat, adjusted the mirrors, and gripped the wheel firmly. “Put your seatbelt on,” she instructed, without looking at him.
Ronald observed her, still trying to comprehend the situation. “Mrs. King, you’ve got this ‘seriously intense’ vibe going on, and it’s not exactly comforting."
Arianna didn’t dignify him with a response. Instead, she started the engine with a determined focus.
Ronald, still unsure, tried to press the matter. "Maybe I should—"
Before he could finish, Arianna floored the accelerator, launching the car forward like a rocket.
Ronald clutched his seatbelt, his eyes wide with disbelief. He had never been driven by Arianna before and had assumed she would be a cautious, gentle driver. Instead, her intensity left him speechless.
The tyres screeched as Arianna switched lanes seamlessly, her foot pressing the gas pedal as though she were in a race.
Ronald had never watched Arianna drive before, so he expected her to be careful like many women. What happened next surprised him completely.
Arianna drove with an astonishing intensity. She pressed the gas pedal hard, and the car leaped forward with impressive speed. Changing lanes was effortless for her; each move was accurate and showed confidence.
Ronald, who had known her for a while, was shocked. He thought she hadn’t driven much in two years, yet here she was, handling the car like a pro.
His surprise quickly turned to worry when the security team from the medical facility began chasing them, their car getting faster.
Ronald chose to stay quiet, worried that even a single word might distract her. He held on tightly to the armrest, preparing for the wild ride, impressed by how calm she was under pressure.
In the car behind, the once-unconscious bodyguard sat beside the driver, looking pale but determined. He had just managed to get a quick shot for medical help, just enough to rejoin the pursuit.
He understood he couldn’t fail—if Renee got away, the consequences would be serious.
What he didn’t expect was Arianna’s amazing driving. No matter how hard they tried, her skilled manoeuvres kept them at a distance, leaving the bodyguard frustrated as they struggled to catch up.
The bodyguard hesitated before pulling out his phone and dialling Brian’s number.
When the call connected, he reported in a tense voice,
“Sir, a woman disguised as a nurse has just helped Renee escape. We’re in pursuit, but her car is too fast. I don’t think we’ll be able to catch up to them. I apologize, but she might get away.”
Brian’s voice was icy as he lashed out. “How incompetent can you be? You had one job—to watch her!”
He paused, exhaling sharply as he fought to rein in his frustration. Scolding wouldn’t fix the situation now.
“A woman…” Brian repeated the word slowly, his mind racing. A sudden realization struck, and a flicker of panic crossed his features.
“Could it be Arianna King?”
Only Arianna would be reckless enough to pull a stunt like this.
If she had indeed gotten involved and helped Renee escape, the truth from years ago would inevitably come to light. That could not be allowed to happen.
Brian’s expression darkened as he ordered coldly,
“Send me your location. I’ll dispatch reinforcements immediately.”
The bodyguard nodded at the other end. “Understood.”
After a moment of silence, Brian’s tone turned deadly.
“This is a loose end that should have been dealt with long ago. Now that Renee’s been found, she cannot be allowed to leave alive. Make sure she dies in an…accident.”
The bodyguard hesitated. “But…Mrs. King is in the car with her. She’s the wife of Xander King.”
Brian let out a bitter laugh.
“If she’s foolish enough to involve herself in this, then she’ll die alongside Renee. Loose ends are loose ends—no matter who they are.”
