Chapter 20
Not forgiving is like drinking rat poison and then waiting for the rat to die.
—Anne Lamott
I never believed in revenge, I never wanted to believe in it, all my life I've been the good modest humble daughter my father raised me to be, and where did all that lead me? homeless with no family. I'm ready to drink that poison, even if it does kill me, I must make sure Jesse and Benita pay for what they did to me and my father, and of course my unborn child.
"What!" Luther's mum exclaimed, "are you both crazy?". We were all sited at the dining table
I shake my head "No, is true, Luther and I will be leaving soon, I was able to get back my assets, so I have a house and everything now".
She sighs "I get that, but what I don't get is why Luther's leaving with you". I don't say anything, I hear Luther clear his throat
" Well mum, I don't know how to say this but, Violet and I are in a serious relationship". Everywhere becomes so quiet that I heard a cricket
Luther's mum suddenly starts laughing "How is this possible? aren't we all leaving in the same house? what about Lana?".
" Mum, I've decided to follow my heart, and my heart chooses Violet". kind of cringe, but why not.
Lisa hits the table catching our attention "Dad, can I say something?".
I gulp, and Luther responds " sure, go ahead honey".
"Dad if you think I'll be okay with this then you're wrong, I will rather be an orphan than have a blind lady as my stepmother". She runs off
" Lisa!, Lisa!" Luther called but she doesn't answer
"You two better stop whatever this is".
" Moth-" she jumps in
"No, listen, Violet, you seem like a nice girl, and I get everything that happened to you wasn't your fault, yes we helped you and all, but you already got your assets now, you can hire professionals or whatever, leave my family out of your drama, I don't want to hear anything about relationship".
" Mother how can you say something like that, Violet has nothing to do with this, I'm the one who-".
"Shut up!" She yells "Shut up Luther, I don't want to hear you speak. now Violet, I'll help you with your things, so you can leave. not like you owe anything, all the clothes you had on were Lanas".
I stand up and bow to her " I'm sorry for everything, I promise to repay your kindness". She doesn't say anything, I hear her walk away.
Luther sighs "Well, that didn't go well".
"Funny how they suddenly turned against me, I thought we were all getting along well".
"That's family for you, please don't take anything they said to heart, try to understand them, they just need time".
I sigh " I can't help but feel guilty, the relationship is not even real to begin with, even if they finally accept us, we are still deceiving them". Luther takes my hand
"Hey, let me worry about my family okay?".
I smile at him "We haven't even told them about getting engaged and they are already upset, I wonder what will happen when we break the news to them ".
" I'll go grab our things so we can start leaving". I hear his footsteps as he walks away.
JESSE'S POV
Everything was going well, the paparazzi were doing their jobs attacking special guests with their cameras, everyone we invited were at the hall, our cake was tall and beautiful, there were all kinds of food for our guests, our parents were getting along quite well.
Benita walks toward me she wore an emerald green velvet dress, it was long and fitted bringing out her beautiful figure, her hair was tied to a ponytail, she wore diamond earrings she made me buy during our honeymoon, it cost me a fortune.
she speaks with excitement "You see didn't I tell you everything will work out, and Violet is nowhere to be found".
I sigh "is too early to celebrate". Suddenly someone approaches us, Benita instantly grabs my hand.
"Good evening to you both, congratulations on your wedding anniversary". It was the minister, Mr Kendall Mayar, short , balled and overweight and his wife Faith Mayar, who resembles a middle-aged model.
I instantly shake his hand and kiss his wife's "it's a pleasure, thank you for sacrificing your evening for us".
He laughs "No need for that, we are more than happy to attend".
His wife turns Benita " Thank you so much for the perfume, I loved it".
Benita replies with a smile on her face"It's no problem, if you need more you can always call me or swing by the gallery". They both laugh.
The minister pulls me away from them, and whispers "Have you been able to lay your hands on the assets now?".
I gulp " There's been a problem and-"
"We can not afford problems, you know what I want, and if you want your taste in power you better get it for me, or is your dream of taking over businesses isn't still valid? isn't it something you still want?".
" But how are we sure it's among Violet's property?, Why will Mr chad put his only daughter at such risk?".
"Because it's where we would least expect it to be! and his daughter is blind, she wouldn't know what she possesses if she held it in her hand".
Faith suddenly slaps her husband back " Darling there you are, what are you guys whispering about?".
He laughs "Just how lucky I am to have you, my dear".
She giggles " oh stop you". She slaps him on his back again.
Benita walks up to me and whispers in my ear "is time for your speech". I nod
I adjust my black suit and my green tie, I sigh as I walk to the stage, paparazzi start to take pictures, nearly blinding me with their flash, Everyone applause as I take a bow, and someone hands me a mic.
" Good evening everyone, thank you for coming, I appreciate you all for making time. Well, today is my wedding anniversary, two years ago I got to make a huge decision" I bring out a handkerchief, whipping away my fake tear "My wife, died not long before the passing of her father, who she accidentally killed. After her death I thought I would never find love again, not until Benita lit up my world, she supported me all through my hard times, she's been the best wife, even when the world was against our remarriage, even when they tried to pin my wife's death on me she stood by my side, and I love and appreciate her for that, today marks our 2nd year of being husband and wife and I thank-". I see someone raise their hands up
Suddenly all attention turns to the person, it was a lady, a lady wearing a black dress, she also wore a black mask, and she had red lipstick on. Someone hands her a mic.
"I have a question".
I fake a laugh "What might be your question ma'am?".
She smirks "People say it takes at least a year to grieve a spouse, but in your case, it didn't take long at all, be honest with us, did you love your wife?".
I gulp " o-of course I do, I did, I still do".
"Or your new wife is just your way of moving on quickly?".
I instantly reply " Exactly!" The whole crowd gasp "Not, exactly not, I love my new wife, and my old one, I mean, I mean the-"I turn to my side and see Benta making hand gestures I couldn't quite understand
"You seem to be uncomfortable, does my question bother you?".
I fake a chuckle "No, of course not, may I ask who you are please?".
She smiles "Your father in law and wife's death, aren't they to your advantage?, because of that you've become a billionaire".
I clear my throat "I know what the situation looks like, that's why for two years-" she interrupts
"Ahahah, we all know that story, another question, what if your dead wife suddenly appears in front of you? what will you do then?".
I laugh " impossible, she's dead".
"But from what I heard, a body was never buried, why?".
I laugh " it was an explosion, her body might have pieces and-and".
"So instead of burying the pieces, you decided to bury an ID cane, which miraculously survived the blast".
I feel cold sweat on my fore head "Exactly..may I ask, are you a reporter? if you are, which agency do you work for?".
"Why?, Surprised by my questions? is just your story is kind of funny, and also pathetic". She removes her mask, and her hair comes down, my eyes widen when I recognise her "Hello honey, surprise, surprise! guess who's alive!". She starts laughing maniacally.
I turn and I see Benita wearing a horrified look on her face, soon all the paparazzi start to take pictures of her, I release my necktie because I suddenly felt shocked.
