Chapter 10 - Comfort

Damien

Hearing the sobs of my mate made my heart ache, all I wanted to do was wrap her in my arms, hide her away and take her pain away. I kept glancing at her in the rear-view mirror, she looked so broken. We finally arrived at Reign’s home, she jumped out of the car and rushed her way to the police line, but she was stopped by Mac and Duncan. She was fighting hard to get lose but they held her tight. A wave of anger flowed through me, and I ran to her side growling at both men, who released her, and I wrapped my arms around her. “Let me go!” She kept yelling. “Please, KC! I need to find KC!” Who’s KC?” A firefighter asked who was standing next to us. “KC, she’s my furbaby. She was in the house! Please find her.” She sobbed. “KC! C’mere girl, come to momma!” She pleaded trying to whistling for KC. “Mr. McAvoy, may we speak with you?” A fire fighter called. Jaz and Ryott put their arms around her in comfort, I stood behind them and wrapped all three of them in a hug. Slowly Reign sunk to her knees, and we followed. Moses, Jyden, Koltyn and the rest of the team made their way and stood in a circle around us as the media was starting to show up. “Reign,” Mac called her. She looked up at him and his eyes were filled with sadness. “I’m so sorry pumpkin, they found KC’s body, she didn’t make it.” “NO, NO, NO, NO.” She cried out. “Why is this happening?” “Why can’t he just go obsess over someone else?” She whispered. “I’m so sorry.” Jaz said embracing her, trying to sooth her.

Reign tried to stand but was unsteady on her feet. Jaz everything is starting to spin. She fell, and Ryott caught her head before she hit the ground. “Reign!” Jaz shouted. “Get the paramedics!” She growled. “Ry, please open your eyes.” She continued caressing Reign’s cheek. Just as the paramedics started their assessment, she opened her eyes and started crying. She grabbed onto Jaz and held tight. “We should give her a sedative to help her calm down.” One of the medics suggested. I nodded my head in agreement and told Moses what needed to be done, including finding hotel rooms for all of us for at least the next week and half. Everyone, except me, Jaz, Ryott, Shadow, and Reign stayed behind, I sent everyone else to secure the hotel rooms. Reign was reluctant to leave. “Ma’am, you should really go and get some rest, there is nothing you can do here right now. The fire is still smoldering, and you can’t go in until it stops. You can come back tomorrow.” The fire chief said.

“C’mon.” I said. “Let’s get to the hotel and get some rest.” I said holding out my hand for her to take. “Please, let me help you.” I asked her. She slowly took my hand, and I brought her to her feet and wrapped my arm around her waist to help steady her. She looked up at me, her eyes were puffy and red, her cheeks were stained with her tears, I used the pad of my thumb to wipe her tears away. She is going to be my weakness.

“Mac secured the whole top floor of the hotel for us. We can come back in the morning and see if anything is salvageable.” Moses told me as I wiped her tears. Shaking her head, “NO! NO! I can’t leave KC here all alone, she's my baby and I let her down. She was alone when she died, I can’t just leave her here.” She sobbed gripping my shirt. “Please, I can’t leave her alone.” “Okay, sshhh,” I said as I rocked her. “I’ll make sure she’s very well taken care of. I promise.” I assured her. “Shadow, please, make sure KC is properly cremated and that Reign gets her ashes back as soon as possible.” “You got it.” He said giving Reign a quick hug and he walked off towards KC’s covered body. Ryott took Reign’s hand and led her the car. Shadow has been here watching over her, protecting her until I could get here to be with her. He has become very protective of my mate. I trusted him with my life, and I trust him with my mate’s life.

“Damien.” Jaz put her hand on my arm. “You need to prepare yourself for tomorrow, she’s not going to be herself.” “What do you mean?” I asked puzzled. “She’s going to be all business, that’s what she does when she’s hurt, angry and confused. We usually give her space, but we still have a few press meetings and then show on Saturday. You think she’s avoiding you now? It could be worse come tomorrow and the next few days and she's gonna be really feisty. She might avoid you, then again, she might not since you’re her mate.” I glanced at her. “She knows that there’s something between the two of you, she’s confused about her feelings for you. She doesn’t think she’s worthy of you.” Before I could respond Jaz continued. “She’s felt drawn to you since you…since the elevator.” “What?! Of course, she is, if anything, I’m the one not worthy of her. Since the elevator?” Jaz shook her head yes. “When we are done here, we need to tell her the truth. I just can’t believe you never told her about you.” I looked over at her. “I know. We should have told her a long time ago. You should have told her when you realized that she was your mate.” Jaz sighed as we reached the car. Ryott was in the backseat and my love was in the passenger seat. “Also, I think she might be a shifter.”

“What makes you say that?” I curiously asked. “Well, she’s said that she’s been hearing a voice in her head since we picked you up at the airport.” She rubbed her face. “She has no idea what’s going on.” I sighed and rubbed my face. “Get in, let’s get to the hotel, we all need some rest.” I looked over at my beautiful girl and she was sobbing in between crying hiccups. I slid into the driver’s seat, started the engine, and headed for the hotel. Reign sat with her head buried in her hands and then leaned her head on the window and fell asleep. I could feel her fear, anger, sadness and tension radiate off her. “We’ll figure things out later, we first need to get through the next week and half.” I told Jaz through our mind link.

Reign was fast asleep when we parked. Jaz and Ryott tried to wake her, but she didn’t budge, the sedative the paramedics gave her kicked in. I carefully opened the passenger door and lifted her bridal style and carried her to the elevator where my guys were waiting for us. Mac got the whole top floor for us, with one elevator for our use and you had to have a key card to access the top floor and get by the guards standing by the elevator on the bottom and our floor. We were still on high alert, this psycho got to her home, the one place that should have been her safe place. I should have been here from the beginning, but I let my fear of falling for her get in the way, she’s the other half of my soul and my one and only true love. I can’t let her down again. When we got to the room, I laid her down on her bed, she had her arms wrapped around my neck and when I laid her down her grip tightened around me. I chuckled.

“You need to let me go, baby girl.” I whispered in her ear; I felt her shiver. “Please, don’t go.” She softly asked. “I know it’s a lot to ask but…” she trailed off. “It’s not a lot to ask babygirl. I will stay with you as long as you need me too.” I told her. “I will always be here for you and with you.” I cupped her face and placed a gentle kiss on her temple and crawled under the blankets with her. “Thank you.” She said nuzzling closer to me.

Damn this woman is my world, I’ve loved her for three years. Three years that I wasted avoiding her. I could have spent those three years with her, getting to know her and letting her get to know me. Letting her fall in love with me, she would already know the truth about who I really am. What’s done is done, I can’t change it. All we can do is move on and hope that she forgives me. “Good night.” I whispered in her ear, and she sighed as she rested her head against my shoulder. I lifted my arm letting her cuddle up against my side. I finally get to hold her; I’ve been dreaming of this day for three years.

Her heart rate and breathing finally slowed down, she was relaxed and asleep. I needed to sleep but I was just so happy that she was here in my arms, safe and sound. I spent hours watching her sleep, listening to her cute soft snores, playing with her hair just listening to her breath sent sparks through my body. Eventually I drifted off into the darkness called sleep.
