Book 2: The Unexpected Duo: Chapter 9- Vladimir
Finding out the Riss was related to the Faerie bloodline had been interesting to say the least. Myra gnawed on her bottom lip the remainder of the time we had spent with Riss and I could tell she was worried for her. By the time Riss’ foster mom had come to pick her up, I was worried that Myra had bitten a whole in her lip. Myra was hesitant to let Riss out of her sight, but she couldn’t legally keep her from going with her parent, that would be considered kidnapping. I wanted to grab Myra in my arms and tell her everything would be okay, but how could I, when I wasn’t even sure if that was the case, and how could I comfort her, when my vampire wouldn’t even let me get close to her.
“Vladimir,” Myra turned to me after saying goodbye to Riss, a look of defeat in her eyes. “I can’t lose Riss too, I’ve already lost too much.”
“Don’t worry love, we won’t let anything happen to her.” I responded, moving slightly closer to her, holding my breath as I did so, hoping my nearness would be enough to comfort her.
“How can we keep her safe, when we don’t even know who is out to destroy my blood line?” She replied tears building in her eyes.
I reached for her and pulled her in for a hug, fighting my vampire for control the entire time. I’m sure she could sense the effect she was having on me because she pulled away shortly thereafter looking straight up at me. I turned my face, not wanting her to see what her scent had done to me. I was sure I looked more like a monster than I did myself, my fangs extended out, my eyes pure red slits, full of blood lust, veins protruding out of my face.
I felt her hand caress my cheek, as she pulled me to look at her. I tried to detect any emotion in her eyes, expecting her to look at me with fear, except the only emotion I saw was heartbreak.
“I’m sorry.” I responded, not knowing what else to say.
She lifted her lip, making an attempt to smile, “ I always did have a thing for the bad boys.”
I chuckled lightly, Myra really was an incredible person, even in the dark, she manages to bring the light. We walked silently back to Myra’s apartment, both of us lost in our thoughts. When we reached the stairs to her apartment, I stopped walking, causing Myra to pause on the first step and look back at me.
“I don’t mind you staying with me,” she responded, “I feel safer with you near by.”
“Even when I’m battling my Vampire, trying to will him not to drain you dry.”
“You have more control than you give yourself credit for.” Myra replied looking down at me sadly.
“I’m glad at least one of us has confidence.” I chuckled dryly.
“So are you coming up?” Myra asked, her eyes pleading for me to join her.
“For a minute.” I responded. “I have a contact in Naperville, who might have some answers about your family, and also on how to get rid of this curse.”
“How would they know more than you?” Myra asked as she continued to walk up the stairs towards her apartment with me walking closely behind her.
I had promised my contact that I would never let anyone know about them and their knowledge they contained as it could put them in immediate danger, but Myra was my mate. I wasn’t willing to keep anything from her, even if it meant betraying the trust of an old friend. We walked into Myra’s apartment and she walked over to her kitchen to get started on making dinner. She busied herself chopping vegetables while she waited for me to answer her question. I let out a heavy sigh, I hated going back on my word, but this was necessary.
“I wasn’t completely truthful with you yesterday when I told you the history about the curse on my people.” I watched as Myra looked up from her vegetables, anger shimmering in her eyes, but still she didn’t interrupt me, “I wasn’t the last child born by Vampires. There was one more. She was born two years after the curse. She was conceived by a female vampire and a male faerie.” Myra looked up at me her eyes widening in surprise as she continued to chop. “Myra, please watch what you’re doing.” I chided her.
“Don’t worry about me,” She growled out, “I’ve been chopping things since I was young, just continue with your story.”
I rolled my eyes at her, she could be hotheaded at times, even though, I knew I deserved it this time. “Her mother slaughtered her father, shortly after they consummated their mating bond. They were in the process of marking each other, and the moment the male faeries blood touched her lips, she couldn’t stop drinking from him. He died in her arms and left her with a broken heart and the knowledge that she had killed her mate. Later she found out a broken heart wasn’t the only thing he left her with. She had been feeling ill and went to a human hospital, as she hadn’t returned to the clan after she slaughtered her mate. The humans ran multiple tests on her, eventually the came back and told her she was pregnant. When she told them that was impossible, they performed an ultrasound on her, and sure enough she was pregnant, with a little girl, a miracle. The female went into hiding, afraid that if the other vampires found her they would slaughter her and her child. She was alone when she gave birth to her daughter, the first vampire faerie hybrid. Her daughter was different from both fae and vampire children. Her hair was as white as snow, one of her eyes were blood red like a vampires once they’ve taken over their human counterpart, her other eye a light shade of lilac, a color that’s only seen on faerie kind. The vampire and her daughter lived in secret for many years. They lived solitude the girl’s entire life, but my father somehow found out about her existence and sent an army to capture her and her mother. Her mother sacrificed herself to save her daughter. When I took over as King, I found a book in my father’s study where he had gathered information about her. I took the book with me and I went in search of the girl, who was now a woman. When I found her, I was shocked by her appearance. She wasn’t a hideous monster that my father had described in his writings, instead she was a beautiful woman, who had been gathering information for years about her father’s family. While the her father’s relatives hated the girl’s mother they couldn’t find themselves to hate her as she was part her father. I took the girl back to the palace with me and I kept her hidden away from danger for years. She shared with me the information she had gathered from the curse, and the knowledge she’d obtained about the faerie race. After many years together we went our separate ways. I had to protect my kingdom and she wanted to learn more about our past, but we remained close friends and stayed in contact.”
Myra had stopped chopping while I was talking, starring at me, engrossed in my tale. “She was your lover wasn’t she?” Myra asked the smallest hint of jealousy in her voice.
“Yes,” I responded, not wanting to lie to her, “But that was a very long time ago. The only thing between us was our carnal desire and the need to find out more about the past.”
“What’s her name?” Myra asked, noticing that I hadn’t mentioned it.
“Esmeralda.” I responded, starring into Myra’s eyes to see if she recognized the name.
“One of my elders, when they were visiting me in my dreams, told me of a terrible abomination, telling me that Esmeralda, the vampire hybrid, would bring destruction upon us. But the Esmeralda you’re describing sounds nothing like the woman my elder described.”
“Only her father’s family tolerated her, the other faeries, couldn’t stand the sight of her, a hybrid who had the strength of the vampire and the magic of a fae. They wanted her dead, but Faerie law prevented them from killing her, a fae cannot take another fae’s life.”
“So you’re going to see her tonight?” Myra asked looking away from me as she started cutting her vegetables again.
“Yes, I think she could be the only one with the knowledge to help us.”
Myra let out a quiet hiss, and then the delicious, smell of Myra’s blood hit me.
