Chapter 125
The eerie stillness of the night was what woke me. At first, I thought it was just a bad dream, a shadow of paranoia lingering from Jake’s harsh words earlier. But there was something else—an unmistakable heaviness in the air, like the quiet before a storm. My heart began to pound, my wolf restless beneath my skin. Something wasn’t right.
I swung my legs over the bed, pulling on a light robe as I crept toward the door. The hallway was quiet, the packhouse wrapped in the kind of silence that felt unnatural. As I neared the nursery, the faintest noise—a shuffle—set my nerves ablaze.
I froze, straining to hear. There it was again, like someone deliberately trying to move quietly. My breath hitched. Without thinking, I pushed the door open just enough to peer inside.
The sight sent a jolt of terror through me. A dark-cloaked figure stood by the twins’ cribs, their posture predatory.
“No!” I burst into the room, my voice trembling with both fear and fury. “Get away from them!”
The figure turned sharply, startled by my sudden appearance. Beneath the hood, I could see little more than the glint of their eyes. Whoever they were, they didn’t belong here, and I wasn’t about to let them harm the twins.
I lunged forward, putting myself between the intruder and the cribs. My wolf howled within me, ready to fight, but I knew the odds were against me. I was an omega—physically weaker, lacking the kind of training others had. But I couldn’t let that stop me.
The intruder moved toward me, and I lashed out with a ferocity I didn’t know I had. My claws extended instinctively, swiping at them, but they were fast, dodging easily.
“You’re a fool,” they snarled, their voice low and venomous.
“And you’re trespassing,” I shot back, baring my teeth.
The fight was clumsy on my part. I managed a few scratches, enough to stagger them slightly, but they were stronger, more experienced. A heavy blow to my side sent me sprawling against the wall. My vision blurred for a moment, but I forced myself to stand, staggering back to my feet.
“You won’t touch them!” I growled, my wolf lending me strength I didn’t know I possessed.
The sound of footsteps in the hallway was my only warning before the nursery door slammed open, and Jake burst in, radiating pure fury.
“Alpha!” The intruder stiffened, momentarily distracted. That was all Jake needed.
He moved like a predator, closing the distance in seconds and striking with precision. The intruder didn’t stand a chance. In a flurry of motion, Jake had them pinned to the floor, one massive hand around their throat.
“Who are you, and why are you here?” Jake’s voice was deadly calm, but his eyes burned with rage.
The intruder choked, clawing at Jake’s hand. “I... I’m a worker,” they gasped. “In the packhouse.”
Jake’s grip tightened. “Why were you in this room?”
The figure whimpered under his hold. “The twins... I heard the Luna talking about them... about powers. I thought... I thought I could take them, ransom them. I swear, that’s all!”
My stomach dropped. This was my fault. The conversation I had with Sophie and Fatima earlier flashed through my mind. How could I have been so careless?
Jake’s head snapped toward me, his expression murderous.
“You,” he growled, his voice like a whip. “This is your doing?”
“I—I didn’t mean—” I stammered, but he cut me off.
“Enough!” he roared, releasing the intruder just long enough for two guards to haul them away.
The silence that followed was suffocating. Jake turned to me, his face a mask of cold fury.
“You put them in danger,” he said, his voice low and deadly.
“I didn’t know—”
“You didn’t think,” he snapped. “And because of that, someone tried to take them. My children. My pack’s future.”
The weight of his words crushed me. The way he looked at me with so much hatred ,I felt like sinking through the floor and just disappearing, but it was what came next that truly shattered me.
“And you—” his eyes scanned me, something sharp and accusing in his gaze “—are a liar.”
I blinked, confused. “What?”
“Your eyes,” he spat, his voice laced with disgust. “You’re an omega.”
My heart stopped. He knew. Being an omega meant I was beneath everyone ,it was what made me think I would never get a mate, especially the second time. omegas were rejected and hated by their pack sometimes, even by their own mates . I was lucky I was never rejected the first time, but now... Jake had rejected me the very first time he found out we were mates are just didn't have the strength to say it.
Jake stepped closer, his towering presence overwhelming. “You should have told me the moment you arrived,” he said, each word like a knife. “Do you think I would have agreed to let you be Luna if I’d known? A weak omega, tasked with leading this pack?”
“I didn’t lie!” I protested, tears stinging my eyes.
“You didn’t tell the truth,” he countered, his voice cold. “And now I know why. You’re not fit for this role. You never were.”
His words were a dagger to my chest.
“I’m trying,” I said, my voice breaking. “I’m doing everything I can to—”
“To what?” he interrupted, his tone mocking. “To replace her? To make yourself the mother of my children? Is that what this is about?”
“No!” I cried. “I’m just trying to protect them.”
“The only danger to them is you and your delusions,” he said harshly. “From now on, stay away from them.”
His words hit me like a blow.
“You can’t mean that,” I whispered, my voice trembling.
“I do,” he said without hesitation. “You’re banned from the nursery. From their lives. You’ll regret this, Ayla.”
I stared at him, my chest heaving. I felt like I could just die.
