Chapter 178
The night air was heavy, thick with the kind of silence that made my skin crawl. Ever since the attack on the twins’ room, I hadn’t been able to rest properly. Something was off in the packhouse, and I could feel it in my bones.
I paced the room, arms crossed tightly over my chest as my mind reeled over everything that had happened in the past few days. The failed kidnapping attempt, Jake finally agreeing to take the twins' safety seriously, and the ever-present tension between us.
And then there was the dream.
Prisca’s voice had been clearer than ever, guiding me, warning me. But about what?
I needed answers.
I exhaled heavily, glancing at the sleeping twins. Their soft breaths filled the space, a reminder of why I couldn’t afford to be careless. I reached for a blanket, tucking it around them before stepping away.
That’s when I saw it.
The smallest draft of air… coming from the far wall of the room.
My eyes narrowed. That didn’t make sense.
The room was closed—windows locked, doors sealed, guards posted outside. So why was there a cold breeze coming from inside the room?
Carefully, I stepped closer, running my fingers along the wooden panels. The wall was smooth, solid—until it wasn’t.
I pressed against a specific part, and a faint *click* echoed in the room.
I stumbled back as a section of the wall creaked open, revealing a narrow passage leading into complete darkness.
My heart pounded.
I should wake Jake. I should call someone. But something inside me told me this was meant for me to see.
Grabbing a lantern from the bedside table, I took a deep breath and stepped inside.
The passage was cold, the stone walls damp as I moved cautiously forward. The further I went, the more uneasy I felt. This wasn’t just some old storage tunnel—this was built for secrecy.
After several minutes, I reached a dead end. My fingers traced over the rough surface of the wall, searching—until I found it. A carved symbol, faint but unmistakable.
A crescent moon and a dagger.
I inhaled sharply.
That was not a good sign.
Before I could think further, a voice echoed from behind me.
“You weren’t supposed to find this.”
I spun around, my heart nearly leaping out of my chest.
A figure stood at the entrance of the passage—a man, cloaked in a dark robe, his face partially hidden by the shadows.
Instinctively, I took a step back, my fingers tightening around the lantern.
“Who are you?” I demanded, my voice steadier than I felt.
The man chuckled, the sound cold and distant. “You ask the wrong question, Luna.”
My breath caught at the title.
He knew who I was.
He stepped forward, and in the dim glow of the lantern, I caught sight of his face. Sharp cheekbones, piercing silver eyes, and a scar that ran from his temple to his jaw.
“I am someone who knows the truth,” he continued, his gaze never leaving mine. “And I am here to warn you.”
I swallowed hard. “About what?”
“The twins.” His voice dropped lower, almost a whisper. “They are in more danger than you realize.”
I felt a chill run down my spine.
“You need to explain more because everyone keeps saying that its not news,” I said, keeping my stance firm even as my stomach twisted with unease.
The man exhaled, tilting his head slightly. “There are forces moving against them—against you. The attack on their room was only the beginning. Your mate knows this kind of danger has happened before but there is a way to completely stop these threats. He knows what he has to do he has lost a child before. The question is ,is he willing to sacrifice what he couldn't sacrifice before for these twins"
I clenched my jaw, what was this man talking about I am sure if Jake knew how to completely stop this he would have a long time ago. “What do you mean he knows?Who is behind it?”
His silver eyes darkened. “That is something you will have to uncover yourself. But know this… those who see the twins as a threat will not stop. And they are closer than you think.”
My grip on the lantern tightened. “Why should I believe you?”
His lips curved into a knowing smirk. “Because I know who you are up against. I know you Ayla Aria Maynard”
My breath hitched.
He leaned in slightly, his voice barely above a whisper.
“And I know why you are his second chance mate.”
The air felt thick, suffocating. My mind raced, trying to process his words.
Me being Jake's second chance had always been a mystery—an accident, some of us believed. But deep down, I had always known there was more to the story.
I swallowed, forcing myself to stay calm. “Tell me.”
The man glanced over his shoulder, as if sensing something unseen. When he turned back to me, his expression was grave.
“I don’t have time for that now,” he said. “But you must prepare yourself, Luna. The truth is far worse than you can imagine.”
A shiver ran down my spine.
He took a step back into the shadows. “We will meet again. And when we do, you will have a choice to make.”
Before I could say another word, he vanished into the darkness.
I stood frozen for several moments, my heart pounding in my chest.
What the hell had just happened?
Taking a shaky breath, I turned and rushed back through the passage, my mind spinning.
When I finally reached the twins' room, I sealed the hidden door, my hands trembling.
I needed to tell someone.
Sophie. Fatima. Even Jake.
I needed to do something.
But as I looked at the sleeping twins, so small and innocent, I realized one thing.
Whatever was coming…
I wasn’t ready.
But I would be ready.
