Chapter 53

“I am not going anywhere with you!” I exclaimed, my eyes wide. After everything I had endured, I couldn’t just give it all up without a fight.
He groaned, running a frustrated hand through his tousled hair. “I thought you didn’t want me to kill your friend?”
“Stop threatening her! Fatima has nothing to do with this! Leave her out of it,” I growled, my anger flaring. The last thing I wanted was for her to be involved in this twisted game.
“I wouldn’t have to threaten her if you’d just come with me willingly,” he replied, his tone dripping with boredom as if my defiance was nothing more than an inconvenience.
I felt the urge to slap him again, the heat of my anger surging through me. “I’ve built my life here! I have friends, a house, and a job. Why can’t you just stay out of my life without bothering me?” I shot back, my voice tinged with desperation.
He stepped closer, his presence overwhelming. “You knew what you were doing when you ran away with my child. You knew it would all end one day—sooner or later. But you knew this little dream of yours would fade away. Unfortunately for you, your little fantasy ends here. I am your mate and your Alpha—you will not disobey me again.” His voice was firm, his eyes sharp, daring me to challenge him.
A sense of dread washed over me. I didn’t have a choice; if I was selfish, I would tell him off right now and let him kill Fatima or anyone else as long as I got away. But I wasn’t that person. “Fine, I will come with you. Just don’t hurt anyone else, please.”
He nodded, a glint of satisfaction in his eyes. “I promise I won’t kill your little friends.”
“They are not just my little friends; they are my family!” I shot back, my heart aching at the thought of leaving them behind.
“I am your family,” he stated matter-of-factly. “That baby you’re carrying is your family, and our pack is your family. Those humans are not your family; they will never be anything but food and a waste of oxygen.” Disgust dripped from his words.
I gasped in horror. “You are a monster! I hate you!” How could anyone say something like that?
“I am a monster?” he echoed, a cold smile playing on his lips. “And what does that make you? You are not supposed to be anywhere near these humans. It’s better if you leave right now before you endanger them.” His expression was blank, but the threat hung heavy in the air.
He was right about one thing; my presence endangered all my friends and my new family. My being here had already led to Mrs. Rosa’s death. I had to leave as soon as possible before anyone else got hurt because of me.
Once I reluctantly agreed to return with him, his beta, Chris, took my bags, and we headed downstairs. Outside the apartment complex, two sleek silver SUV trucks waited for us. I couldn’t believe it—he had found me, and now everything was over. I felt a lone tear slide down my cheek, and I sniffed, overwhelmed.
“Why are you crying?” Jake asked, his tone flat. I looked up at him, noting his disinterested demeanor. Jerk!
I ignored him and quickened my pace toward the vehicles. As I approached one of the trucks where Chris was loading my bags, I suddenly heard Fatima scream my name.
“Wait! Prisca! Don’t you dare!” she shouted, her voice frantic as she sprinted toward me. She was dressed in a black sweater, blue denim jeans, and brown sandals, her hair tied up in a loose, messy bun.
I paused as she ran into me, wrapping her arms around me tightly. The embrace was so fierce it actually hurt a little. “Okay, okay—too tight, baby! You’re squeezing my tummy!” As soon as I mentioned the baby, she released me quickly.
“I cannot believe you were about to leave without saying goodbye!” she exclaimed, crossing her arms in a huff. “I was on my way upstairs, but when I got there, you weren’t there. I could have sworn I heard someone talking in your apartment.”
I blinked, caught off guard. “Uh, I guess you missed us by a couple of seconds. I’m glad I—” A growl cut me off before I could finish my statement. This time it wasn’t Jake; he was busy on his phone, his back turned to us. I looked behind Fatima and widened my eyes when I saw Chris sniffing her neck, his eyes glowing an intense shade of orange, and his canines extended like sharp daggers.
“Mate,” he growled, his voice low and predatory. Fatima screamed, the sound piercing through the tension in the air.
“What the hell, dude? Are you crazy? Did you just growl at me?” she exclaimed, trying to pull away from him, but he grabbed her waist, holding her firmly in place.
“Oh shit,” I muttered, watching in disbelief as my best friend struggled against the beta’s grip. I didn’t know what to do in this situation. If I intervened, it would create a dramatic scene we didn’t need right now.
“Oh shit indeed,” Jake said beside me, observing the new pair with an amused expression. I rolled my eyes at him. Of course he found this amusing; he was an utter idiot.
Chris didn’t let go of Fatima, who was now looking at me wide-eyed, her fear palpable. “What is happening?” she asked, glancing back and forth between me and Chris.
“Uh, I think he just realized you’re his mate,” I replied hesitantly, trying to keep my tone light despite the chaos unfolding.
Chris leaned closer, his face a mix of confusion and desire as he inhaled her scent. “You smell like her,” he murmured, almost to himself. “Why didn’t I notice it before?”
“Notice what?” Fatima asked, her voice shaky. “What do you mean, mate? I don’t even know you!”
His eyes flickered with a mix of possessiveness and intrigue. “You’re mine,” he said simply, as if that explained everything.
“Excuse me? I don’t think so!” she retorted, trying to push him away, but he held firm.
I could feel the tension in the air, thick and charged. “Chris, let her go!” I called out, my heart racing. This wasn’t how I wanted my friends to be pulled into this world of chaos.
Jake stepped forward, his amusement fading as he took in the situation. “Chris, she’s not your plaything. Give her some space,” he ordered, his voice carrying the weight of authority.
Chris hesitated, his grip loosening just enough for Fatima to wriggle free. She stumbled back, her eyes darting between us as if trying to grasp the unfolding reality. “What the hell is happening? I just came to check on you, and now there’s a psycho trying to claim me?”
“It’s complicated,” I said, my voice steady despite the chaos. “Chris is a beta wolf, and it seems he’s found his mate in you. But it doesn’t have to be like this.”
“Doesn’t have to be what? Some kind of weird mating ritual?” Fatima exclaimed, crossing her arms defiantly. “I don’t want to be claimed by anyone, especially not a growling lunatic!”
I couldn’t help but stifle a laugh at her fierce spirit. “That’s the thing with mates—it’s not just about claiming. There’s a bond, a connection. But it’s new for him, and it’s overwhelming. You just have to give him time to adjust.”
Chris looked at Fatima, his expression softening slightly. “I didn’t mean to scare you. I just—” He paused, searching for the right words. “I felt something when I sniffed your neck. It’s hard to explain.”
Fatima raised an eyebrow, her fear slowly shifting to curiosity. “You could say that again. So, you’re telling me I’m stuck with him now? Because that’s definitely not happening.”
Jake chuckled, his usual cool demeanor returning. “You may not have a choice, Fatima. But if it helps, Chris isn’t as bad as he seems. He’s just... enthusiastic.”
I shot him a glare. “That’s one way to put it.”
“Let’s not forget, Prisca,” Jake continued, “you have your own issues to deal with. I didn’t come here to babysit.”
“Fine! I’ll deal with my issues once I get back to the pack,” I snapped, irritation bubbling beneath the surface. “But right now, I’m not leaving my friends behind, especially when they are being dragged into this mess.”
“Your friends are not your concern anymore. You belong with your pack, and that’s the end of it.” His voice was firm, and I could see he wouldn’t budge on this.
“Why can’t you understand that this is my choice? I’m not going to abandon them,” I argued, my heart pounding in my chest.
“Because you don’t see the bigger picture!” he shouted, frustration etched across his face. “Your presence puts everyone at risk. You’re carrying my child, and that’s what matters now.”
“I know what matters!” I snapped back
