Chapter 136

The morning sunlight streamed through the nursery windows, casting a warm glow over the room as I sat on the floor with Lily and Logan. Their giggles filled the air, and despite the ache in my chest from my last conversation with Jake, I couldn’t help but smile. Being with the twins was the only thing that gave me peace now. They didn’t judge or lash out. They didn’t push me away. They simply existed in their innocent, joyful world, and I was grateful to be a part of it.

Today was bath day, and I had everything set up: warm water in the tub, towels neatly folded, and a small bottle of lavender-scented baby soap. Logan crawled toward the tub, babbling incoherently, while Lily followed with a determined look, her tiny fists clutching the edge of the tub as she tried to pull herself up.

“All right, you two,” I said with a laugh, scooping them both up. “One at a time. You’re not running this show.”

Logan went first, splashing the water with glee as I lathered him up. His little hands slapped the surface, sending water droplets everywhere, and I couldn’t help but laugh. Once he was clean, I wrapped him in a soft towel and set him on the changing table while I brought Lily into the water.

She was more curious, her chubby fingers exploring the bubbles I created with the soap. Her giggles were contagious, and for a moment, the weight of everything else in my life seemed to lift.

Then something incredible happened.

As I rinsed Lily’s hair, a cluster of bubbles floated above her head, shimmering in the sunlight. I blinked, thinking it was just the breeze from the open window, but then the bubbles began to move—upward, spinning and twirling in a way that was far too deliberate to be natural.

“Lily...” I whispered, my heart pounding.

She giggled again, clapping her hands, and the bubbles floated higher, swirling around the room like tiny, magical orbs. Logan, now on the floor beside the tub, pointed at the bubbles with wide eyes, his laughter joining his sister’s.

I stared in awe, my hands frozen in the water. It was beautiful and strange, and it sent a chill down my spine.

“Lily, how are you doing that?” I asked softly, even though I knew she wouldn’t answer.

The bubbles continued to dance until, with a soft pop, they disappeared one by one. The twins looked delighted, their laughter filling the room, but I felt a wave of panic settle over me.

I dried Lily off and dressed her quickly, my mind racing. If anyone found out about this—about their powers—they’d be in danger. There was already talk of them being “abominations,” whispers of their existence being unnatural. If those people knew about this, about what Lily could do...

I couldn’t let that happen.

Once the twins were settled for their nap, I sat in the rocking chair, my hands trembling as I tried to process what I’d just seen. I wanted to tell Jake, to make him understand that the twins were special and needed protection. But after how he’d treated me, I knew he wouldn’t listen. He’d think I was making it up, just like he thought about the vision of Prisca.

No, this wasn’t something I could handle alone.

I needed help.

Sophie and Fatima were the only ones I could trust. They had always been by my side, offering support and encouragement even when I doubted myself. If anyone could help me protect the twins, it was them.

I found Sophie and Fatima in the kitchen, chatting over cups of tea. Their laughter faded as soon as they saw me, concern flashing in their eyes.

“What’s wrong?” Sophie asked, setting her mug down.

I took a deep breath, trying to steady my voice. “I need to tell you something, but you have to promise not to tell anyone else. Not even Jake.”

Fatima raised an eyebrow. “This sounds serious.”

“It is,” I said, sitting down across from them. “It’s about the twins.”

Their expressions grew even more serious, and Sophie leaned forward. “What about them?”

I hesitated, glancing around to make sure no one else was listening. Then I told them everything—about the bath, the bubbles, and how they floated in the air as if guided by an unseen force.

When I finished, there was a long silence. I braced myself for disbelief, for laughter, for anything that would dismiss what I’d seen.

But instead, Sophie nodded slowly. “That’s... incredible.”

“You believe me?” I asked, my voice trembling.

“Of course we do,” Fatima said, her tone firm. “We’ve always known the twins were special. This just proves it.”

I felt a surge of relief, my eyes welling with tears. “I don’t know what to do. If anyone finds out about this...”

“They won’t,” Sophie said firmly. “We won’t let that happen.”

Fatima reached across the table, taking my hand in hers. “You’re not alone in this, Ayla. We’ll protect them together.”

Their support was like a lifeline, pulling me out of the sea of fear and uncertainty that had been drowning me. I wasn’t alone. I didn’t have to bear this burden by myself.

“We’ll figure this out,” Sophie said, her voice filled with determination. “The twins are the future of this pack, whether people like it or not. And we’ll make sure they have the chance to grow up and fulfill that destiny.”

I nodded, my resolve strengthening. Prisca’s words echoed in my mind: They are special. They are the future. You must protect them.

With Sophie and Fatima by my side, I knew I could do just that.

We spent the rest of the evening brainstorming ways to keep the twins safe, from strengthening security around the nursery to being more vigilant about who had access to them.

But as I lay in bed that night, staring at the ceiling, I couldn’t shake the feeling that this was just the beginning. The twins’ powers were only starting to show, and with them would come new challenges, new threats.

I closed my eyes, praying for strength and guidance.

No matter what it took, I would protect them. I owed it to them, to Prisca, and to myself.

Because they weren’t just the future of the pack. They were my family, and I would do whatever it took to keep them safe.
