Chapter 176

The packhouse had never felt this tense before. Warriors moved in and out of the main halls, security was on high alert, and whispers followed me wherever I went. Ever since the attack on the twins, things had changed. The pack was afraid, and Jake—Jake was furious.

He had been working nonstop, investigating, interrogating, and making sure every single security measure was doubled. He barely slept. I wasn’t sure if he even ate. He was always moving, always planning, and always avoiding me.

But I wasn’t going to be ignored. People acted like I was weak especially after they found out I was an omega ,they thought they could just lock me up and make me a babysitter instead. Whenever I tried talking to Jake he acted all busy and asked how the twins were. The worst part was Fatima and Sophie also thought it was best I don't get in harms way. They didn't say straight up but it's the way they tried to make sure I was occupied indoors like some housewife.

If he thought I was just going to sit in my room and let him handle this alone, he was mistaken. These were my babies too. Maybe not by blood, but in every way that mattered. And if someone wanted to hurt them, I was going to find out who.

So when I overheard Jake talking to Chris about going to an undisclosed location to follow a lead, I made a decision.

I was going to follow him. Maybe if I knew what was happening I could actually help, but they wouldn't let me so I had to do this the hard way...sneaky way. They would thank me later .

Sneaking out of the packhouse was easier than I expected. With security focused on the outer perimeter, no one paid attention to a single figure slipping through the back. I pulled my hoodie tighter around me, keeping my footsteps light as I made my way toward the forest.

Jake was already ahead, moving quickly with Chris at his side. They were speaking in hushed voices, their pace steady but cautious. I kept my distance, making sure to stay hidden in the trees as I followed.

The deeper we went, the more I realized this wasn’t just some routine investigation. This was serious.

Finally, Jake and Chris stopped near an old, abandoned cabin. It looked like it had been untouched for years, but I knew better. People had been here. Recently.

I crouched behind a thick tree, watching as Jake signaled to Chris. They moved carefully, their wolves on high alert.

Then, the door creaked open.

A man stepped out. He was older, with a scar running down his cheek and sharp, calculating eyes. He smirked when he saw Jake.

“I was wondering when you’d come,” he said.

Jake’s stance remained firm, unreadable. “You have information. Talk.”

The man chuckled. “Straight to the point. I like that.”

Chris growled. “Enough games.”

The man raised his hands in surrender. “Fine, fine. I hear things, Alpha. And what I’ve heard… well, let’s just say you have a much bigger problem than you think.”

My breath caught in my throat.

Jake didn’t flinch. “Explain.”

The man stepped closer. “The attack on your pups? That was just a test. The real plan… that’s still coming.”

My heart pounded.

Jake’s jaw tightened. “Who’s behind it?”

The man smirked. “Now, that’s the real question, isn’t it?”

Before he could say anything else, a loud snap echoed through the trees.

And it came from my direction.

My body froze.

Jake’s head whipped toward me, his sharp blue eyes locking onto my hiding spot instantly.

Damn it.

The man followed Jake’s gaze, his smirk widening. “Well, well. Seems you brought company.”

Jake didn’t hesitate. He moved so fast I barely had time to react before he was right in front of me, gripping my arm.

“What the hell are you doing here?” he hissed.

I swallowed hard. “I—”

“Shit,” Chris muttered. “We need to go. Now.”

I barely had time to process what was happening before I heard the rustling of leaves. More footsteps. More figures emerging from the shadows.

We were surrounded.

Jake cursed under his breath. “Ayla, stay behind me.”

I wanted to argue, but there wasn’t time. The enemy had arrived.

The first attack came fast—a blur of motion, a flash of silver. Jake dodged easily, slamming his fist into the attacker’s stomach. Chris took down another, his movements precise and deadly.

But they just kept coming.

I fought too, using everything I had learned, dodging, kicking, throwing punches. I wasn’t as strong as a warrior, but I wasn’t weak either.

Then, I felt it—a presence behind me.

Before I could react, a hand gripped my throat, yanking me backward.

I gasped, struggling against the iron grip. The man holding me chuckled darkly.

“Alpha,” he taunted, “call off your men, or I snap her neck.”

Jake turned, his wolf flashing dangerously in his eyes. His entire body radiated rage.

“Let. Her. Go.”

The man tightened his grip. “Drop your weapons. All of you.”

For a second, I thought Jake might actually do it. His fists clenched at his sides, his breathing heavy.

But then I saw something else in his eyes.

A plan.

Before I could process what was happening, Jake moved.

Faster than I had ever seen before.

One second, I was in the man’s grip. The next, Jake was there, his claws ripping through my captor’s chest. Blood splattered. The man let out a strangled gurgle before collapsing.

I stumbled forward, coughing, gasping for breath.

Jake grabbed my shoulders, his grip firm. “Are you okay?”

I nodded shakily. “Yeah.”

Chris took down the last enemy, wiping his blade clean. “We need to go before more show up.”

Jake nodded, but his eyes never left me.

His hands tightened on my shoulders. “We’ll talk about this later,” he said, his voice low and full of warning.

I didn’t argue.

Because for the first time in a long time, I wasn’t sure I wanted to hear what he had to say.
