Part B: Chapter 39

The next two days went by in a blur with Carter training me harder than Ivan did.

“Why are you doing this to me? Don’t you have work or something to do?” I huffed as I collapsed onto the floor. “I’m only human you know.”

Carter laughed as he sat down next to me on the floor. “You aren’t just any human, you are the Luna and frankly that distinguishes you from everyone out there,” he said and then nudged my leg with his. “I have to train you to be the best, not that you can come close to me or Aidan but if you can beat Shelly and Ivan then that means I’ve done my job.”

I rolled my head to the side so that I was looking at him. “No seriously, don’t you have work and what happened to Ivan training me? I prefer him over you any day.”
“And that’s why I’m here,” he replied with an eye roll. “We can’t have you slacking off with Ivan all the time.”

“Hey, we did not slack off,” I protested, my chest heaving up and down so much. I was so tired. We trained from six in the morning to six in the evening and every time all I could do when I got back was flop on the bed and I only woke up when Aidan lifted me and asked me to join him for a shower and even that took a lot of effort on my part. “All I need is to sleep for an entire week but I know someone won’t let me do that.”

Carter nudged my leg again, “of course I won’t let you do that. We are fast approaching the mating ceremony and you my dear need to be in the best shape for what’s to come otherwise you both have to try again next year,” he said seriously. “I don’t think Aidan will be happy about it and he will blame it all on me if it doesn’t go as planned.”

Using the last bit of strength I had, I moved myself so that I was on my side but I felt every muscle in my body ache. “What happens at these things anyway?”

Carter smirked, “I can’t tell you that otherwise I’ll ruin the fun,” he responded with a shrug. “But I can tell you this, it’s going to be the best week of my life, that I can assure you.”

“Why won’t you tell me anything? It’s not like I’m asking about your deepest darkest secret or anything,” I said with a huff. “Just tell me.”

“And break a long standing tradition? Hell no,” he said and then stood up, his hand outstretched to help me up. “Come on, let’s get you something to eat before Aidan decides to have my head for not taking good care of you.”

I sighed loudly which made him laugh but I took his hand and he lifted me up with ease. “I want to say I hate you for everything you are putting me through and all this suspense but that won’t change anything.”

“Darn right it won’t,” he replied as he walked out of the training room and I followed after him. Outside, a table had been set and there were two plates covered. “Have a seat and eat up.”

I rolled my eyes as I sat down and opened the plate that was in front of me. “I’ll try my best or maybe I won’t and let Aidan have your head,” I replied looking at the french toast, eggs and bacon with a glass of orange juice that were sitting in front of me. My mouth watered at the aroma.

“Ha, with that look on your face, Aidan will be thanking me for taking care of you.” He grabbed the orange juice and drank most of it before he picked up a slice of bacon and ate it. “Besides, have you seen how skinny you look, you need more meat on those bones otherwise you may just collapse for me in the process.”

I ate, though I really wasn’t hungry. All I wanted was sleep but that didn’t seem like it was something Carter would allow me to have. “Can I ask you something?”

“Shoot, as long it doesn’t involve the mating ceremony then I shall gladly answer all your questions.” He said through a mouthful of bacon and eggs. His once filled plate was now almost empty.

“What do you know about the prophecy?”

“Remind me what kind of prophecy you are talking about.”

“The one about the end of all lycanthropes as we know it.”

“Oh no, don’t tell me Ivan fed you that crap as well,” he said, wiping his mouth with a napkin and finishing up his juice. “That’s all just a load of crap and children's stories that were told growing up that were meant to scare us.”

“But I’ve seen the book where it’s written and I don’t think it’s just some children’s story.” I don’t know why I was suddenly bringing it up but I guess I just needed to have my mind away from what had actually been troubling me. “What if all of it is true and we may all die because none of us wanted to take it seriously enough to look into it?”

Sighing, Carter placed his elbows on the table and interlaced his fingers. “Look, if all that crap is true then we are all going to die because we don’t know what this thing that is meant to kill is or who this supposed saviour is,” he replied seriously. “If we can’t find the so-called saviour, much less try and convince them to help us, if they don’t already know about the prophecy then we are still going to die. It won’t matter if the saviour has already died anyway.”

“What if everything happens once the saviour is awoken?”

“Awoken from what?”

I shrugged, “I don’t know. The book didn’t really say much about any of it.” I went back to eating while Carter pondered what I had just said. “Maybe we can try and get more information about everything so that we can be fully prepared.”

“If it worries you that much then I will have a look for you and try to ask the Oracle if it can tell us something about it,” he finally said which seemed to require a lot of effort. “But I’m not promising you anything because the Oracle only shows up whenever it has information for us, not the other way around.”

“I didn’t know there was such a thing as an Oracle anyway.” I finished up my food and picked up a napkin, using it to wipe my mouth and hands. “I can live with that.”

“Good, but first I need to have a talk with Ivan for feeding you with such nonsense in the first place.” He stood up. “Back to training, you have to walk the food off so that you don’t throw up all over the training mats else I will have to make you clean it up.” I stood up and we went for a walk around the estate.
