Part C: Chapter 65
Sean, Carter and I were in my house as I showed Sean what I had found two days ago. I needed to go with my gut and that meant trusting him with such information. Whatever this prophecy all of them had been talking about was going to affect all of us and I needed to let him in on everything.
“What do you think?” I asked as I watched him read the papers with a serious expression.
Sean hummed as he continued reading the papers.
“Do you think it was wise to show him that?” Carter asked as he walked over and stood next to me. “Remember what he did.”
I shrugged, ‘I’m going with my gut on this and trusting him despite everything that has happened between us,” I replied. “And weren’t you the one who said I needed to have more than you and Mal look over it to ensure that I hadn’t missed anything?”
Carter sighed, “yeah but I meant someone like Ivan or something not him.”
“I can hear that Carter,” Sean said, “and for your information, I have a good eye for such things which I doubt Ivan has. And if I may ask, how far is he from finding the traitor himself?”
Carter kept quiet at that and I knew he was thinking the same thing I was. Something about Ivan’s behaviour lately was putting me off on telling him how far everything had gotten. I knew he was still my Gamma and I had to trust him. I don’t know if it was because of that little prank that Carter had pulled on him and he was still upset about his hair or it was something entirely different, I wasn’t sure but I was going to hold off on filling him in on everything. Besides, he was always following Shel around which made me think that maybe he knew about her confessing her feelings to me and he wasn’t happy with it all.
“You win Danvers,” Carter finally said, pulling me from my thoughts. “Ivan has been slacking off but maybe he’s just going through things and I don’t know.”
“I think you can also feel it too Carter,” I said, “something in him has just changed and I don’t know if we can trust me enough.”
Sean placed the papers down and turned to face us. “Look, I know this is none of my business but from what you are saying, it sounds like Ivan could be the traitor or he’s sharing classified information with someone who in turn is the traitor,” he said.
I hated to have to admit it, but I had been thinking about that for so long though I could never bring myself to actually believe that someone I had grown up with and even called a brother would do something like that to me.
“I know you didn’t want to hear it but the person who helped Lila was from inside your pack, not mine and it always seems that the person just knows enough to be able to outsmart you ever time. What does that tell you?” Sean continued. “You may not want to hear this because I know I wouldn’t want to be told that one of my best friends, brother and Gamma was the one who was betraying me from the onset while I kept sharing such kind of sensitive information with him.”
“How are we sure that it’s not you?” Carter countered but even I know he was just grappling at a non-existent thread. “Maybe you hired someone from our pack and all this time you have been playing us for a fool.”
Sean tilted his head to the side in thought. “I wouldn’t be so cruel to my friends at least. I would make sure that they know it’s me. I hate playing mind games with people so I like cutting to the chase from the beginning,” he answered with a casual shrug. “But then again, it’s always nice to see people grappling over non-existent hope. Truly a wonder.”
I raised my hand and cut them both off. “Arguing isn’t going to get us anywhere. We need to do this fast because whatever that prophecy is all about, I’d like to have her by my side when shit goes to hell. Are we on the same page?”
Sean and Carter sighed. “We are,” they answered.
“What do we do now?” Carter asked. “I mean, if Ivan really is the traitor he has to be severely punished for betraying the pack and selling pack secrets.”
I turned to Sean, “what would you have us do if you were in my shoes?” I asked. “Full detailed answer and none of that crap that you always like doing.” I shot him a warning look because he liked using riddles a lot which only ended up confusing me more than I already was.
“For starters, I would exclude him from all the important discussions like you are doing and then I would find hard evidence to prove that he’s the one behind it all,” Sean answered. “But the best way would be to set a trap for him and hope he slips up so you can catch him in the act of betraying you.”
“Go on,” Carter said, taking the words from my mouth.
Sean rolled his eyes and made himself comfortable on the couch. “Let him know everything that happens and your plan to catch the traitor. Make it as detailed as possible and make sure that it’s only the three of you who are aware of the plan. Then after that, sit and watch as he fucks himself over.”
“And what if he finds out what we were planning and outsmarts us?” Carter asked.
“Then don’t fuck up,” Sean simply answered. “At this point in time you can’t risk messing anything up because Jemila’s life is literally hanging in the balance and we need to find her and bring her back as soon as possible.”
I narrowed my eyes at him but he just shrugged. “Watch your mouth Danvers.”
“What? I still like her, it doesn't matter if you and I are friends but one thing I won’t do is get in your way. I’ll learn to live with it. But really Carmichael, catch this arsehole in the act.”
“I have all the intention of doing just that, but not before I find out who helped your sister out with her first attempt.”
The room fell into silence because not only did we have one traitor, but it seemed like we had another one who had worked with Lila. But what I wasn’t sure was if it was the same person or different persons. I had all the intentions of catching these people in the act so that they had no way of escaping my wrath.
“I truly do hope that it isn’t him though,” Carter said, breaking the silence. “Because if he’s the one, I’ll be doing more than just shaving his head and making him walk naked.”
“What are you talking about?” Sean asked as he burst into laughter. “You didn’t do that to him, did you?”
“I did,” Carter replied with a smug smile.
“Do you think that could have been the reason?”
“I highly doubt that happened after she got kidnapped the second time.”
“I see.”
“Maybe it was already in the making and you just never knew about it,” Sean said. “Because if it really is him then he has been playing you both for fools this whole time while he pretended to be on your side.”
“I think I’ve heard enough. I need some air,” I said and walked out of the living room and house all together.
