Part C: Chapter 54
Five days, that was how long it had been since she had been taken and time was not on our side. I was trying so hard not to crack under the pressure much less the restraint I had to have whenever I was around Shelly. Everything seemed to be going to hell and there was nothing that I could do to stop it.
I was in my office, going over some of the paperwork for the latest project that we were supposed to undertake but my head just wasn’t in it. I was looking but not seeing anything until my phone buzzed on the desk, pulling my attention away from my thoughts. With a sigh, I picked the phone up and stared at the caller ID. I hope he had some form of good news or I swear to the Goddess I was going to kill him.
“Tell me you have good news otherwise don’t waste my time,” I growled into the phone.
Sean laughed. “Relax Carmichael, I come bearing good news this time,” he said, that smile still evident in his voice. “Meet me at our usual spot for lunch and I will fill you in on everything.”
I felt a pang through my heart, I was finally going to get some news that could lead me to finding her. “I hope you aren’t playing with me Danvers. I don’t have time for your games.” I knew I was stepping my boundaries but I didn’t want to get my hopes up for nothing only to have them crashed later.
Sean laughed once again. “I wouldn’t have called you if I didn’t have something,” he responded coolly. “And make sure you come with your little guard dog because what I have to tell you is much more than you can handle and I don’t need you causing a scene.” He hung up before I could get another word in.
I looked at the time and I was still quarter past 10am. Crap, I had to wait for that long. Sighing audibly, I dialled Carter’s phone and he answered on the fourth ring as usual.
“Hello,” he said and I could hear voices in the back from his side. “What can I do for you Alpha?”
I mentally facepalmed myself, obviously he was with some pack members and he didn’t want to sound disrespectful. “Danvers has some information he wants to share, meet me at the spot at lunchtime. Don’t be late.” And I hung up.
I kept looking at the large clock hanging on the far right side of my office but all it did was piss me off because it was as if the damn time didn’t want to move. I decided to preoccupy myself by finishing reviewing the contracts that needed my attention but I still finished them in less than an hour. Sighing, I grabbed the office phone and called Ivana.
“Yes sir,” she answered.
“Clear my schedule for the rest of the day and remind me to go for lunch when it’s time,” I replied.
“All right, and is there anything else you would like in the meantime?”
I thought about it then shrugged to myself. “Bring me a coke and some ice and then you can also take the rest of the day off once I leave.”
There was a pause on Ivana's side which made me think she had hung up but then I heard her voice shortly after. “Are you sure about that sir?” she finally asked.
“Of course, you deserve the break after all the hard-work you do.”
“I shall have your coke and ice in a minute.”
“Thank you.”
A few minutes later, my office door opened and Ivana entered with a tray. She was dressed in a white dress that reached past her thighs paired with white high heels while her hair was tied into a chignon. She walked with such ease that I understood why Carter had a crush on her.
“Thank you for all your service Ivana, you truly are an exceptional secretary and I don’t know what I would do without you,” I said once she had placed the coke and ice on the table next to the couch.
Ivana smiled as she looked down. “You flatter me sir, but I am just doing my job as you instructed me,” she said. “Would you be needing anything else?”
I walked over and sat on the couch, pouring the ice in a glass followed by the coke. “No, that will be all. You may leave.”
Ivana nodded and then she left. I watched her leave and then close the door behind her before I leaned back onto the couch, letting it’s softness comfort and embrace me as I took a sip from my glass.
*Please be all right Jemila. Please hang in there for me until I can find you. I know you are fighting but please don’t give up just yet.*
I whispered those words to myself in an empty office. I had to hold onto the little amount of hope that I had that she was okay because thinking anything else only caused me unimaginable pain. Pain was so deep that sometimes I found myself not being able to do anything much less breath properly.
Goddess, what did I do to deserve all of this pain? Wasn’t I meant to be happy once I found the one who would be my light in this dark world.
Sighing, I looked at the clock and realised that time had finally moved and it was time for me to leave. I placed the glass on the table and stood up, smoothing down my suit in the process before I left the office.
It was ten minutes to twelve by the time I arrived at the spot and Sean’s car was already parked in the driveway along with Carter’s car. Damn, they had beat me to it.
I got out of the car and made my way inside where I looked around until I spotted them at the same booth we used. Taking a deep breath, I composed myself as I made my way over to them.
“Look who finally showed up,” Carter said with a smirk when his eyes laid on me. “It’s so nice that you can finally be here with us.”
I narrowed my eyes at him while Sean smiled and picked up his glass of water and took a tiny sip that I wasn’t even sure it could be called a sip.
“Shut up, I had work,” I replied as I slid into the same side as Carter.
“And he had work too, just look at how elegant and handsome he looks in his suit.” Carter pointed to Sean who was trying really hard not to laugh at the whole thing. “Doesn’t he just look like a total ladies’ man because all the women have been staring.”
I mentally rolled my eyes, “I don’t have time for this nonsense. Just tell me what I need to go so we can all go our separate ways.” This whole interaction was starting to piss me off already.
“How about we order something to eat because I’m famished and then I can get to tell you everything,” Sean clasped his hands together and called over the waiter.
Once we had ordered and our food had been delivered, Carter was the first to dig into his spaghetti. Sean on the other hand grabbed his burger and devoured it while I just sat and watched them. I didn’t really feel like eating these past few days and I doubted today would be any different.
“Why aren’t you eating?” Sean asked, arching an eyebrow at me in question.
“I don’t feel like eating.”
Carter waved him off, “he’s always had bad eating habits especially when something happens,” he said through a mouthful.
I narrowed my eyes at him but didn’t say anything as I waited for Sean to finally tell us the reason he had called for us. I adjusted my necktie and leaned back in the booth, sipping on my water.
“All right, so from what my people could find, I think we know who her parents were and where they were from,” Sean began as he placed the remaining half of his burger on the plate. “Karl and Leonie Bartel, those were their names. They were from the Germany pack The Evenfang Prowlers which I’m sure you have heard of. They were the most powerful pack throughout Germany but when Karl and Leonie died, everything changed and not for the best.”
