Kade crept through the hallway, his curiosity drew him towards the Alpha's study, the desire to know what was happening inside too strong to resist because he knew the Alpha didn't seem to have calmed down.

As he reached the door, he paused, his hand hovering over the door handle.

He could hear voices on the other side, low and hushed, though he couldn't make out the words. He pressed his ear closer to the door, listening intently. He just hopes they are trying to settle things and not ruining it instead.

Just as he was starting to hear one of them speak, he heard footsteps approaching from the other direction.

Panic shot through Kade's body like electricity, sending him scurrying away from the door and down the hall.

He kept his head low and ducked into a corner and pressing himself against the wall, hoping to avoid detection from whoever it was.

His heart thundered in his chest as the footsteps drew nearer, especially the sound of the feet clicking against the floor, convincing him it was probably some maid.

He held his breath as the unknown person passed by, oblivious to Kade's presence.

He just hope the conversation between the Alpha and princess Alexia goes well.

Inside the Alpha's chamber, as he inhaled the smoke from his cigarette he let his gaze wander to Alexia, his eyes narrowing slightly as they roamed over her face.

He could see the way her fingers fidgeted with the hem of her skirt, and for a moment, the Alpha considered extinguishing the cigarette and offering her his full attention, but he hesitated.

"Why did you leave the other day without saying anything? Without even a word of explanation?"

Alexia flinched at the question, her shoulders hunching slightly as if to ward off the accusation in his voice.

"It was... urgent," Alexia stammered, her eyes downcast as she fumbled for an explanation.

"I didn't mean to disrespect you or your time. It's just... I didn't think..."

The Alpha remained neutral, his expression unreadable as he studied her.

"And what could be so urgent that it justified leaving without so much as a word of farewell?"

Alexia swallowed, her fingers now twisting into the fabric of her dress as she struggled to find the right thing to say. "I..." she didn't even know what excuse to give.

"Do you have any idea how worried I was when you disappeared? How many people I sent to search for you?"

Alexia's throat tightened, her mouth suddenly dry as she searched for a response.

"I... I'm sorry, my Alpha. I never meant to cause you any distress. It's just..." She trailed off.

The Alpha leaned forward, his voice taking on a dangerous edge this time. "Just what, Alexia?"

"You owe me an explanation, Alexia. And I will not tolerate your evasions any longer."
Alexia flinched, her eyes darting up to meet his, her face pale from his sudden utterance.

Yet, she answered still. "Please, my Alpha. I... I was afraid. I didn't know what you would say, what you would do."

The Alpha leaned back in his chair, his fingers tapping on the armrests. "Afraid of what, exactly?" He seemed confused.

"I thought... I thought that you might stop me from going to see my parents." She sighed, here no difference from a court of law where she's pleading her case.

The Alpha's eyes narrowed questioningly. "And what makes you think that? Have I not given you everything you could possibly want here in the palace?

Alexia's lower lip trembled as she struggled to find the words. "It's not that... I'm grateful for everything you've done for me. But..."

"I knew you wouldn't understand," Alexia whispered, her voice almost too soft to be heard as age continued.

"I knew that if I told you, you would make me wait until morning, and I couldn't risk that. My parents... they needed me."

"And so you decided to deceive me instead?" His jaw clenched, his anger suppressed.

Alexia's shoulders slumped, her gaze falling to the floor in defeat. "I'm sorry, my Alpha. I know that I was wrong to deceive you, but I..."

"You think that justifies endangering yourself?" he cuts her off when she least expected.

"I swear to you, Steele." At this point was where she forget the position he holds and called him by his name. "I would never do that again. Please, forgive me. You should have told me what I did wrong that day. As my mate, I need to know when I've disappointed you." Her pleading is desperate because she can't live another day with them still fighting m.

His expression is unyielding, his eyes cold as though he's intentionally still dwelling on the topic.

"You think that's all this is about? Your disappointment?"

"No, Alpha. I know that I hurt you, that I betrayed your trust." She shook her head tears welling in her eyes.

"I wanted to apologize the very next day, but when I saw you with... with Ava in your office, I knew that I couldn't. I couldn't face the thought of seeing you with her, not after everything we've been through."

His lips twisted into a smirk, his voice dripping with disbelief and some teasing. "And so you stormed off like a petulant child. Do you think that's how a mate should behave?"

Alexia flinched at his words, knowing there was another thing wrong somewhere, Alpha Steele's anger was getting beyond the normal.

"Why did you let her into your office at all? She doesn't like me, and you should know it. Why would you let her anywhere near you?" As she cried out, the composure she's been keeping broke.

The Alpha leaned forward, his eyes narrowed into slits.

"Because she is brought here by my mother and now a part of this pack, just as you are. Or have you forgotten that you are not the only member of this family?"

She could see the internal conflict playing out on his face. As if he's struggling between his anger and his awareness of his own intoxication. Who had given him alcohol in th first place?

"I'm sorry. I... I should not have spoken to you like that. The alcohol has... taken over my mind." Finally, he told her and she can sense he's pained.

Alexia simply felt a wave of relief wash over her, but her anger had not yet fully subsided. He shouldn't speak to her this way, she's only going to let things go because he's under the influence and this is not him.

"So, you're just going to blame everything on the alcohol?" Well, he had.

As Alexia's words hung in the air, the Alpha's head slumped forward, his arms propping him up against the desk as he finally gave in to the pull of sleep, and slept off.

His breathing evened out. She can hear the steady beating his heart in the silence, getting rid of the argument that occured in his room only moments before.

Alexia watched him for a moment, her anger finally dissipating the more she took in the sight of his sleeping form.

With a sigh, she turned and headed for the door, but stopped short as her eyes fell on a folded blanket draped over the back of a nearby chair.

She didn't think about or act by the words he'd said to her in anger, she went to cover him still.
