65. No way.

Eros decided to drive Eve to the packhouse despite her pleading to let her go alone. No matter how much time they spent together or how close they grew, he couldn't let her go alone. It wasn't that Eros didn't trust Eve- he did. His main problem was developing any trust for pack wolves and his mother. The heat had started to lose its impact on everyone, but he couldn't be totally sure. All Eros wanted was to protect Eve and keep her safe until he was convinced that she was under no danger.

"I could have walked there, you know. You have an important meeting with Balthazar and I'm just leaving the apartment for a couple of hours," Eve said, reminding him about her ability to walk for the tenth time, and they hadn’t been on the road for a five minutes yet.

"I heard you the first time," Eros snapped back. He had no intention to hurt or disappoint his mate, yet the constant fear of losing her pushed him to the edge. His mind clouded with the thoughts of how long Eve would stay in the packhouse, will she be safe, and, most importantly- how would his mother act around the human.

"Can you calm down for a second? Have a little faith in your mother; she's changing. I will be completely fine, and later on, when you pick me up, we will go get some groceries and I will cook you the best dinner you ever had." Eve grabbed his hand, squeezing it, a weak smile appearing on her lips.

"I'm trying my best, Eve, but try to understand me. My mother hasn't been quite the mother every kid dreams for. She didn't care about all times I got hurt, or anything out of the ordinary happening to me. After becoming a Luna, that woman never took the fact that I'm her son into consideration. If you haven't noticed, I'm not a part of her pack and she would never accept me. I didn't care for all of those things, I've grown used to her nature, but things change. Now, I've found you and she already tried to harm you. She almost managed to kill you, and not one fiber in my body is screaming to forgive her for her actions and decisions. I'm worried, alright? I'm worried and even more scared that she will do something. I wasn't ready to lose you even before I found you. I wasn't ready to lose you when we met, and I sure as Hell, am not ready to lose you now or in the future. You are my future, Eve; I cannot calm down or take the situation easy. I'm sorry, I just can't." Eros brought her hand to his lips and kissed the top of her hand, his eyes still glued on the road. The hand on the steering wheel was gripping it so tightly, Eve was sure the round, metal object might crumple under the force Eros was using. She took a deep breath and looked out the window, slowly taking in each of his words. It wasn't like Eve was ready or willing to kiss her life goodbye. After meeting Eros, she felt as if her life had just started. Eve’s parents did everything to raise her as an independent woman, yet the main focus had always been to be kind. No matter what the person did or how bad their actions had affected Eve, she had to give them a second chance, especially if the person was trying to change. And now, Luna was doing her best to change her ways and behaviour.
She was so much nicer, always calling Eve to check up on her, making sure that the human didn't lack for anything, and her son was taking good care of her. After all that happened, of course Eve kept looking at Luna’s actions suspiciously. But they had found out that they had a lot in common, and a weird type of friendship had blossomed between them.

"I will be careful, I promise. The phone is in my pocket- easy to reach. If I feel like the slightest thing is off, I'll call you on the spot," Eve finally spoke up. Eros relaxed a bit; it was easily noticeable by the smile on his face.

"Maybe you want to join me? After the meeting, we could visit my mother together. It does sound a little safer, doesn't it?" he offered. Eve just laughed off his offer and reminded him of their plan. She will keep an eye in Luna and any other person who might approach them. Eve promised to stay aware of her surroundings and call Eros even if the cup in her hand looks suspicious. He sounded a little crazy, but Eve knew better. Eros was not willing to take any risk when it came to her safety. A low growl formed in his chest as they drove closer to the packhouse. He didn't bother to cover the snarls of anger when his mother came into view. She was standing in front of the main entrance, smiling, and waving at Eve.

“Acting as if she hasn't done shit,” he thought to himself.

This time Eros decided to keep quiet, avoiding yet another argument with his mate. No matter how much he hated her blind trust in Luna, Eros had to let her act on her own. Eve was his mate, not a prisoner; he couldn't keep her under lock and key just to keep her safe. As much as he wanted to do so. Eros had to get over himself and give her the freedom she deserved. After all, nothing made him happier as that shy smile on her face.

"I guess I'll be going," Eros sighed, turning his face to Eve as soon as the car stopped.

"I guess I will too," she replied, a slight blush appearing on her pale cheeks.

"How about a good luck kiss before I go?" He wiggled his eyebrows, leaning closer to Eve.
Without any hesitation, she pecked his lips, making Eros let out a growl of warning.

"That was not a kiss," he whispered right before crashing his lips on hers. Eve gasped in surprise; Eros used the opportunity to slide his tongue into her mouth, savoring the taste of their deepened kiss. Eve moaned against his lips, grabbing onto his shirt, bringing their bodies closer together. To his displeasure, Eve broke their kiss sooner than he expected, pushing him away from her.

"I didn't know that a sloppy French kiss was considered to bring one good luck," she teased, reaching to open the car door.

"Now, you know. I'll be here at eight sharp if you don't call me before. Please, be careful," Eros couldn't get rid of the bad feeling, hoping that Eve would change her mind. Instead, she nodded her head and got out of the car, heading for the packhouse. Eros watched Eve and Luna hug in front of the packhouse, bright smiles on their faces. Before they entered the building, Luna waved at Eros, the joy on her face fading as soon as she understood that he had decided to ignore her. When both women turned around and headed inside, Eros drove to his house where Balthazar and his mate were living for now.

"Eve, darling, it's so nice to see you again. Follow me, we will spend some quality time in the office, I already instructed the maids to bring us some refreshments and snacks." Luna grabbed Eve's hand, leading her through the long halls of the house. For once, Eve couldn't find the words to explain how grateful she felt for Luna’s actions. If nobody took upon themselves the responsibility to lead Eve to the office, she would get lost in the enormous building.

"Your house is beautiful. Thank you for inviting me over. I must admit, I never thought that it would be so big since I've never been allowed to get near this place. It's like a gated community for the rich and famous." Eve couldn't take her eyes off the ceiling painted in the most breath-taking colors. Eve had thought that the famous packhouse would be black and white. Never, in a hundred years, had she dared to assume that their ceiling would be painted like a galaxy. But here she was, staring up at the universe, without going out at night.

"Thank you, my dear, the ceiling was my idea. I'm a firm believer in diversity; therefore, I demanded that at least one hallway in this place must be different. Since I'm using this one the most, we agreed that I could do whatever I wanted. Honestly, everyone who visited us has nothing but praise about my decision. It makes me feel a little proud of the idea." Luna chuckled, stopping in front of a large door, and opening it with ease. Eve's jaw dropped, imagining the struggle she would have had to go through to open one door. She made a mental note never to choose such high ceilings in their future house, to avoid buying large doors. Both women entered the office; Eve’s first impression was that someone must spend a lot of time there. Probably Luna. The bookshelves were packed with a variety of books, most of them very old looking. The desk looked professional yet a little messy. She sat on the chair and Luna took a seat in front of her.

"Now tell me how you have been? I hope your relationship with my son has gotten better. Again, I'm so sorry for taking you out of territory that night; I never imagined that a human would go into heat. I'm so, so, damn sorry. It was stupid to assume that I was helping you. For a moment there, I thought I'd caused more harm. I hope you'll find the strength to forgive me. Not today, not tomorrow, even if not after years, I'll keep on hoping that one day it might come." Luna looked utterly shattered. Who would have thought that Luna would ever ask for forgiveness? To a human, at that.

"It's in the past, no need to feel bad or keep apologizing. My parents always said that everyone makes mistakes; the important part is understanding and admitting their wrongdoings. I'm just glad it's over. I've been quite well so far, our relationship seems stable for now, but we're still working on that. Nobody's perfect, we do have some disagreements from time to time, but nothing serious. We are just starting to learn how to love. I'm sure we will be fine. How have you been? I hope the pack isn't supplying too much work for you lately," Eve smiled, feeling proud of her answer. For years, Eve had a problem with talking to anyone other than her parents. She's been learning to socialize more, and Eros has helped to build her confidence back up.

"That is wonderful news! I'm so glad about that; you're making my son so happy. He's changing, Eve, all thanks to you. I'm sure he will become a better man in no time. Who wouldn't with a mate like you? As for me, it's been a quite stressful time for me; werewolves tend to be a little aggressive during the heat. Some managed to get into multiple fights; some left the pack in search of unclaimed females. I swear there are a couple of wolves that act more like animals than humans, especially with those hazed minds. That's for the pack. I've been quite fine myself, haven't spoken to my mate for a while, and seem to be busier each day. Not sure if it is the pack or his love of rotating the females," Luna sighed, a hint of pain on her face.
She quickly hid it and offered Eve a cup of tea. Eve gladly took it and ate a good amount of chocolate chip cookies, which were made by Luna. They decided to change the topic and talk about more pleasant things, such as new-born cubs in the pack. Luna and Eve laughed for a bit, then suddenly, Luna hushed Eve and looked around frantically.
Her eyes landed on Eve.

"Can you hear that?" she asked, biting her lip. Eve shook her head, confused about the mysterious sound Luna mentioned. She watched as Lunas' eyes grew even more extensive, a hit of worry growing in her.

"No way..."
