67. Trust me, I am trying to help.

"I don't understand," Eve muttered, slightly confused. Luna kept eyeing her suspiciously; her facial expression was unreadable. The woman herself seemed confused, but the frown on her face, clearly showed off her dissatisfaction. Eve watched the woman stand up and take a few, shaky steps closer to her; Luna's eyes never leaving her tiny form.

"What are you doing? Is something wrong?" Eve asked, reaching in her bag, ready to grab the mobile phone and call Eros.

Luna started acting weirdly suspicious, and Eve was not ready to take any risks when it came to the pack leader's mate. Despite their friendship, she was still her mate's mother and also the same woman who tried to get rid of her just a while ago.
Still, the same woman whom nobody trusted.

"Sit still; I'm not going to hurt you. I just want to check something," Luna replied in an attempt to calm Eve down. The next moment she kneeled in front of Eve and closed her eyes, taking in a deep breath, muttering something Eve couldn't understand.

"Check what?" the young woman kept pushing Luna.

"Put that phone down, I'm about to tell you something important and trust me, my son shouldn't hear such news over the phone." Luna placed a hand on Eve's knee and looked up to her eyes, pleading for the human to follow her lead. Eve blindly trusted Luna and nodded her head, letting go of the phone. Her heart rate fastened; fear overtook her being. Whatever Luna was about to tell her seemed to be dangerous. She wouldn't look like someone who had been thrown out of the boat otherwise.

"I-I don't understand. What's wrong?" Eve's voice trembled as she spoke. The weak, nagging voice in her head screamed for Eve to go. Goosebumps covered her skin. As much as her body and consciousness screamed 'danger,' Eve couldn't move a muscle.
Maybe she was paralyzed in fear, perhaps it was her curiosity, but maybe it was her- the woman who kept her locked here with a look alone.

"Calm down; everything is alright while we're here alone. I promise I will help you as much as I can. We will get you out of here before anyone tries to harm you," Luna broke their intense eye contact and looked around the office frantically. She stood up and ran back to the desk, opening some drawers, looking through documents like a maniac.

"I can't calm down until you tell me what is going on. Is there something wrong with me? I'm sick, right? You can feel it; I bet you can. The heightened senses and all that crap you werewolves have. Oh my Gosh, I'm going to die. I don't want to die; it's too early, I'm too young!" Eve stood up along with Luna, she walked back and forth, grabbing onto her hair in despair. Her mind clouded, filled with dreadful scenarios, all leading to her death. How could this happen? How? Her life seemed to become perfect, experience with Eros was beyond her wildest dreams, and now, she might lose it all. The realization hit her harder than a wall of bricks. All this time, she tried to push him away, yet when Eve thinks of death, she can't imagine her without Eros anymore. She wasn't afraid of death; sometimes, Eve felt as if she welcomed it. What scared her the most was how Eros would live without her. Sure, she wasn't the perfect mate, nor would she become one in such a short time. But Eve knew the man wouldn't live without her. Their souls were tied together; they were meant to be by each other's side. Eve didn't fear to death; she feared the torture Eros would have to endure if she died.

"Eros," Eve cried out his name, dropping on her knees, and covering her face with her palms.
"If I die, what will happen to him? He couldn't live without me; I know that. Mary told me so much about mates; I can't leave him, I can't," she sobbed.

"Calm down; you're not dying. The situation is much more serious. Stand up and stop crying, we will get through this together," Luna used her authoritative voice, hoping that Eve would listen.
She didn't; the young woman was so caught up in her fear that she wouldn't hear it, even if a bomb was dropped next to the packhouse. Luna sat down and watched Eve, waiting for her to run out of tears or calm down. Or more perfectly, tire herself and fall asleep. Luna kept looking through files she had found in the drawer and smiled, seeing one person's name. Jaxon, he would be the one to help her out. His criminal record has been quite impressive so far, if Luna offered him freedom in exchange for a favor, the man would do anything she asked. All she has to do is to leave out a couple of details.
After a couple of minutes of constant sobbing, Eve calmed down. Luna's eyes travelled to the woman's form- knees dragged to her chest, her eyes puffy from crying, and her arms wrapped around herself.

"What am I going to do?" Eve whispered; the words barely audible. The problem was that Eve didn't know what had happened yet, why Luna acted strangely, and why she started to freak out before finding out the facts. Eve's emotions were all over the place; on the other hand, Luna seemed rather calm. Eve lifted her head, watching Luna's clouded eyes, raising an eyebrow in question.

"Give me your bag," Luna suddenly blurted in an authoritative voice.

"What? Why?"

"Just do as you’re told and give me your bag, God damn it!" Luna stood up abruptly and rushed to Eve, grabbing the bag and ripping it out of her hands. She opened it, grabbed the phone, and threw it against the wall, smashing it in pieces. Eve's jaw dropped as she watched Luna's sudden change of behaviour.

"Why would you do that? That's mine! You can't just take other people's property and destroy it like that!" Eve jumped to her feet, yelling at Luna. She didn't care about the old phone she had for years. Eve cared about the fact that she had been taken advantage of. The only way she could contact her mate was with that old phone, and now it was shattered all over the place.

"For your own good, trust me. Now, I already contacted my friend; he will take you to a safe place until I deal with the shitstorm which is about to come. I know it doesn't seem like it, but I'm trying to help you here, nobody would risk their skin as I do now. Be grateful and listen to what I have to say before it's too late and you get your ass into real danger!" Luna hissed, grabbing the sides of her head.

Eve stood frozen on the spot, her mouth opened, but not a single word left it. Out of nowhere, she became mute; her throat felt dry. Both stood in the middle of the office, Luna breathed heavily, as if she was pissed off with something Eve had done.

'Danger, danger, danger' Eve's inner voice kept repeating, but no matter how many times it screamed at Eve, she ignored it.

"Listen. Do you trust me?" Luna stood in front of her, grabbing both Eve's hands in hers, squeezing them gently.

"I- I don't know. I'm trying to, but I'm not sure anymore. You won't tell me what's happening. Out of nowhere the Luna I know is gone, and in comes, a stranger- raging, throwing, and destroying my things. I feel like you did it on purpose, you know that the only way I can get a hold of Eros is that phone. You don't want me to call him; you don't want him here! Am I wrong? Tell me, I'm wrong!" Eve screamed in Luna's face, demanding an answer. Eve had no idea what had happened, but she didn't feel like a weak human girl anymore. Something in her snapped, letting her believe that she is powerful enough to stand her ground and protect herself.

"I did it on purpose, yes. Something has changed about you, and Eros can't find that out. If he does, you'll be as good as dead. By all means, please, run back to him, welcome the death from your mate’s hands, but I will not allow it. I'll jump in front of you for as long as I can, even if it means that I'm the one to die from my son's hands. I will not allow it!" Her words were convincing enough for Eve to believe her. Sadly, though she had found out so much about shifters' ways, nobody had dared to tell her, to warn her about how two-faced and evil some werewolves can be. Being a human in a shifter dominated word, didn't seem as big of a punishment as being mated to one.

"Okay," Eve breathed out the word, still unsure if she was making the right decision.

"I will follow your lead and do as you say, but if anything happens to me and I get out alive... Remember this day, because I will come back stronger than ever. I will make sure that Eros finds out, friendship or not, but this is the last time I trust you. The last time. At the end of the day, if you're doing this to harm me, you'll regret it," Eve pushed the words through gritted teeth, each laced in venom and hatred. Luna smiled, nodding her head, unfazed by the threats coming from a human girl.

"He's near, get ready. I'd trust him with my life; he's a man of honour. My friend will take you to a safe place. After I deal with our mates, I will pick you up from there. Until then, I'll have pack members deliver food and essential items to you without anyone knowing. Each time I will add a note, piece of paper, and a pen- that's how we will communicate," Luna tried to assure Eve that there was no danger in this plan.

Funnily enough, she still hadn’t bothered to explain why or how it would be done. The question why kept bugging Eve, but she decided to brush it off. Sometimes it's better to leave some details unknown, especially if those put you in more danger.

"He's here," Luna whispered, and a large man entered the office just a second after. He kneeled in front of Luna, grabbed her hand, and kissed the top of it.

"You know what to do next," Luna didn't greet the man, who she claimed to be her friend, making Eve feel even more suspicious.

"Yes," he replied with a mischievous grin on his lips, eyeing Eve like prey. Without bothering to speak more, the man approached Eve, extending his hand to her and smiled.

"Larry," he introduced himself.
Eve nodded, shook his hand, and whispered her name.

"It's a pleasure, let's get going," he threw Eve over his shoulder and rushed out of the packhouse. Luna didn't follow them; she stood in the office, watching the man carry the human away, a wave of calmness overtaking her.

"Where are we going?" Eve asked the man as they neared the forest.

"Be quiet, or this won't work. You don't know me, you don't have to trust me, but I'm the only friend you have even though we just met," the man whispered, entering the forest. As soon as they reached a safe distance away from the packhouse, he gently placed Eve back on her feet and looked down at her. The man looked conflicted, trying to figure out something Eve could only guess.

"Mister Larry, are you okay?" Eve asked, unsure of how good of an idea talking to man was in the first place. He chuckled, smiling at the woman.

"My name is not Larry; I'm Jaxon, Miss Eve," he bowed, showing the ultimate respect.

"But you said your name is Larry. Why did you lie?" Eve stepped back, looking around nervously. If the man tried to attack her, she had to find a way out.

"Because I had to. I'm sorry, I never intended to lie to our Queen, but until coronation, I have to bow to ones that still seem superior to me," the man dropped his head in shame.

"Why are we here? Who are you?"

"For starters, my name is Jaxon, as I said. That's my real name. By taking you here, I got out of the cells. I was captured two months ago, taken away from my family and friends. I'm a rogue, Miss Eve. I was trying to hunt down a deer to feed my children, but by accident I crossed the border and was met with the patrol. Luna offered me a deal I couldn't refuse- taking you out of the picture in exchange for my freedom," the man said sadly.

He missed his family and was ready to do anything for them; Eve understood his choice.

"I understand Jaxon, I really do. I'd do the same for my family. Tell me, why is she doing this, though?" Now they were alone, Eve could get her answers, even if that was the last thing she heard.

"You're carrying the King’s child." Jaxon dropped on his knees, tears streaming down his cheeks.

"I love my family, I miss my pups and the whole coven, but I can't, Miss Eve. I can't kill an innocent woman- pregnant, at that. I'll have to beg for your forgiveness as I do this," he sobbed.

"I'm p-pregnant?"

"Extend your arm for me, please," Jaxon begged, grabbing a knife from his back pocket.

"You're about to kill me? I just found out that I'm pregnant and you will kill me. Luna wants me dead," Eve watched him in shock.

The man shook his head 'no' and smiled sadly at her.

"She wants to kill your child, but killing you is like getting rid of a lot of problems. I'll hide you, Miss Eve, to protect the child. But I need blood, so Luna will believe that you're dead. Please give me your hand, I won't take much, and my coven will help heal that," Jaxon begged. For some odd reason, Eve noticed how sincere the man was and nodded. The cut was fast; he wiped her blood off with a piece of white fabric, placing the soaked blood clot in his pocket. The man licked her wound, promising his saliva would help it to heal. Then he disappeared. Eve stood on the spot anxiously biting her lower lip, trying to decide what she should do next.
She could run back to Eros, but even he couldn't protect her at this point. If she ever goes back- her baby will always be under great danger, that is, if she was pregnant.
"I'm sorry. I love you, Eros," Eve whispered, already deciding that she will hide and raise her baby on her own. No matter how much she loved her mate, her unborn child's safety was her main priority.

"Miss Eve?" Jaxon ran back to her panting.

"Yes?"

"I left the cloth next to the woods, called Luna, and she's on her way to check it. We don't have much time; I told her that I'm taking the body to the bleeders, but I would love for you to join my coven. There are not many of us, but you'll have a family. Our elders gladly agreed to take you in and protect you as long as you need it. Would you go with me?" Jaxon grabbed her hand, begging Eve to follow his lead. She didn't overthink; a slight smile appeared on her lips as she nodded.

"I will shift, and you get on my back, hold tightly. If you're tired, tell me, and I'll slow down so you can sleep without falling from my back, okay?" Jaxon didn't wait for her answer, he shifted faster than any other wolf Eve had ever seen and kneeled, making sure Eve could get on his back.
They had already left the pack territory after running for hours and crossed almost a half of unclaimed lands. Jaxon acted way too excited; Eve knew that they were close, she leaned her head closer to his back and closed her eyes, welcoming the new, scary start of her life.
Who knows, maybe starting from a new page won't be as bad as she thinks?
