75. It might bring more pain than relief.

Eros didn't leave the office for days; he occupied himself with thoughts about Eve and then instantly tried to drown them in alcohol. The empty whiskey bottles nearly filled the office until some of the pack members got in to clean the room. A lot of wolves who knew him became more worried with each passing day, knowing how badly hurt their new leader was. He dropped his name, demanding everyone address him by his middle name. He was no longer Eros, he had dropped the thought of taking the throne and had become Alpha Azra. So far, the cruelest and most vicious leader seen. He took over territories with such ease- the other Alphas didn’t see it coming.

"And for how long are you going to keep this shit up? Seriously? Drinking for days, hiding from everyone, and killing as if it is your hobby? I won't start on the fucking name topic. Dude, I understand that you're going through a lot of shit right now but running around like a blood-thirsty madman won't help you," his best friend invited himself into the office, nearly yelling at Eros.
He had had enough and couldn't watch his childhood best friend destroying himself and all of his beliefs.

"Shut it, Zander. I don't need your judgemental ass here, leave me alone!" Eros didn't bother to look at his best friend. He was too ashamed of the state he was in now, hiding shame behind anger.

"Yeah, the fuck I will. Your mate is probably terrified out of her skin, and you're sitting in your fucking office on that damn chair comfortably," Zander growled.

"Don't you dare to mention her! She is not my mate anymore! I will not accept a woman who runs with her tail between her legs when the first shit comes up! I thought she was becoming more reliable; she made me believe that we would fight for our happiness. When a true ray of happiness appeared in OUR fucking life, she didn't bother to tell me anything, did she? No, she fucking ran to kill my damn child behind my back. I understand that you don't have a mate but try getting one and let that bitch go to kill your child- then we will talk about your bullshit. Close the door as you leave," Eros sounded cold, emotionless. Despite the inner storm of emotions and hurt, he was getting way too good in hiding whatever he felt.

"That was a low blow, way too low at that. My best friend is somewhere in that fucking shell; I'm sure he is. Call me when the man I was willing to give up my life for comes back. I miss that fucker, not whatever Alpha Azra is. Until then, I'm leaving your fucking pack, don't mind me- keep drowning your weakness in fucking whiskey. Get fucked!" Zander wasn't expecting an answer, so he left the office as soon as the last words left his lips. The man stormed out of the packhouse and closed the door behind him with full force.

"Great job fuckface, now we lost our only friend," Ares growled from the back of his mind. Eros couldn't get his mind off of Eve; he couldn't figure out the reasoning for her actions. Whatever it was- he knew only facts. Avoiding the information his mother had provided, Eros only knew as much as he had seen, and putting the whole picture together didn't look good for Eve.

"He will get back to his senses sooner or later. I don't need more distractions anyway, friend or not- Zander has to know his place. He needs to take some time off of this bullshit, and so do I. We need to keep watching mother; she will drop the act soon, and then we will decide what our next step will be," Eros didn't sound as intoxicated as he did a minute ago.

"You sneaky fucker, this is all just a part of your plan, isn't it?" Ares grinned. Even though the beast lived in Eros's head- he, by any means, didn't have access to all of Eros's thoughts. When it came to hiding something- Eros was a genius.

"Maybe," his answer was simple, yet a hint of excitement lingered around the one-word answer.

"Tell me more; you can't hide stuff like that from me. We're in this together- Eve is my mate as much as she is yours," the beast hoped that Eros had a fantastic plan, ideally finding Eve as soon as possible.

"I need to keep up the act," Eros acted like he didn't like his own idea, yet Ares felt more intrigued in the idea.

"What for the killing and taking over other territories? Why would we need them if all it takes is for us to accept the throne? I never considered that you might be this stupid, but for your information- the King rules over everyone, all lands, and he doesn't have to kill to own them. Aren't you getting a little out of hand?" Ares was first to judge Eros or his decisions. They had never been on the best terms, aside from anything that included Eve. Their mate had brought both of them closer. And with her disappearance, the human and the beast side in him started to drift apart again.

"I'm not trying to kill the innocent ones. How haven't you noticed the pattern?"

"I'm grieving, okay? I don't give a shit about your patterns; I'm depressed," Ares whined, disappointed in Eros. How couldn't his human notice the sadness in him?

"Listen then. I'm going for the nearest territories with tyrant Alphas. I have no intention of running around and killing whoever gets in my way. The ones who keep abusing their power and pack members fall from my hand. Taking over the territories means that I have more control there; therefore, if Eve is in one of those packs, it'll be easier to locate her. Everything I do has a reason behind it. Step by step, I'm closing the gap while people think that I'm getting wasted here. The idea behind the alcohol is simple- nobody wants to approach a drunk, angered Alpha. It's my way to keep them from avoiding me. The fewer people who see me, the more feared I become," Eros was beyond excited. Of course, Ares knew how good it feels to be feared- whenever he caught the opportunity to take control of the body, the biggest reward was to see the fear in someone's eyes.

"Why?" Ares couldn't help but ask, knowing that his human side had always been entirely peaceful- this was a completely new side of him.

"Simple, nobody's truly afraid of the dark- they're scared of the surprises hiding there. If nobody sees me around, they will fear me more, because there is nothing more horrifying than something, or someone you can't see." Ares was starting to understand, catching on to the thread and taking in how brilliant of a plan Eros had.

"Now, I see it. But what are we going to do with Eve? What if our mother didn't lie and mate is pregnant? Or was..." Ares howled in pain. As primal and aggressive as he was, the beast couldn't bear the thought of losing its pup.

"I don't know. I'm hoping that mother lied about Eve's pregnancy. If I manage to convince myself that she isn't carrying a pup, I don't think about possibilities." Their life had become a nightmare. Any wolf would grieve over their lost mate But losing a mate who is expecting, leads them all to lose their minds. If Eros weren't as strong as he was- he would be one of those who leaves their pack for a bloody rampage. A knock on the door startled Eros, interrupting the conversation he was having with his inner self.

"Eros, darling, may I enter?" Mary whispered, leaning against the door. Eros sighed deeply. Mary and Balthazar were the only two who still could call him by his real name. He sent her to Eve's parent's house earlier, hoping that she had called them and maybe said something about her whereabouts.

"Come in!" He put on his now usual, cold facade. The man was looking out of the window, his back to Mary. These days he rarely gave any attention to people or faced them. The secret behind being ruthless and cold was to avoid eye contact or any contact at all.

"I visited her parent's. The humans haven't heard anything from Eve for weeks. There was no tension or nervous behaviour; I'm sure they didn't lie. They couldn't. I see one thing as a problem, though," Mary stood with her head held high. Eros might be the next King in line, he can become the most ruthless Alpha, but she will not lose her self-respect. A woman mated to Lord has to know her place, and it is not on her knees, in front of other men.

"What's the problem?"

"Aside from not having contact with their child, the humans don't seem interested in where she is. The mother told me that both had given up on Eve as soon as she left them for a werewolf. They can't get over the fact that she mated a shifter. Last phone calls with Eve have been, as they say, dry. Both didn't quite want to speak to her, so Eve kept shrugging the remarks off and excusing herself. Oddly, each time she blurted out that Luna was expecting her call." Mary sounded worried, she started pacing back and forth, unable to find peace to stay put.

"Ah, it looks like we just found out why Eve kept insisting on those phone calls and meetings with my mother. Her parents silently disowned her, and she sought for the feeling of the family beside my mother. It does make sense- my mother can fake many things, one of those is being a mother for everyone. Eve wasn't looking for a friend- she was looking for a fucking family. God damn it, no wonder she kept trying to improve the relationship between my mother and me. How the fuck didn't I notice this shit earlier?" Eros jumped from his seat and threw his fist at the wall in anger.

"I need to leave," Mary whispered.

"No, you don't. I won't hurt you; I'm just angry at myself for being so blind. I'm such an egoist- whenever we spoke, I kept talking about my problems, my day, and my dreams. When I asked Eve about such things- she shrugged it off as unimportant and encouraged me to keep talking. It was all about me and nothing about her. No wonder she left." Eros growled, punching the wall again.

"I'm not leaving because of you, Eros. My friend, Michelle, asked for my help, and I can't refuse her request. That woman had been through a lot, and something has happened- family related. Balthazar will stay around you; he will make sure that your plans are going smoothly. Please, don't be mad at me for doing this, understand that I'm not choosing her over you, I would never. But the same as you are my family- so is she."

"Don't worry about that, go and take as much time as you need to help your friend. The last thing I need to know is how can I get a hold of those Watcher creatures. How do I find one?" Eros finally turned his body to face Mary. The woman smiled at him, happy to see that he wasn't changing much. No matter what people thought- Eros still had the same kind eyes and the same loving smile on his lips.

"Oh, child, you can't find a Watcher- they find you. There is no secret way to gain their attention; the best advice is to be armed with patience and wait. If you don't meet one before I come back, I'll get some information from my friends, probably a couple of witches might help you with this."
Mary rushed to Eros and pulled him into a tight hug as a way to say goodbye. She wasn't leaving forever, but how she hugged Eros made him feel that she won't come back anytime soon.

"Be careful, don't let your enemies creep up on you; don't turn your back to people who claim to be your friends. You have gained quite a lot of enemies, and there are more to come after taking the throne. But most importantly, please don't rush meeting a Watcher. It might bring more pain than relief." Mary pecked his cheek and rushed out of the office, leaving Eros alone.
